Abstract
269,053. Hoe & Co., Ltd., R., (Hoe & Co., Inc., R.). Sept. 15, 1926. Delivery apparatus.-In machines wherein printed products are delivered in batches by an intermittently actuated travelling carrier a cam controlling the actuating mechanism is provided with cam surfaces which can be moved into or out of operative position to vary the frequency of the actuation in order to vary the number of sheets in the batches. Sheets from the printing-press are stripped from a folding-cylinder 3, Fig. 1, by fingers 5, and drop on to a conveyer comprising a pair of endless chains 7, 8, Fig. 3, supporting transverse rods 13 carrying belts 14 on to which the sheets fall. The belts 14 are provided with spaced vertical fingers 9 forming pockets 10. The chains 7, 8 pass around sprockets 11 which are driven intermittently to advance the carrier the length of one pocket after a predetermined number of sheets has been received. The shaft 12 carrying the sprockets 11 is driven by pinions 15, 16 controlled by a ratchet wheel 20 secured on the hub 18 of the pinion 16. The ratchet wheel 20 is engaged by a spring-pressed pawl 28 pivoted on a lever 19 which is loosely pivoted on the hub 8, a rocking movement being imparted to the lever 19 by a connecting-rod 22 pivoted eccentrically on a rotating pinion. The pinion is driven at the same speed as the cylinder 3. The action of the pawl and ratchet of the carrier mechanism is controlled by cam mechanism mounted on a shaft 33 journaled in brackets 31, 32 on the frame 1 and driven by worm and pinion connection with the shaft 25. A cam disc 36 mounted on the shaft 33 is provided with radial slots 37, Fig. 5, forming seating for adjustable blocks 38 with cam faces 39 adapted to co-operate with a roller 42, Fig. 1, on a link 43 which is pivoted to a segmental plate 46 loosely journaled on a stud 17. The lower end of the link 43 is forked to straddle the shaft 33 and is held in position by a collar 45 on the shaft. A torsion spring 48, Fig. 3, on the stud 17 holds the roller 42 in contact with the cam disc 36, and normally holds the segmental member 46 in an elevated position to disengage the pawl 28 from the ratchet wheel 20. The engagement of a cam face 39 with the roller 42 swings the plate 46 from the pawl, allowing the ratchet gear to transmit the rocking movement of the link 19 through the gears 16, 15 to the shaft 12. In the example the cam disc 36 is provided with four slots 37 for cam blocks 38, thereby providing four variations in the number of sheets forming the batches.
