Abstract
267,996. Lambert, A. Nov. 18, 1925. Potassium and sodium nitrates and chlorides. -Potassium nitrate is obtained by dissolving separately caliche and a potassium chloride mineral such as sylvite, carnallite, or Kainite, mixing the solutions, concentrating to remove sodium chloride, and crystallizing out the potassium nitrate. If desired, each solution may be partially purified by concentration so as to remove some sodium chloride before mixing the solutions. Alternatively certain natural lake waters may be employed as the source of potassium chloride. In an example, sylvite is digested with one or two parts of water so as to leave a part of the sodium chloride undissolved. The solution is concentrated to remove sodium chloride, and is then mixed with a solution of caliche which has also been concentrated for the same purpose. The mixed solution is further concentrated and more sodium chloride is removed. The solution is placed on ice and potassium nitrate crystals are separated. The mother-liquor is mixed with the wash-water and concentrated and cooled to recover more potassium nitrate.
