Bodies. - Sheet metal cowl sections comprise two main units, a cowl unit and a pillar unit, the pillars of the pillar unit being each formed of a pair of inner and outer channelshaped members which extend the whole length of the pillar to form a hollow structure and the units being adapted to be secured to one another before attachment to the body sills. The cowl unit consists of a cowl panel 78, Fig. 2, having secured thereto a dash 79, and the pillar unit comprises a pillar at each side connected by two cross-members 50, 51. The pillar comprises an inner and an outer channel member 53, 52 respectively, nested as shown in Fig. 18 and provided with upper and lower brackets 69, 64, Fig. 20, for attachment to the upper cross-member 50, Fig. 34, and top rail and to the sill 65, Fig. 31. The outer member 52 of the pillar is provided with a rabbet 54, Fig. 18, for the door and a bead 58, Fig. 20, in continuation of the bead on the body, while an extension 59 of the face 57 may be bent over to form the inner face, a tacking strip 74, Fig. 20, being provided. The lower cross-member 51 is secured to the pillar by means of an arm 62, Fig. 29, welded to the pillar by a disc end 61, the cross-member 51 being channel shaped to embrace the arm 62 and fashioned to form a continuation of the beading 58. The upper and vertical sides of the panel 78 are flanged to abut against the cross-member 51, and the pillars secured thereto, while the lower edge flange 84, Fig. 2, takes under the sill 65, Fig. 31, toe-board risers or supports 85 being also provided. The dash 79 is flanged and welded to the cowl panel 78.
