Filaments; filaments, supports for.-Helical filaments are mounted upon lamp mounts before they are severed from the stock length of filament. This necessitates dissolving the core out of the filament before the mounting operation, and, to prevent distortion of the filament during the operation of removing the core, it is first annealed at from 800‹-1000‹ C. while wound on a support of chrome steel or ferro-silicon, or less suitably upon porcelain, glazed metal, or quartz. Alternatively, the filament may be annealed on a heatresisting support, and then rewound on an acidresisting support made, for example, of aluminium when a copper core is to be removed. The support on which the filament is wound while being fed to the lamp mount may be so dimensioned or arranged as to act as a measure of length.
