Automatic and semi-automatic exchange systems.-In a system employing two-wire trunk lines a toll operator at the position S is enabled to check the identity of a calling line requiring toll service by means of a check trunk CC over which she gives the number to a switching operator who plugs into the corresponding line jack at the position M. The toll operator also causes an auxiliary trunk JSC to be associated with the trunk WJC over which the calling line reached her by sending impulses thereover from her dial D to control a single co-ordinate switch JS. A circuit is thereby completed from the checking tone transformer CTT over the test circuits of the automatic switches through condensers C1, C2, C3, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and a tone is heard by both operators. In Fig. 1, the sleeve circuit of the first line of a P.B.X. group is connected through condensers such as CS1, CS2 to the sleeve circuits of the remainder, so that the check tone may be always picked up on the sleeve of the first jack. In Fig. 2, in the case of a P.B.X. line, it is necessary for the switching operator to test the corresponding jacks successively until the check tone is picked up.
