Abstract

264,162. National Pneumatic Co., (Assignees of Forman, P. R.). Jan. 6, 1926, [Convention date]. Operating and controlling doors and barriers pneumatically, electrically, and by treadles and the like. - A vehicle door is opened by a pneumatic motor when the vehicle brakes aie applied and electrically-operated means controlling the door motor are simultaneously operated by the car-operator and by a passenger. The arrangement also provides means whereby the doors may be operated independently of the treadle device by the driver or an attendant from stations accessible from the inside or the outside of the vehicle. In the system shown in Fig. 4, the valve 111 of the pneumatically-operated doormotor 3 is controlled by a magnet valve 110, a push-button control switch 114 is provided for the motorman, a treadle 22 that is depressed by the passengers operates the contacts in a door control switch 97, and 124 is a switch device that is arranged to be operated from the outside of the car. Fig. 1 shows the arrangement from the outside of the door, and Fig. 6 shows the treadle switch mechanism in detail. Current from the main is supplied to the control system at 121 leading to the motorman's control, and at 127 leading to the collector's switch 124. When the. motorman applies the brakes the air line pressure is applied to the cylinder 145 to move its piston against a spring and close contacts 118, 120. The motorman then depresses push-button 135 and closes contacts 115, 116. Current from the mains 121 then flows through the wires 119, 113 to the treadle-operated switch contact 102. The depression of the treadle by a passenger causes the plunger 98 to close contacts 101, 102 through a contact disc 100. Current then passes through the wire 109 to the valve 110, and the valve 111 is moved to admit air to the engine 3 to open the doors 2. The step 9 is lowered through an arrangement of lever mechanism connected with the door motor. The rod 98 remains depressed and contacts 101, 102 remain closed through the action of a plunger 105 and lever 106 until the passenger has cleared the step, when a spring 13 turns the step into its upward position. The spring 131 then moves the rod 98 and treadle 22 and opens the contacts 101, 102, and the magnet valve 110 admits air to the other side of the engine piston to close the doors. By the motorman exhausting the air in the brake air line the piston of the cylinder 145 is permitted to return under the action of its spring to open the contacts 118, 120, and the apparatus is reset for the next operation. The motorman may open the doors directly by depressing the button 136 after the brakes are applied. Current then passes through the wire 119. contacts 117, 142, 123, and wires 122, 109 to the magnet valve 110. The doors may be opened from outside the vehicle by means of a key 156 carrying a contact plate 164 that closes the contacts 165, 166 and connects the valve 110 with the main 127.
