Abstract

264,129. Martyn, T. G. Jan. 7, 1926, [Convention date]. Stationary-vessel wet-separating apparatus. - The constituents of pulp containing sand &c. are separated by flowing the pulp substantially horizontally between spaced surfaces so that matter which tends to separate gravitationally from the stream reaches one of the surfaces after a short vertical movement, and is then somewhat protected from the stream, the confining surfaces being inclined so that the matter gravitates along the surface and out of the stream. Fig. III shows an apparatus consisting of a four-walled box 4, 5, 6, converging to a discharge slot 7, and containing two sets of inclined partitions 10, parallel to the converging sides 4 of the box, forming settling-chambers 11 between them. The pulp flows through a grating 24 into a chamber 15, and thence through the chambers 11 to the outlet chamber 17; these chambers have perforated baffles 20, 21, and the feed chamber has a second baffle 26. The heavier sand falls vertically on to the inclined surfaces of the partitions 10, and slides down them to the sorting-apparatus 19, there to be further treated. Buoyant matter rises to the underside of the partitions 10, and is skimmed off from the surface of the liquid. Figs. V and VI show an apparatus, which may form part of a pressure or vacuum system, for dewatering slime and clarifying liquids. It consists of a cylindrical vessel 31, with end covers 32, divided by parallel rectangular partitions 10 forming settling chambers 11. Pulp enters by a pipe 37, and, passing a distributing baffle 38, flows substantially horizontally through the chambers 11 to the outlet chamber 34 and the discharge, the heavier constituents sliding down the partitions to the sludge-collecting chamber 35 and the outlet 40. Air bubbles and other buoyant matters rise into the collecting-chamber 36, and pass away through the float valve 41.
