Abstract

263,201. Caspari, W. A. Nov. 11, 1925. Aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and anhydrides.-Hydrocarbons or their derivatives are oxidized by heat treatment in the vapour phase with air, using certain catalysts in the form of a smoke or aerosol. The catalysts comprise the oxides of metals of the fifth and higher groups, e.g. the oxides of vanadium, molybdenum, tungsten, chromium and uranium. A colloidal suspension of the catalyst in the liquid or molten starting material is first prepared by the use of a colloid mill or by forming an are in the liquid between electrodes of the catalytic material, and the suspension is then sprayed with air into a heated oxidizing chamber in which more of the catalyst may be present in a fixed condition. The production of the aerosol may, if desired, take place in a preheating chamber at a temperature below the reaction temperature. The products are condensed from the issuing gases and the catalyst recovered. Examples are given of the production of benzaldehyde and benzoic acid from toluene, of maleic anhydride from benzene, and of phthalic anhydride with naphthoquinone from naphthalene, using vanadium oxide as the catalyst in each case.
