Abstract

262,917. Vickers, Ltd., and Pratt, H. B. Nov. 27, 1925. Mines, marine. -Relates to submarine mines of the kind in which the firing device is armed by the buoyancy of the mine by means of a member in the mine connected to the mooring cable and operated by the pull of this cable, a sealing diaphragm being provided for the connection. According to the invention, the pull of the mooring cable is applied to the outside end of a lever provided with a sealing diaphragm at its rocking point and connected at its inner end to the arming device. As shown, the mooring cable A', Fig. 1, is attached to an arm B<4> pivoted at one end to the outer end of the rocking lever B and jointed at the other end by a pin-and-slot connection b<5> to a spring plunger B<5>, which is normally locked by a lever E in conjunction with a soluble plug E<2>, Fig. 5. When the mine separates from the anchor during the mooring operation, a lanyard e<2> attached to the anchor pulls a cover-plate off, allowing water to get access to the soluble plug E<2>. When this has dissolved away, the pull of the mooring cable A<1> is free to depress the arm B' with the plunger B<5> and to rock the lever B about a ball- and-socket joint B<2> fitted with a sealing diaphragm B<3>. The inside end of the lever B is connected by a link b to the operating arm c of a switch C'in the firing circuit, which is closed by the aforesaid rocking movement of the lever B. During this movement, the lever B also bears on the toe d of a trigger D' and deflects this trigger against a spring plunger D<2>, thereby releasing the primer D, which then falls over the detonator C. If the mine breaks away from its mooring, the spring plunger D<2> returns the rocking lever to its original position, opening the switch again, thus disarming the mine. The pivotal connection between the arm B<4> and the rocking lever B is provided to permit the arm B<4> to be moved aside to allow the insertion or removal of the primer and detonator, which are held in place by a swinging catch B<4>x. Specifications 264,290 and 264,973 are referred to.
