Abstract
A rotor (14, figure 4) having a disc-shaped body 62 and an axis of rotation. A plurality of permanent magnets (24, figure 8) are mounted circumferentially about the axis of rotation to a first face of the body. There are one or more structures arranged on a second opposing face of the body, the structures suitable for reducing deflection of the body when the rotor is rotated about the axis. The structures may be radially extending slots, recesses, or grooves 78, or alternatively, counterweights (80, figure 13). The body may comprise a layer of metal laminate (64, figure 9) mounted to a rotor back, the magnets being mounted on or to the laminate via an adhesive join (66, figure 9) between the two. Any interlamination spaces may be filled by a compound, including resin. The rotor may have a support member comprising spokes (120b, figure 17) and an annular part (120a, figure 17) which retain the magnets. The rotor may have a pre-stressed retaining band (124, figure 17) surrounding and preventing radial outward movement of the magnets. The rotor may form part of an axial flux machine having a stator comprising stator bars and a set of windings, there being a gap between the stator and rotor.
