Abstract

A telescopic spanner set comprising multiple spanners 4 held together by means of a sleeve or sheath 1 surrounding the handles of the spanners, allowing the spanners to move independently of each other and the sheath so that a selected spanner may protrude from either end of the sleeve. The spanners may comprise notches or ridges near the heads 2 to stop them against the sleeve, and may be secured in place by a locking mechanism such as a thumb screw 3. The set may comprise spanners of varying types and sizes.

Description

TELESCOPIC SPANNER SET
The present invention pertains to spanner sets.
Spanners are generally used to tighten or loosen nuts and bolts. They are frequently arranged to form sets to suit a range of nut and bolt sizes. The spanner sets are usually presented in a single package such as a case or a box.
There are numerous types of sets and the three main types relevant to the present invention are: Open ended spanner sets. Ring spanner sets Combined spanner sets.
However, it is not uncommon to misplace or lose spanners from the set and consequently, it can become disarranged. Also, it can be a nuisance or an inconvenience when removing and returning the spanners to and from the box or package particularly when then the job requires the use of several different size spanners. Spanner sets can also be rather cumbersome particularly when stored on a bicycle or used by an operator in a remote site.
It would therefore be desirable to have a contained telescopic spanner set whereby the user can quickly switch different spanners without removal from the set.
The main object of the present invention is to provide a telescopic spanner set, whereby the spanners are held together, flat, one on top of the other, but with the ability to slide back-and-forth, freely to a position where either end of each individual spanner projects beyond the corresponding end of the next spanner. The protruding end of the spanner enhancing the leverage whilst the remaining spanners form a handle.
The above objective is achieved as follows: Two or more spanners with similar shaft length but different head size, lying flat, directly, one upon another. The spanners are held together by means of a sleeve surrounding the shafts of the spanners. The spanners and the sleeve are free to slide both ways, independently to each other allowing each spanner to protrude from both ends whilst held together by the sleeve. Ridges near the heads of the spanners allow the sleeve to stop unhindered and the selected spanner can be pulled out from the set until it stops at the end of the sleeve and protrudes. The spanners are then held firmly into place by a thumbscrew (s) or the likes fitted to the sleeve. The length of the spanner set is increased due to the protruding end of the spanner, therefore increasing the overall leverage whilst the remaining spanners also form a handle.
The invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIG. 1 shows a perspective view five spanners contained in the set.
FIGS. 2 & 3 shows a front view with a protruded spanner and the slider positioned end to end.
FIG. 4 shows a front view with the slider positioned centrally.
FIG. 5 shows a plan view with the slider positioned centrally.
FIG. 6 shows a plan view with a protruded spanner.
FIG. 7 shows a plan view of a spanner set prior to assembly.
FIG. 8 show perspective views of an embodiment of the present invention.
FIG. 9 shows a plan view of an example spanner stopping layout for Fig 8 embodiment.
FIG. 10 shows a perspective view of the spanner set with combined ring and open-ended spanners.
FIG 11 shows a perspective view of a spanner head with end ridge.
Referring to Figs. 1 -11, there are shown telescopic spanner sets, whereby two or more spanners with similar shaft length but different head sizes 4, are held together by means of a sleeve or sheath 1. Ridges 2 near the heads of the spanners 4 allow the sleeve 1 to stop unhindered and the selected spanner can be pulled out from the set until it protrudes, and is held firmly into place by a thumbscrew 3 or the likes fitted to the sleeve.
Figs 1 -7 show five double open-ended spanners held together with a sleeve. A thumb screw is used to stop the protruded spanner from moving when in use. The thumb screw is also used to prevent the spanners in the set from moving haphazardly and to keep the spanners in an orderly place when they are not extended. The thumbscrew can be fitted to one or both sides of the sleeve. The ridges on the spanner heads allow the spanner to stop when it hits the sleeve. The sleeve, spanners and thumbscrew can be shaped and aesthetically improved.
The telescopic spanner set can be utilised to accommodate two or more spanners and with a variety of different types of spanner heads such as open ended and ring or a combination of the two This invention has the scope to incorporate a range of metric or imperial sizes.
The length of the spanner set is increased due to the protruding end of the spanner, therefore increasing the overall leverage whilst the remaining spanners also form a handle.
Fig 8 show perspective views of an embodiment of the present invention. Spanners contained in a sheath are free to slide back and forth independently to each other allowing each spanner to protrude when required. The spanners are contained and are prevented from removal through an internal stop system.
Fig 9 shows a plan view of an example of a spanner stopping layout for Fig 8 embodiment. When a spanner is extended from the sheath a ridge situated at the bottom of the spanner body hits a stop built into the sheath wall preventing the removal of the spanner from the sheath. The extended spanner and others are held firmly into place by a thumbscrew. There are of course many other alterative stopping systems. Fig 10 shows a perspective view of the spanner set with combined curved ring and open-ended spanners. While the middle spanners may be straight the heads may be curved particularly the outside spanner heads.
Fig 11 shows a perspective view of a spanner head with end ridge. Spanners can be extended by the operator in several ways. The spanner heads can be shaped so that fingers can grip sufficiently, or ridge or grooves in the heads can be used to help the operator to pull the required spanner.
Further modifications such as ways to ensure the spanners slide more easily will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without departing from the scope of the present invention. Cr)
