Description

A GOLF TRAINING MAT
Technical Field
The present disclosure relates to a golf training mat, particularly a golf training mat comprising a foot placement marking for a first foot, a set of foot placement markings for a second foot and a set of ball placement markings.
Background
In the game of golf, the short game refers to the category of shots that are made when the golfer is located relatively near the green, usually within about 100 yards of the hole.
The short game is one of the most difficult aspects of the golf game as it requires the shots to be made with a great amount of accuracy and precision in a repeatable and consistent manner. Small variations in the stance, ball positioning and swing of the golfer can have significant impact on the distance, direction and accuracy of the shot.
A golf swing is a sporting action that is particularly suited to static repeatable training methods, as the dominant action must be carried out repeatably and consistently in order to perform an accurate shot, and many different shot variations are possible based on the same dominant action. Because a golfer and the golf ball are static, a consistent swing can be practised that does not require the dynamic variation associated with sports where a moving ball has to be hit, requiring constant adjustment to the swing, stroke or strike in order to accommodate ongoing changes the sportsperson or athlete may need to make right up to the point of striking the ball. Nevertheless, there are many different factors which affect a golf shot. For example, the position of the front foot and back foot, the position of the ball and the backswing all have significant impact on the direction, distance and accuracy of the shot.
It would therefore be desirable to provide a golf training aid suitable for use in training exercises to provide an intuitive way for a user to adjust the relative placement of their feet and the ball as well as adjust their backswing such that they can hit the ball a desired target distance.
This would allow a user to better practice their golf swing, especially for the short game, so that they can consistently and accurately hit golf shots a desired distance and direction.

Brief Description of the Drawings
To enable better understanding of the present disclosure, and to show how it may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example only, to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 shows a top view of a golf training mat according to the present disclosure.
FIG. 2A-2D illustrate a golf swing and a method of using the golf mat when performing a golf swing.

Detailed Description
FIG. 1 shows a top view of a golf training mat 100 for practicing the golf short game.
The golf training mat 100 comprises a back foot placement marking 110, a set of front foot placement markings 120 and a set of ball placement markings 130.
The set of front foot placement markings are arranged as a linear scale starting from a first front foot placement marking 121 and followed by a number of subsequent front foot placement markings. For example, the golf training mat 100 of FIG. 1 has a second front foot placement marking 122, a third front foot placement marking 123, a fourth front foot placement marking 124, a fifth front foot placement marking 125 and a sixth front foot placement marking 126. Similarly, the ball placement markings 130 are arranged as a linear scale starting from a first ball placement marking 131 and followed by subsequent ball placement markings. The golf training mat 100 of FIG. 1 has a second ball placement marking 132, a third ball placement marking 123, a fourth ball placement marking 125, a fifth ball placement marking 125 and a sixth ball placement marking 126.
The back foot placement marking 110, the first front foot placement marking 121 and the first ball placement marking 131 are positioned to form the corners of a triangle having three sides Li, L2 and L3. A third side of the triangle L3 between the first front foot placement marking 121 and the back foot placement marking 110 has a length which corresponds roughly to an outer shoulder width of a human and may be in the range of 30cm to 50cm. A first side of the triangle L1 between the first front foot placement marking 121 and the first ball placement marking 131 has a length which is the same as the length of a second side L2 of the triangle between the backfoot marking 110 and the first ball placement marking 131. The length of L1 and L2 may also be the in the range of 30cm to 50cm and may be the same as the length of L3 such that the triangle is an equilateral triangle. The triangle may be an acute triangle such that all of the internal angles are less than 90 degrees.
The set of ball placement markings 130 extends in a line parallel to the first front foot placement marking 121 and the back foot placement marking 130 (i.e. parallel to L3) from the first ball placement marking 131 in a backwards direction (i.e. in a direction towards the backfoot marking 110). The subsequent ball placement markings may be placed at regular intervals on that line. The line may end in an arrow which indicates the direction in which the ball travels.
Similarly, the set of front foot placement markings 120 extends in a line which is substantially parallel to the first ball placement marking 131 and the back foou placement marking 110 (i.e. substantially parallel to L2) from the first front foot placement marking 121. The subsequent front foot placement markings may be placed at regular intervals along that line. The set of front foot placement markings 120 may extend from the first front foot placement marking 121 all the way to a centre line 140. The centre line 140 extends through the first ball placement marking 131 and bisects the line between the first front foot placement marking 121 and the back foot placement marking 110 (i.e. side L3 of the triangle).
The set of front foot placement markings 120 further comprises target distance markings 150A which are positioned next to each front foot placement marking. For example, the first front foot placement marking 121 comprises a target distance marking of 90 yards, the second front foot placement marking 122 comprises a target distance marking of 75 yards, the third front foot placement marking 123 comprises a target distance marking of 60 yards and so on. Each subsequent front foot placement marking comprises a lower target distance marking. In the embodiment of FIG. 1, the target distance is reduced by 15 yards for every subsequent front foot placement marking, however, the target distance may be reduced by a different amount with each subsequent front foot placement marking, depending on the distance between each front foot placement marking. The last or sixth front foot 126 marking which coincides with the centre line 140 has a target distance marking of 15 yards. Generally anything under 15 yards will be played with a putter club and therefore the minimum target distance may be 15 yards. The maximum target distance in the embodiment of FIG. 1 is 90 yards but may be up to 100 yards. Anything over 100 yards is generally not considered part of the golf short game and does not require the same relative positioning of the front foot, back foot and ball. The golf training mat 100 is intended for the short game so the maximum target distance may be up to 100 yards.
The set of ball placement markings 130 also comprises target distance markings 150B which are corresponding to the target distance markings 150A of the set of front foot placement markings 120. This means that the first ball placement marking 131 has the same target distance marking as the first front foot placement marking 121, e.g. 90 yards. The second ball placement marking 132 has the same target distance marking as the second front foot placement marking, e.g. 75 yards, and so on. The last or sixth ball placement marking 136 has a target distance marking of 15 yards, which is the same as the sixth front foot placement marking 126.
In addition, the set of ball placement markings 130 may comprise backswing markings 160 indicating the length of the backswing which are positioned next to each ball placement marking. In the embodiment of FIG. 1, the backswing markings 160 are in the form of a clock face value from the user's perspective, with 12 o'clock marking the position of centre line 140 and 6 o'clock marking a position behind the user's head. This allows an easy and intuitive way to indicate the length of the backswing to a user of the golf training mat 100. For example, the first ball placement marking 131 has a clock face value of 6 o'clock meaning that the club face should go all the way behind the user's head (i.e. 160 degrees from the centre line 140) to a 6 o'clock position during the back swing. The second ball placement marking 132 has a clock face value of 5 o'clock, meaning that the club face should go to a 5 o'clock position during the backswing (i.e. 150 degrees from the centre line 140). The same principle applies to the third ball placement marking 133 and any subsequent ball placement markings.
The golf training mat 100 may further comprise a second set of ball placement markings 170 which extend in parallel with the first set of ball placement markings 130, but are positioned further away from the back foot placement marking 110 and the first front foot placement marking 121 than the first set of ball placement markings 130. The second set of ball placement markings 132 may be used for a longer club, for example, if a taller user uses the golf training mat 100. The second set of ball placement markings 180 may comprise actual markings or it may be a simple line or dotted line as shown in FIG. 1, where the ball can be placed at the same parallel positions as for the first ball placement markings 130.
Similarly, the golf training mat 100 may further comprise a third set of ball placement markings 180 which also extend in parallel with the first set of ball placement markings 130. The third set of ball placement markings 160 are positioned closer to the back foot placement marking 110 and the first front foot placement marking 131. The third set of ball placement markings 133 may be used for a shorter club, for example, if a shorter user uses the golf training mat 100. The third set of ball placement markings 180 may comprise actual markings or it may be a simple line or dotted line as shown in FIG. 1, where the ball can be placed at the same parallel positions as for the first ball placement markings 130.
The second and third sets of ball placement markings 170, 160 allow the golf training mat 100 to be more easily used by different users of different height, having different lengths of clubs.
The golf training mat 100 may be made from a number of suitable materials, such as polyethylene, polypropylene or nylon. The golf training mat 100 may comprise artificial blades of grass on its top surface in order to replicate the feel of hitting the ball from a grass surface. The golf training mat 100 may be flexible to allow it to be easily carried and stored and prevent damage to the golf club when using the golf training mat 100.
A method of using the golf training mat 100 to perform a golf shot and practice the short game will now be illustrated with FIGS. 2A-D and with reference to FIG. 1. For the sake of simplicity, FIGS. 2A-L) do not show the individual markings of the golf training mat 100. However, these can be taken from FIG. 1.
The first thing a user of the golf mat 100 needs to determine is a target distance. This is usually the distance from the ball to the hole. The golf training mat 100 is Intended to work well and allow a user to practice shots for any target distances under 100 yards.
As shown in FIG. 2A, once the target distance has been determined, the user will position their feet and the ball on the golf training mat 100. Their back foot is positioned on the back foot placement marking 110 and their front foot is positioned on the front foot placement marking which has the desired target distance. For example, if the target distance is 45 yards, the front foot will be positioned on the fourth front foot placement marking 124. The ball is then positioned on the corresponding ball placement marking which has the desired target distance. For example, if the target distance is 45 yards, the ball will be positioned on the fourth ball placement marking 134.
Once the feet and the ball are positioned correctly on the golf training mat 100, the user then determines a length of the backswing from the backswing markings 160, indicating the length of the backswing on the golf training mat 100. For example, if the ball is positioned at the fourth ball position marking 136, indicating a target distance of 45 yards, then the backswing marking is 3 o'clock. As shown in FIG. 2B, the user will therefore perform a backswing such that the club face is at a 3 o'clock position from the centre line 140 (around 90 degrees from the centre line 140).
The user will then perform a down-swing, as shown in FIG. 20, where they hit the ball with the club face followed by a follow-through, as shown in FIG. 2D.
Due to the positioning of the front foot, back foot and ball together with the indicated length of the backswing, the user will find it much easier to hit the ball for the desired target distance.
The golf training mat 100 can therefore help a user practice their short game by coordinating the positioning of their feet and the ball together with the length of the backswing in order to hit the ball a specific target distance.
FIG. 3 shows a top view of an alternative embodiment of a golf training mat 300 for practicing the golf short game.
The golf training mat 300 is similar to golf training mat 100 of FIG. 1, except that it comprises one front foot placement marking 320 and a set of back foot placement markings 310, instead of one back foot placement marking 110 and a set of front foot placement markings 120. The golf training mat 300 also comprises a set of ball placement markings 330.
The set of back foot placement markings 310 are arranged as a linear scale starting from a first back foot placement marking 311 and followed by a number of subsequent back foot placement markings. Similarly, the set of ball placement markings 330 are arranged as a linear scale starting from a first ball placement marking 331 and followed by a number of subsequent ball placement markings.
The front foot placement marking 320, the first back foot placement marking 311 and the first ball placement marking 331 are positioned to form the corners of a triangle having three sides Ll, L2 and 11. The triangle is identical to that of golf mat 100 of FIG. 1.
The set of ball placement markings 130 extends in a line substantially parallel to the front foot placement marking 320 and the first ball placement marking 331 (i.e. substantially parallel to L1) away from the front foot placement marking 320. The subsequent ball placement markings may be placed at regular intervals on that line.
Similarly, the set of back foot placement markings 310 extends in a line which is substantially parallel to the first back foot placement marking 311 and the first ball placement marking 331 (i.e. substantially parallel to L2) from the first back foot placement marking 311 towards the first ball placement marking 331. The subsequent back foot placement markings may be placed at regular intervals along that line. The set of back foot placement markings 310 may extend from the first back foot placement marking 311 all the way to a centre line 340. The centre line 340 extends through the first ball placement marking 331 and bisects the line between the front foot placement marking 320 and the first back foot placement marking 311 (i.e. side L3 of the triangle).
The set of back foot placement markings 310 further comprises target distance markings 350A which are positioned next to each back foot placement marking. The set of ball placement markings 330 also comprises target distance markings 350B which are corresponding to the target distance markings 350A of the set of back foot placement markings 310. This means that the first ball placement marking 331 has a target distance marking with the same distance as the first back foot placement marking 311, e.g. 90 yards. Each subsequent back foot placement marking and each subsequent ball placement marking have corresponding target distance markings 350A, 350B with the same distance, which reduces with each subsequent marking.
In addition, just like the golf mat 100 of FIG. 1, the set of ball placement markings 330 may comprise backswing markings 360 indicating the length of the backswing which are positioned next to each ball placement marking. An arrow 390 indicates the direction of travel of the ball.
The method of using the golf training mat 300 is substantially the same as the method for using golf training mat 100 explained in relation to FIGS 2A-2D above. However, rather than adjust the position of the front foot and the ball depending on the target distance, the user adjusts the position of the back foot and the ball depending on the target distance, while the front foot remains stationary.
FIG. 4 shows a top view of another alternative embodiment of a golf training mat 400 for practicing the golf short game.
The golf training mat 400 is similar to golf training mat 100 of FIG. 1, except that it comprises one ball placement marking 430, a set of front foot placement markings 420 and a set of back foot placement markings 410, instead of one back foot placement marking 110 and a set of front foot placement markings 120 and a set of ball placement markings 130.
The set of back foot placement markings 410 are arranged as a linear scale starting from a first back foot placement marking 411 and followed by a number of subsequent back foot placement markings. Similarly, the set of front foot placement markings 420 are arranged as a linear scale starting from a first front foot placement marking 421 and followed by a number of subsequent ball placement markings.
The ball placement marking 430, the first back foot placement marking 411 and the first front foot placement marking 421 are positioned to form the corners of a triangle having three sides Li, L2 and L3. The triangle is identical to that of golf mat 100 of FIG. 1. A centre line 440 extends through the ball placement marking 430 and bisects the line between the first front foot placement marking 421 and the first back foot placement marking 411 (i.e. side L3 of the triangle).
The set of back foot placement markings 410 extends in a line substantially parallel to the first front foot placement marking 421 and the first back foot placement marking 411 (i.e. substantially parallel to L3) from the first back foot placement marking 411 towards the first front foot placement marking 421. The subsequent ball placement markings may be placed at regular intervals on that line.
Similarly, the set of front foot placement markings 420 extends in a line which is substantially parallel to the ball placement marking 430 and the first front foot placement marking 421 (i.e. substantially parallel to L1) from the first front foot placement marking 421 away from the ball placement marking 430. The subsequent front foot placement markings may be placed at regular intervals along that line.
The set of back foot placement markings 410 comprises target distance markings 450A which are positioned next to each back foot placement marking. The set of front foot placement markings 420 also comprises target distance markings 450B which are corresponding to the target distance markings 450A of the set of back foot placement markings 420. This means that the first back foot placement marking 411 has a target distance marking with the same distance as the first front foot placement marking 421, e.g. 90 yards. Each subsequent back foot placement marking and each subsequent front foot placement marking have corresponding target distance markings 450A, 450B with the same distance, which reduces with each subsequent marking.
In addition, the set of back foot placement markings 410 may comprise backswing markings 460 indicating the length of the backswing which are positioned next to each back foot placement marking. Alternatively, or in addition, the set of front foot placement markings 420 may also comprise corresponding backswing markings (not shown). An arrow 490 indicates the direction of travel of the ball.
The method of using the golf training mat 400 is substantially the same as the method for using golf training mat 100 explained with respect to FIGS 2A-2D above. However, rather than adjust the position of the front foot and the ball depending on the target distance, the user adjusts the position of the front foot and the back foot depending on the target distance, while the position of the ball does not change.
