Abstract

A support for a forage receptacle, such as a hay net or forage bag, comprising a flexible elongate sheet [10, fig 1] formed with at least one holding aperture 12 and has at least one hook portion 16 proximal the holding aperture. The holding aperture may be formed as an arch or inverted u shape to provide the at least one hook portion. In use the sheet may be rolled by overlapping end wall portions 20, 20’ to form a cylinder and placed within a hay net 22 . The sheet unfurls in the net creating an outwards pressure and the net is hooked on portions 16 to keep the net upright for filling. After filling, the sheet is removed.

Description

Title: Support for Forage Receptacle
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a support for a forage receptacle, such as a hay net or forage bag.
Background to the Invention
To assist with filling forage receptacles, such as hay nets or forage bags, with hay or other hay-like forage, flexible cylindrical sheets can be disposed within the receptacle in to form a cylinder that urges against the sides of the net or forage bag and so provides a tubular opening for receiving hay. However the hay net needs to be held during filling to prevent it falling to the floor.
Summary of the Invention
In accordance with the invention there is provided a support for a forage receptacle, such as a hay net or forage bag, comprising a flexible elongate sheet, wherein the sheet is formed with at least one holding aperture and has at least one hook portion proximal the holding aperture. During use, a hay net cord or equivalent tape, band or strap of a forage bag is positionable over the hook portion so as to assist with filling the forage receptacle. The hook portion is thus preferably configured to secure part of a forage receptacle.
The at least one hook portion may be integrally formed with the remainder of the sheet.
Preferably the at least one holding aperture is formed as an arch or inverted u-shape so that the shape of the at least one holding aperture provides the at least one hook portion.
The sheet is preferably formed with at least four holding apertures and desirably each holding aperture provides at least one hook portion.
The invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a plan view of flexible sheet for use in a forage receptacle; and Figure 2 shows such a sheet in use
Description
Figure 1 shows a substantially rectangular flexible sheet 10 formed from plastics materials and formed with a plurality of holding apertures 12 along an upper edge 14 Apertures 12 are regularly spaced parallel to upper edge 14. Edges of sheet 10 are in formed with rounded corners 18.
Each holding aperture 12 is formed as an arch or inverted u-shape so that the shape of aperture 12 provides an upstanding portion 16 which acts as a support or hook portion. Upstanding portion 16 is typically integrally formed with the remainder of sheet 10 During use, sheet 10 is rolled into a cylinder by overlapping end wall portions 20, 20' to create a cylinder having a smaller diameter than that of a hay net 22 into which sheet 10 is to be inserted. Once rolled up, sheet 10 is placed within hay net 22, see Figure 2, and rolled sheet 10 unfurls within the constraints of the dimensions of net 22, urging against the sides of hay net 22 to form a larger diameter cylinder 24 where side walls 20, 20' still overlap. The expansion of sheet 10 outwards creates an outwards pressure to assist hay net 22 to stay upright rather than collapsing.
Once sheet 10 has expanded within net 22, hay net cord 26 is hooked over upstanding portions 16 to prevent hay net 22 from slipping down cylinder 24 during filling and so ensure a user is able to use both hands to fill net 22 without net 22 slipping to the floor.
Once cylinder 24 is tilled to a suitable height, typically just below apertures 12, cord 26 is unhooked from upstanding portions 16 and sheet 10 is removed by using holding apertures 12 to pull sheet 10 upwards and out of the top of hay net mouth 28. Rounded corners 18 prevent hay net 22 from catching on sheet 10.
Typically holding apertures 12 are each formed as the same shape for ease of manufacture. However if desired the shape of apertures 12 can be varied as long as at least one aperture has at least one upstanding portion associated with it to hold net cord 26 or equivalent tape, band or strap of a forage bag. Hook portion 16 can be formed separately to sheet 10 and attached proximal holding aperture 12 using a fixing so as to hold cord 26 in place, for example using a hook and screw arrangement. However a hook portion integrally formed with sheet 10 is preferred as it avoids mechanical elements that might become detached and perhaps cause harm to an animal using hay net 22.
The dimensions of sheet 10 and the number of holding apertures 12 can be varied depending on the size of the net or bag with which the sheet is intended for use. For a sheet with dimensions of approximately 2.2m x 0.7 m, typically five holding apertures will be formed with the number of holding apertures reduced for smaller sizes, for example a sheet with dimensions 1.8m x 0.6m will typically have four holding apertures. The dimensions are typically selected so that wall portions 20, 20' will overlap even when flexible sheet 10 is unfurled to its maximum extent within a hay net or bag, and to ensure sheet 10 extends from the bottom of net 22 to just beyond net mouth 28.
