Description

A KNEE PROTECTION DEVICE
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a knee protection device, in particular a device for repeated kneeling.
Background
Increasing numbers of people look to fix and repair things, and in many cases properties, as increasing awareness of environmental impacts are raised.
Many societies also have an ageing profile, and consequently many people tasked with repairs and physical labour are likely to be older.
Older people may tend to have less able bodies, which need more comfort and protection, and in the case of many repairs for example it can be problematic for older users of tools, for example needing repeated kneeling such as in relation to electrics work, plastering or similar. This can be hard on a user's knees.

The present invention arose in order to overcome problems suffered by existing devices.
Summary of the Invention
According to the present invention there is provided a knee protection device comprising an inflatable chamber, an inflation means, and a resiliently deformable padding, wherein the chamber is comprised by a plurality of segments divided by division means, so as to be enabled to move in relation to each other at perimetric locations, and the padding is located to both faces of the chamber.
In this way the device of the present invention enables a comfortable knee pad, that 25 is shapable in use to provide comfort to a worker on their knees repeatedly and for periods of time.
In some embodiments the chamber comprises a plurality of segments fanning out from a central location, which location is arranged in use over a user's kneecap. This allows the device to provide comfort to all sides, which is enabled to adapt to variations in attitude between the knee and ground, to thereby allow greater freedom of movement when on knees.
In some embodiments the division means comprises triangular spacing between at 35 least some segments. This may be envisaged to allow for greater freedom of relative movement of the perimeter of the segments.
In some embodiments the division means comprises indentations between at least some segments, which indentation may extend to the central location so as to enable relative movement near the central location.
In some embodiments the inflation means comprises a bladder, which may be envisaged to provide a compressible bladder that includes and has an outlet links to the chamber.
In some embodiments the inflation means comprises a pump. This pump may drive air through a channel to the chamber.
In some embodiments the inflation means is located above the chamber in use, so as to allow for easy access in use.
In some embodiments the device comprises a resilient bias expanding the chamber to provide an inflation means. This bias may thereby inflate the chamber when released. Such inflation means may comprise a top-up inflation valve for example through blowing.
It may be envisaged that embodiments of the device comprise a one-way valve, so as to allow for entrance of air to the chamber, but mitigate against exit. The valve may be provided at inlet and/or outlet of air to the chamber.
In some embodiments the chamber of the device comprises a release button so as to release air from within the chamber.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided apparatus comprising a tubular sleeve formed in elastomeric material and having a pocket 30 containing a device according to any of the preceding claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the Figures in which:
Brief Description of Figures
Figure 1 shows an isometric view of an embodiment of the device according to the present invention; Figure 2 shows a reverse isometric view of the embodiment of the device shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 shows an exploded isometric view of the embodiment of the device shown in Figure 1; Figure 4 shows a reverse exploded isometric view of the embodiment of the device shown in Figure 1; Figure 5 shows an isometric view of apparatus according to a second aspect of the 15 present invention, incorporating the embodiment of the device shown in Figure 1; and Figure 6 shows a reverse exploded isometric view of the embodiment of the 20 apparatus shown in Figure 1.
Detailed Description of Figures
With reference to the figures there is shown an embodiment of a knee protection 25 device 99 generally comprising an inflatable chamber 5, an inflation means 1, and a resiliently deformable padding 310, wherein the chamber 5 is comprised by a plurality of segments and the padding is located to both faces of the chamber.
In particular reference to the embodiment shown in Figure 1 the embodiment comprises a chamber with two opposed substantially continuous faces and intermediate walls, which faces and walls are formed in a substantially rigid inelastic material such as plastic or polymer like acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) or similar.
The chamber has a central location 8 from which four segments fan out perpendicularly., each being of two sections substantially triangular in form.
The segment sections are connected by an indentation 2 extending along a segmentation line.
These indentations provide lines of weakness or folding lines, such that the segments may be envisaged to fold or bend at the indentations.
In this way in order to provide more movement perimetrically the chamber's segments are further separated by triangular spaces 6, so as to further aid in rearrangement of the chamber around the location, which may be envisaged to correspond to a knee in use, wherein the perimeter of the segments is provided as fingers which clasp the knee.
The inflation means 1 comprises a depressible bladder formed in rubber.
This bladder extends above the chamber in a substantially parallelogram shape. This is provided with a one way valve 17 with a springloaded button on it to allow the user to release the trapped air in the chamber when the user is finished and for entrance of air to the bladder, and an air channel between the bladder and the chamber so as to allow passage of air when the bladder is depressed. The bladder is formed in a flexible inelastic material such as rubber, so as to allow for easy squeezing to move air from a one-way valve 7 which is located distal the chamber on the top edge of the inflation means bladder.
In this way the bladder may be depressed to inflate the chamber so as to provide more cushioning for the knee of the wearer.
The inner face 10 of the embodiment comprises a resiliently deformable padding material such as a closed cellular polyurethane foam. The removable foam backing 30 stops the user from accidentally pushing the air release button as well as cushioning the user's knee.
The outer face of the chamber comprises triangles 3 of resiliently deformable padding material such as a closed cellular polyurethane foam, which each extend 35 from the central location to the perimeter of the segments, between the spaces 6 and the indentations 2.
The channel 17 has a release valve, so as to allow for easy release of air from the chamber thereby allowing the user to release air easily and in a controlled manner. This is provided by a button According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided apparatus as shown in Figure 5, comprising a knee sleeve. The sleeve comprises a closed tube of elastomeric material, with a hole on a rear face of the knee in use, and a pocket for receipt of the device as shown in Figure 1.
The invention has been described by way of examples only and it will be appreciated that variation may be made to the above-mentioned embodiments without departing from the scope of protection as defined by the claims.
