Gravity, measuring force of. - The casing of a torsion balance of the E÷tv÷s type is suspended from a suitable support, so that the wire supporting the moving masses within the casing automatically assumes a vertical position. In Fig. 1 the casing f carries a cage h to which is attached a single suspensionwire e for supporting the casing from a stand head a. The upper end of the wire e is secured to a spindle d which is rotated by clockwork &c. c, this rotation being transmitted by the wire to the casing f. The suspension e may be of bifilar form, or it may comprise a spring strip or a universal or Cardan suspension.
