Abstract

A system of vehicle battery cassettes that allows one or more batteries to be easily installed and removed from a vehicle for storage and/or charging purposes. Preferably the batteries are lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries or similar, rather than lead-acid or nickel-based batteries. Preferably the total battery is divided into two or more cassettes that can be linked in the vehicle. The vehicle may be capable of being run with one of the cassette spaces empty.

Description

DESCRIPTION
This invention applies to rechargeable batteries, for example those based on lithium ions, sodium ions or other chemistries with comparable energy storage densities. It does not apply to lead-acid or nickel-based batteries.
These battery chemistries make it possible for energy to be stored in cassettes weighing not less than 5 kg and not more than 35 kg, weights capable of being moved or carried by one person or rolled or otherwise carried on a gurney, and which provide sufficient power to be used as traction batteries for electric vehicles.
Many electric vehicles are heavy and require considerable power to operate, typically 50Kw to 150Kw but smaller vehicles weighing less than a tonne can be operated with power of as little as 10Kw to 50 Kw, especially on tarmacked city roads.
The invention comprises that the total battery is divided into two or more cassettes which can be linked in the vehicle. The cassettes can be removed and charge off the vehicle singly or linked. The vehicle can run with one or more of the cassette spaces empty.
Irrespective of the weight and power requirements of the vehicle the cassette system can avoid the vehicle carrying unnecessary weight, with the attendant negative effects on environment and performance, provided the proper range and power requirements of the next journey are estimated.
Where kerbside recharging is difficult, removable cassette batteries will enable charging to be carried out safely in a shop, house or other premises; removal means added security and protection of the batteries from high temperature degradation.

Claims (1)

  1. CLAIMS1. Removable battery cassettes allow batteries from vehicles to be stored out of potentially damaging high and low temperatures present in certain ambient conditions, 2. Removable battery cassettes contribute to the security of vehicles from theft or mis-use, 3. Removable battery cassettes reduce unnecessary carriage of weight and hence use of energy.
