Abstract

An anti-wrinkle pillow unit comprises a flat base which is designed to be supported on a mattress and which has two projections adapted to lie either side of the neck of the sleeper. The surface of the pillow unit between the projections and to either side of them is shaped to fit the back of the head and neck of the user. At least the projections consist of an inner increased rigidity core and an outer compressible layer made of foam material. The increased rigidity core may have an increased density compared to the outer layer of foam material. The pillow unit may have an outer knitted fabric cover to provide a fabric surface which feels cooler than the foam material. The outer compressible layer may be formed of polyurethane memory foam.

Description

ANTI WRINKLE PILLOW
This invention relates to improved pillows for supporting the head of a person while sleeping.
Although most existing pillows on the market provide some degree of both comfort and support, they unfortunately still allow the user to sleep on their side, or allow the user to roll from their back onto their side. Whilst sleeping on your side, pressure is put onto the delicate facial skin surface which creates unsightly "morning-wrinkles" and creases on the face and décolleté. When a person, rather than sleeping on his or her back, sleeps on his or her side or front, these lines become deeper and permanent.
There have been attempts to design pillows that would reduce this creasing and wrinkling of skin, but all such prior designs and variations have bolsters to potentially keep the head from rolling or supports to elevate the face during sleep whilst sleeping on your side. However even if the face is supported on its side through elevation, these will not necessarily prevent lines around the eyes, forehead, and possibly cheeks depending on how the user sleeps, and most definitely do not prevent lines forming on the décolleté.
We have invented an "anti-wrinkle" pillow that surpasses the limitations of other designs. Instead of manipulating pressure or height, as do other "anti-wrinkle" pillows, the present design has two side projections which cradle around the user's neck and holds the head in position. This maintains and encourages the user's sleep pattern on their back whilst supporting the user's face just under the jawline keeping the face in an upright position whilst comfortably supporting the neck. This protects the face and décolleté area from any pressure caused from side sleeping, so diminishing the formation of sleep lines and creases. The centre of the pillow has a contour or depression for the back of the head to rest in.
The preferred form of construction is of a relatively rigid core and an overlying resilient foam material, preferably of memory foam type.
The preferred memory foam is a type of polyurethane foam often referred to as a viscoelastic polyurethane foam. When the user places their head on the pillow, the foam is subjected to pressure from the user's head and neck causing the two side projections to use the foam's mechanical resilience and the two projections sit around the users neck and support the users face just under the jawline keeping the head in place and the user's face in an upright position whilst comfortably supporting the neck.. The foam absorbs the weight of the user's head whatever shape or size, and forms a cradle that moulds to the neck contours so essentially one size fits all. We have found that a memory foam with a density of 50kg/m3 works well and is very responsive. The foam is soft enough for the user to be comfortable and supported but not too soft that the face is not held in position.
The pillow may have a cotton stocking material covering the foam, which provides a cooling functions to reduce sensations from heat. A second cover, for example made from silk, may be present, both to enhance protection of the user's skin and also to protects hair from breaking and reduce or eliminate "Bedhead".
This pillow overcomes the problem of other pillows on the market. With respect to prior pillows designed to prevent creasing of facial areas, even though a user using another pillow may place the pillow in the correct position to avoid wrinkling before falling asleep, since other designs depend upon being correctly positioned adjacent to which the face must be maintained in order for the pillow to function properly, prior art pillows can very easily lose their efficiency if the user moves his or her head up or down during sleep. This pillow, however, is much less affected by this type of movement since the support comfortably restricts movement of the head. Once in position, therefore, the present invention not only maintains the proper sleeping posture of the head and neck, but also ensures that the facial skin is free from any unnecessary contact and restriction of turning onto their side whilst the user sleeps, and stops any creases on the décolleté.
A pillow according to the invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig 1 shows the main view of the pillow Fig 2 shows a top view of the pillow showing projections and contour for back of head comfort Fig 3 shows a view of an inner relatively rigid core section which fits within the outer resilient foam section (not shown in this Figure) ; and Fig 4 shows the location of the user's head when the pillow is in use.

Claims 1 A pillow unit with a flat base which is designed to be supported on a mattress and which has two projections adapted to lie either side of the neck of the sleeper and where the surface of the pillow unit between the projections and to either side of them is shaped to fit the back of the head and neck of the user, and where at least the projections consist of an inner increased rigidity core and an outer compressible layer, the outer layer at least being made of foam material.
  2. 2 A pillow unit according to claim 1 where the increased rigidity core has an increased density compared to the outer layer of foam material.
  3. 3 A pillow unit according to claim 1 or 2 and having an outer knitted fabric cover to provide a fabric surface which feels cooler than the foam material
  4. 4. A pillow according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the outer compressible layer is formed of polyurethane memory foam
