Abstract

A furniture set 1 comprising a sofa bed 10 comprising a base 11 with a planar top 12; and a table 30 formed from two halves 30A, 30B, each half 30A, 30B having a flat sheet 31A, 31B attached to a leg 32A, 32B. The sheets 31A, 31B are connectable to the sofa bed 10 to enlarge the surface 11 on which a mattress can be supported, with the legs 32A, 32B supporting the sheets 31A, 31B off the floor; and the legs 32A, 32B are connectable to each other to form a table 30, with one sheet 31A forming a table top and the other sheet 31B forming a surface that rests on the floor. The sofa bed 10 can have a back rest 20 that can be moved to enlarge the area of the surface 11 on which a mattress can be supported.

Description

TITLE: Furniture Set for a Vehicle The invention relates to a furniture set for a vehicle_ Many people have a van or other similar vehicle and convert the rear section of the vehicle into accommodation to sleep in and cook, orb work in. Vehicles in the form of vans of varying sizes are often used for such purposes. Such conversions means the vehicle such as a van is unable to be used for the purpose it was designed for, i.e. to transport goods.
The invention seeks to provide a furniture set which can be placed in a vehicle such as a van when it is required to use the vehicle as accommodation, or which can be removed to allow the vehicle to be used for other purposes such as transporting goods.
According to the present invention there is provided a furniture set comprising a) a sofa bed with base having planar top spaced from a floor, and b) a table formed from two halves each with a planar rectangular sheet member and a leg member, the sheets member of each table half either being connectable to the sofa to extend the planar top to create a planar bed mattress support surface with the leg members supporting each sheet member off the floor and in the same plane as the planar top, or said two leg members being connectable together to form a longer leg spacing the sheet members to form a table with one sheet member forming a table top and the other sheet member able to rest on the floor.
Preferably the sofa has a base and back rest. Preferably the back rest is movable from a first positon as a back rest to a second position extending the area of the planar top when used as a bed.
Preferably backrest has arms extending from its base which plug into apertures in a top face of the planar top when used as a back rest, or plug into apertures in a side face of the base when used to extend the area of the planar top when used as a bed.
Preferably the sheet member of each table half is connectable to the backrest when used in the second position to extend the area of the planar top.
Preferably the backrest has a rail connected to an upper edge, and said sheet members include hooks to engage the rail to connect the sheet members to the backrest.
Preferably the end of each leg member remote from its sheet member has a planar foot to engage the floor when the sheet member is connected to the backrest to extend the planar top, and the planar foot on one leg member can be connected to the foot of another leg member to form the longer leg spacing the sheet members to form a table. Preferably the planar feet are joined together by one or more releasable locking devices.
Preferably a storage unit is thither provided connectable to the sofa. The storage unit may adapted to store cooking utensils and appliances. Preferably the storage unit has a fold down worktop.
Preferably the f-umiture set is formed from sheet material such as wooden sheets.
Preferably the sofa bed planar top has removable panels to access a cavity in the sofa which can be used for storage An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure I shows a perspective view of a fitmiture assembly with the table and separate sofa bed when used as a sofa, Figure 2 shows a perspective view of the fumiture assembly with the two halves of the table separated, Figure 3 shows a perspective part exploded view of the sofa bed with the backrest removed and used to connect to the sofa bed to extend the area of the planar top, Figure 4 shows a perspective view of the sofa bed with the backrest and table halves used to form abed, and Figure 5 shows a perspective view of a storage unit connected to the sofa bed.
Referring to the drawings there is shown a furniture set 1.
As shown in Figure 1, fumiture set I has a sofa bed 10 formed from shaped sheets of plywood (or other sheet material) glued and optionally fastened (with screws or the like) together. Joints between sheets of plywood may be made using castellated joints, or mortice and tenon joints, as can be seen_ Soft bed 10 has a rectangular box 11 formed by a base having planar top 12 spaced from a floor by four side walls 13A,13B,13C,I3D. Top 12 forms a seat for the sofa bed when used as a sofa, and cushion's may be provided for comfort. Box 11 has a pair of removable lids 14A,1411 to give access to the inside of the box 11 so that the box may be used for storage. Apertures in the form of three pairs of spaced slots 15A,15B,15C are provided in the side wall 13B (see Figure 3), and apertures in the form of three pairs of spaced slots 15A,15B,15C are provided in the planar top 12 (see Figure 3).
Sofa bed 10 also has a rectangular backrest 20. Backrest 20 has a backrest fiame 21 connected to the box 11 with arms in the form of three pairs of support struts 22A,22B,22C. Pairs of support struts 22A,22B,22C taper so the backrest frame is supported at an angle to the box 11. Pairs of support struts 22A,22B,22C are longer than the height of backrest 20 and the lower projecting sections of the struts 22A,22B,22C can extend through the three pairs of spaced slots 15A,15B,15C in the planar top 12 to secure backrest 20 in a first position to the box 11. The lower projecting sections of the pairs of struts 22A,22B,22C each have cut-outs 23A,23B.
(Figure 3) which can engage with bars inside the box 11 to keep the struts at 90 degrees to the planar top 12.
As shown in Figure 3, backrest 20 can be removed from the planar top 12 and the three pairs of supports struts 22A,22B,22C can be inserted into through the three pairs of spaced slots 15A,15B,15C in the side wall 13B, to place the backrest in a second position extending the area of the planar top when used as a bed.
Preferably the backrest 20 has a rail 24 connected to the upper projecting sections pairs of struts 22A,22B,22C whereby the rail is connected to the upper edge of the backrest. The rail 24 supports pivoting backrest floor legs 25A,25B,25C which pivot to a first position within the pairs of struts 22A,22B,22C when the backrest is connected to the top face 12 (Figure 1) , to a second position with floor legs 25A,25B,25C substantially normal to the backrest to engage the floor when the backrest is connected to the side wall I3B (Figure 3).
A table 30 of two halves 30A,30B (Figures 1 and 2) each have a planar rectangular sheet member 31A,31B and a leg member 32A,32B. The sheets member of each table are either connectable to the sofa extended by the backrest 20 to extend the planar top to create a planar bed mattress support surface with the leg members supporting each sheet member off the floor and in the same plane as the planar top (Figure 4), or the two leg member are connectable together to form a longer leg spacing the sheet members to form a table with one sheet member 31A forming a table top and the other sheet member 31B able to rest on the floor (Figure 1) . The end of each leg member 32A,32B remote from its sheet member 31A,3 1B has a planar foot 33A,33B to engage the floor when the sheet members 31A,31B is connected to the backrest to extend the planar top (Figure 4). Also sheet members 31A,3 1B include three hooks 34A,34B,34C to engage the rail 14 to connect securely the sheet members to the backrest 20. A suitable locking device may be provided to releasably secure the hooks on the rail to prevent the sheet members moving away from the backrest when a bed is formed.
The planar foot 33A of one leg member 32A can be connected to the foot 33B of another leg member 32B to form the longer leg spacing the sheet members 31A,3 1B to form a table (Figure 1) . Preferably the planar feet 33A,33B are joined together by one or more releasable locking devices such as interlocking peg devices 35.
As shown in the drawings, the furniture set further comprises a storage unit 50 connectable to the sofa bed 10. The storage unit 50 may be adapted to store cooking utensils and appliances to form a compact kitchen. Preferably the storage unit has a fold down worktop 51.
As shown in Figure 5, cushions 60 can be used to make the sofa more comfortable, and make a mattress when the sofa bed is used as a bed.
In use, a person with a suitable vehicle such as van can place the furniture set in the van in order provide temporary accommodation. The sofa bed can either be used as a sofa with the use of the table in the day, or the sofa bed and table can be used as a bed at night. The storage unit allows for a temporary kitchen. The furniture set can then be removed from the van to restore the van (or other vehicle) to normal use, e.g. to transport goods.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.

Claims (13)

  1. CLAIMSI. A furniture set comprising a) a sofa bed with base having planar top spaced from a floor, and b) a table formed from two halves each with a planar rectangular sheet member and a leg member, the sheets member of each table half either being connectable to the sofa to extend the planar top to create a planar bed mattress support surface with the leg members supporting each sheet member off the floor and in the same plane as the planar top, or said two leg members being connectable together to form a longer leg spacing the sheet members to form a table with one sheet member forming a table top and the other sheet member able to rest on the floor.
  2. 2. A furniture set according to claim 1, wherein the sofa has a base and back rest.
  3. 3. A furniture set according to claim 2, wherein the back rest is movable from a first positon as a back rest to a second position extending the area of the planar top when used as a bed.
  4. 4. A furniture set according to claim 2 or 3, wherein the backrest has arms extending from its base which plug into apertures in a top face of the planar top when used as a back rest, or plug into apertures in a side face of the base when used to extend the area of the planar top when used as a bed.
  5. 5. A furniture set according to any preceding claim, wherein the sheet member of each table half is connectable to the backrest when used in the second position to extend the area of the planar top.
  6. 6. A furniture set according to claim 5, wherein the backrest has a rail connected to an upper edge, and said sheet members include hooks to engage the mil to connect the sheet members to the backrest.
  7. 7. A furniture set according to any preceding claim, wherein the end of each leg member remote from its sheet member has a planar foot to engage the floor when the sheet member is connected to the backrest to extend the planar top, and the planar foot on one leg member can be connected to the foot of another leg member to form the longer leg spacing the sheet members to form a table.
  8. 8. A furniture set according to claim 7, wherein the planar feet are joined together by one or more releasable locking devices.
  9. 9. A furniture set according to any preceding claim, wherein a storage unit is further provided connectable to the sofa. I0
  10. 10. A furniture set according to claim 9, wherein the storage unit is adapted to store cooking utensils and appliances.
  11. 11. A furniture set according to claim 9 or 10, wherein the storage unit has a fold down worktop.
  12. 12. A furniture set according to any preceding claim, wherein the furniture set is formed from sheet material such as wooden sheets.
  13. 13. A furniture set according to any preceding claim, wherein the sofa bed planar top has removable panels to access a cavity in the sofa which can be used for storage.
