Brief Description of the Figures
One or more aspects will now be described, by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings having like-reference numerals, in which: Figures la and lb show, respectively, an assembled view and a disassembled view of a luminaire.
Figure 2 shows a view of the luminaire from below.
Figure 3 shows a view of the luminaire when installed. -6 -
Figures 4a and 4b show exploded views of a base of the luminaire. Detailed Description Referring to Figures la, 1b, and 2, there are shown assembled and disassembled views of a luminaire. The luminaire comprises a luminaire base 100 (e.g. a lamp holder) and a luminaire head 200 (e.g. a lamp).
The luminaire head 200 is inserted into the luminaire base 100 so that a lighting element of the luminaire head (e.g. a light emitting diode) is able to output light through the luminaire base. The luminaire base typically comprises an opaque section 102 that is arranged to block the passage of light through a section of the lighting element and an emitting section that is arranged to allow the passage of light. This emitting section may, for example, comprise a transparent or translucent material. Equally, the emitting section may be an open section (with no componentry that could block or reduce the emission of light). The luminaire base can then be used to provide a directional light output without requiring a specialised luminaire head.
Typically, the luminaire head 200 comprises a heat sink that is arranged to absorb the heat produced by a lighting element. The luminaire head may also comprise a power input that is arranged to supply power to the lighting element (e.g. from a battery or from a mains power source). It will be appreciated that such components could equally be provided in the luminaire base 100.
Typically, the luminaire is used as a downlighter and/or an uplighter and/or a wall lighter (e.g. a wallwasher light). The luminaire is typically used to illuminate a wall, where the luminaire is oriented so that the opaque section 102 blocks the passage of light towards the centre of a room. Light is then able to pass through the emitting section so as to cast light along a wall. This provides a pleasing environment without the risk of glare.
It will be appreciated that other methods of directing, blocking, and/or reflecting light may be used. For example, a luminaire head 200 may be used that has an adjustable lighting element so that the direction of the light output by the luminaire head is adjustable.
Referring to Figure 3, there is shown a view of the luminaire when installed. The luminaire may be installed in a recess of a panel 300 (e.g. a ceiling panel) so that light is emitted from the recess. This enables the luminaire head 200 to be located behind the panel so that it is obscured from view.
To ensure accurate positioning of the luminaire in the recess, the luminaire base 100 typically comprises a first coil spring 160-1 and a second coil spring 160-2. Such a luminaire can be placed in the recess 300 so that a bezel 104 of the luminaire rests against an outer surface of the panel 300 and the coil springs rest against an inner surface of the panel. The coil springs exert a force on the panel that acts to push the luminaire away from the panel (e.g. to move the luminaire into a ceiling); the bezel rests on the outer surface of the panel and resists the force of the coil springs to keep the luminaire in place. With this arrangement, the bezel rests on the outer surface of the panel without a visible gap between the bezel and the panel.
The coil springs are typically arranged (e.g. sized) so that when a user wishes to remove the luminaire from the panel 300, the user is able to pull on the luminaire such that the coil springs 160-1, 160-2 uncoil and the luminaire can be removed. Therefore, the coil springs enable the luminaire to be held in a desirable position against the panel 300 while still enabling the luminaire to be removed (or installed) without the need for tools.
It will be appreciated that the use of the coil springs 160-1, 160-2 is optional. Alternative structures may be used to hold the luminaire in place when it is installed (e.g. an adhesive, a retaining pin, or screws).
Referring to Figures 4a and 4b, there are shown exploded views of the luminaire base 100.
Figure 4b shows a view in which the components of the luminaire are rotated as compared to those of Figure 4a.
The luminaire base 100 comprises: a mounting component 110; an optic component 120; a mesh component 130 (or louvre 130); a baffle component 140; a bezel component 150; and the coil springs 160-1, 160-2.
The mounting component 110 comprises an attachment structure 112 for mounting the luminaire head 200 onto the luminaire base 100. This mounting structure may, for example, comprise a plurality of protrusions that are arranged to retain the luminaire head. With such a structure, the luminaire head can be located on the mounting component before being rotated so that a portion of the luminaire head is located beneath the protrusions (and thus the luminaire base and the luminaire head cannot be pulled apart). It will be appreciated that numerous mounting structures are known in the art.
Typically, the mounting component 110 is formed from a black material and/or a low-glare material to improve the visual comfort of users near the light. Similarly, any of the other components of the luminaire may comprise anti-glare material to improve visual comfort.
Typically, the attachment structure 112 is arranged so that the luminaire head 200 can be mounted without the need for tools. This simplifies installation and repair of the luminaire.
In some embodiments, a kit of parts is provided that comprises a plurality of luminaire heads (e.g. with different lighting elements) so that a user is able to select a desired luminaire head -8 -and to mount this desired luminaire head to the mounting component 110. This increases the versatility of the luminaire base 100.
The optic component 120 is arranged to direct light from a lighting element through the remainder of the luminaire base 100 so that it can pass through the emitting section (the lighting element is typically located in the luminaire head 200). For example, the optic component may comprise a series of holes through which light can pass. In some embodiments, the optic component comprises a blocking or reflective element that is arranged to prevent the passage of light in an undesired direction and/or to reflect light in the intended direction.
In some embodiments, the optic component 120 comprises a lens (or a diffuser) that is located between the lighting element and the output of the light so that light passes through this lens before being emitted from the luminaire. The lens may, for example, comprise a translucent lens that diffuses light emitted by the lighting element, and/or a coloured lens.
In some embodiments, the optic component 120 comprises an opaque portion that is arranged to block the passage of light in a certain direction. The opaque portion is typically perpendicular to the blocking or reflective element (so that the opaque portion may be used to channel light through holes in the opaque element in the direction of emission of light from the luminaire whereas the reflective element may be used to reflect light perpendicular to the direction of emission of light from the luminaire).
The optic component 120 comprises a protrusion 122 that is arranged to fit within a recess 114 (e.g. a hole) of the mounting component 110. This enables the optic component part to be attached to the inner part. Furthermore, the use of a protrusion and a recess ensures that the optic component and the inner part can only be attached at a desired orientation.
The louvre 130 comprises a plurality of (optionally angled) slats that are arranged to block the passage of light in at least one direction. Typically, when the luminaire is installed in a ceiling, the louvre is arranged to block the passage of light parallel to a wall (but to allow the passage of light perpendicular to the wall. Therefore, the louvre is useable to ensure that a wall is well lit, while reducing or eliminating glare when a user is located in line with the luminaire along that wall.
More specifically, the louvre 130 is arranged to reduce (and/or prevent) the emission of light from the luminaire in one or more direction, e.g. along a first axis, and to allow the emission of light in a different direction, e.g. along a second axis. Typically, the first axis and the second axis are perpendicular, so that the louvre enables light to pass directly towards a wall, but blocks light from passing along a wall. -9 -
Typically, the louvre 130 is formed of metal slats and/or a mesh of metal slats. More specifically, the louvre may comprise interwoven strands of flat metal strips. The slats of the louvre are typically arranged in parallel so as to block the emission of light in a particular direction along the entire diameter of the luminaire. In some embodiments, the slats may be arranged in a curved pattern so as to block the emission of light from the luminaire towards a specific point in a room. In some embodiments, the louvre comprises a fabric mesh.
The optic component 120, the louvre 130, and the baffle component 140 are arranged (e.g. sized) so that when the luminaire is assembled the louvre is held in place between the optic component and the baffle component. Typically, the baffle component comprises a recess 147 that is arranged to receive the louvre. In the embodiment of the figures, the baffle component comprises a ledge around its inner circumference and this ledge comprises a recess into which the louvre is arranged to fit. The recess ensures the correct placement of the louvre during assembly and results in the louvre being held in the recess between the optic component and the baffle component when the luminaire is assembled.
The optic component 120 is arranged to fit snugly within the baffle component 140 so that at certain orientations the insertion of the optic component into the baffle component is prevented, or resisted, by the protrusion 122 of the optic component abutting a perimeter of the baffle component. The baffle component comprises a groove 149 in the perimeter, which groove is arranged to receive the protrusion 122 of the optic component 120 so that the optic component can be inserted into the baffle component at a single orientation.
The protrusion 122 of the optic component 120 thus ensures that the optic component is correctly oriented in the mounting component 110 (by interacting with the recess 114 of the mounting component) and further ensures that both the optic component and the mounting component are correctly oriented in the baffle component 140 (by interacting with the recess 149 of the baffle component).
The baffle component 140 further comprises a (e.g. screw) hole 146 in the groove 149, which hole is arranged to receive a first screw 170-1. The hole is located in the groove such that, when the luminaire is assembled, the protrusion 122 of the optic component 120 is held in place by the first screw. More specifically, the first screw protrudes through the screw hole so as to form a barrier to the removal of the protrusion of the optic component from the groove 149. The screw may also be used to hold the louvre 130 in place, where the louvre may comprise a hole for receiving the screw and/or where the screw may abut the louvre to hold the louvre in place. In some embodiments, the screw is arranged to prevent axial movement of the louvre into and/or out of the luminaire base (e.g. where the louvre may be held between the screw and an inner surface of the bezel of the bezel component 150).
It will be appreciated that such a barrier could be provided by a different structure, such as a retaining pin so that more generally the baffle component 140 comprises a hole for receiving a retaining member. Where a screw is used, the screw is able to provide a retaining member for securing the optic component 120 (and the mounting component 110) in the baffle component and the screw is also able to connect (e.g. attach) the baffle component to the bezel component 150.
In this regard, the bezel component 150 comprises a screw hole 152-1 that corresponds to the screw hole 146 of the baffle component so that in order to assemble to luminaire the screw holes 152-1, 146 can be aligned and the first screw 170-1 is then able to pass through the screw holes 152-1, 146 in order to both connect the baffle component and the bezel component and hold the optic component 120 and the mounting component 110 in place.
Typically, the baffle component 140 comprises a further screw hole 142 that is aligned with a further screw hole 152-2 of the bezel component 150 so that a second screw 170-2 can be placed through these components to securely hold together each of the components of the luminaire. The screw holes 146, 152-1 and the further screw holes 142, 152-2 are typically arranged on opposing sides of the baffle component and the bezel component so that each side of the luminaire base is held in place by one of the screws 170-1, 170-2.
The screw hole 146 is typically arranged so that the first screw 170-1 can be passed through the hole so as to prevent the removal of the protrusion 122 of the optic component 120 from the groove 149 of the baffle component 140 (by providing a blockage in the groove). The further screw hole 152-1 is typically arranged so that the second screw 170-2 pinches the baffle component and/or the optic component 120 so as to hold the optic component in place within the baffle component and the bezel component 150 (e.g. via friction caused by the contact between the second screw and the optic component).
To ensure that the baffle component 140 and the bezel component 150 are located in the right orientation (particularly in embodiments with the further screw holes 142, 152-2), the bezel component typically comprises a ledge 156 that is arranged to interact with a cut-out 148 of the baffle component. More specifically, the ledge prevents the baffle component from being inserted into the bezel component unless the ledge of the bezel component is aligned with the cut-out if the baffle component. Equally, the baffle component may comprise the ledge with the bezel component comprising the cut-out.
The baffle component 140 and the bezel component 150 are connected via the first screw 170-1 and the second screw 170-2. These screws are typically grub screws so that the baffle component and the bezel component can be connected without the need for further componentry. The use of grub screws enables the baffle component and the bezel component to be connected and unconnected in a straightforward manner with only simple tools.
The grub screws 170-1, 170-2 (or more generally the retaining member for connecting the baffle component 140 and the bezel component 150) may be arranged to not protrude beyond the surface bezel component. This reduces the size of a cut-out required so that the luminaire can be placed into the panel 300.
The baffle component 140 is typically arranged to fit inside of the bezel component 150. This enables the baffle component to comprise a low glare, and/or reflective, material while the bezel component provides a decorative finish and/or a surface that simplifies the placement of the luminaire into the panel.
The coil springs 160-1, 160-2 are connected to the bezel component 150 via coil spring screws 164-1, 164-2 that pass through spring holes 162-1, 162-2 of the coil springs, spring holes 1541, 154-2 of the bezel component, and spring holes 144 of the baffle component 140. In some embodiments, the spring holes of the baffle component do not extend through the walls of the baffle component so that the coil spring screws do not pass into the interior of the baffle component. Each of the spring holes may be threaded so that they hold the coil spring screws in place. Similarly, any holes mentioned elsewhere in this document may comprise threaded holes (e.g. the screw holes 146, 152-1).
It will be appreciated that other fixing structures may be used to attach the coil springs to the remainder of the luminaire.
The bezel component 150 comprises a bezel 151 that, as described with reference to Figure 3, holds the light in place in a panel. The bezel component also comprises the opaque section 102 and the emitting section.
The baffle component 140 and the bezel component 150 together prevent the spreading of light in unintended directions and direct light from the luminaire in a desired direction (through the emitting section).
The optic component 120 may comprise a plurality of protrusions 122, with the baffle component 140 comprising a plurality of grooves 149. This enables the use of multiple retaining members so as to ensure a tight fit between the components regardless of the size of the components. The use of multiple retaining member also provides redundancy and enables the use of components with greater dimensional tolerances. Where a plurality of protrusions and/or grooves are provided, the protrusions and/or grooves may be arranged symmetrically about the optic component or the baffle component; however, this can result in a plurality of assembly orientations being possible. Therefore, the protrusions and/or the -12 -grooves may be arranged asymmetrically about the optic component and the baffle component so that there is only a single orientation at which assembly of the components of the luminaire base 100 is possible.
Alternatives and Modifications Various other modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art. It will be understood that the present invention has been described above purely by way of example, and modifications of detail can be made within the scope of the invention.
For example, in some embodiments the luminaire base comprises a waterproofing component such as an o-ring or a gasket. Such a waterproofing component may be located adjacent the optic component 120. Typically, the waterproofing component is compressible (so as to form a seal) and is held in place by being compressed between the optic component and the mounting component 110. In some embodiments, the waterproofing component comprises a recess that is arranged to receive the protrusion so as to hold the waterproofing component in place (e.g. the protrusion 122 may pass through the recess of the waterproofing component before passing through the recess 114 of the mounting component.
In some embodiments, the baffle component 140 and the bezel component 150 are combined, where this combined component comprises the groove 149 and the screw holes 146, 152-1.
More generally, the luminaire base 100 may comprise a first component (or an 'outer component) that is one or more of the baffle component 140 and the bezel component 150, where the optic component 120 and the mounting component 110 are connected to this first component using (one or more of) the screws 170-1, 170-2.
Similarly, the optic component 120 and the mounting component 110 may be combined in a single component that both directs the light from a lighting element and enables the luminaire base 100 to be attached to the luminaire head 200.
More generally, the luminaire base 100 may comprise a second component (or an 'inner component) that is one or more of the mounting component 110 and the optic component 120, where the baffle component 140, the bezel component 150, and/or the first component are connected to this second component using (one or more of) the screws 170-1, 170-2.
Each feature disclosed in the description, and (where appropriate) the claims and drawings may be provided independently or in any appropriate combination.
