DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a bed and a bed frame. Some relate to a bed and a bed frame shaped for positioning in a corner of a room. The bed can be referred to as a corner bed and the bed frame can be referred to as a corner bed frame.
FIGs la and lb illustrate, respectively, plan and perspective views of a first example bed frame 100 according to embodiments of the invention. The bed frame 100 comprises a horizontal platform 110 and a support 140 for the platform 110. The platform 110 comprises a first portion 120 and a second portion 130. The dashed line in FIGs 1a and lb illustrates the boundary between the first portion 120 and the second portion 130 of the platform 110. The first portion 120 has a triangular shape and the second portion 130 has a rectangular shape. The platform 110 is for supporting a mattress.
Coordinate axes 50 are illustrated in FIG. la that include an x axis and a y axis. The coordinate axes 50 as illustrated in FIG. lb include an x axis, a y axis, and a z axis. The z dimension, which may also be known as the height dimension, is aligned with the height of the bed frame 100. The y dimension, which may also be known as the length dimension, is aligned with the length of the bed frame 100. The x dimension, which may also be known as the width dimension, is aligned with the width of the bed frame 100.
The length of the bed frame 100 is greater than the width. In this example the width of the bed frame 100 is greater than the height. In other examples, however, the height of the bed frame 100 is greater than the width. In normal use, the bed frame 100 extends vertically in the z dimension and extends horizontally in the x and y dimensions.
The bed frame 100 has a length in the length dimension, a width in the width dimension, and a height in the height dimension. The platform 110 is substantially aligned with a plane defined by the width and length dimensions. The first portion 120 of the platform 110 has a triangular shape in the plane defined by the width and length dimensions. The second portion 130 of the platform 110 has a rectangular shape in the plane defined by the width and length dimensions. The rectangular shape may be a rounded rectangle In the illustrated example, the platform 110 is substantially flat with the first portion 120 being level with the second portion 130. As such, the first portion 120 and second portion 130 are in the same horizontal plane. The first portion 120 may be integrally formed with the second portion 130 and is contiguous with the second portion 130. In some examples the platform 110 is a one-piece member, whereas in others it can be comprised of a plurality of pieces. The platform 110 may be the upper surface of the bed frame 100 and may be in contact with a mattress when supporting the mattress.
As the first portion 120 has a triangular shape and the second portion 130 have a rectangular shape, the platform 110 can have a pentagonal shape. This may be a rectangular pentagon/house shape, with the platform 110 having substantially the shape shown in FIG. la, i.e., a convex pentagon where two non-adjacent sides 132, 134 have equal lengths and each of these two equal length sides forms a right angle with the intervening side 133. The platform 110 may have a pentagonal prism shape, with the first portion 120 having a triangular prism shape and the second portion 130 having a rectangular prism shape.
In the illustrated example, the first portion 120 has a right-angled triangular shape with the angle of the triangle corner furthest from the second portion 130 (the apex of the triangle) being 90°. In other examples, however, the first portion 120 may have a different triangular shape such as an isosceles triangle or an equilateral triangle. As such the angle of the triangle corner furthest from the second portion 130 may be less than or greater than 90°. The angle of the triangle corner furthest from the second portion 130 may be 60° to 120° or 75° to 105°. The illustrated first portion 120 has a non-truncated triangular shape, however in other examples the first portion 120 may have a truncated triangular shape.
The first portion 120 of the platform 110 has a triangular shape with three edges 121123. In the illustrated example there are two equal length shorter edges 122, 123 and a longer edge 121. The second portion 130 of the platform 110 has a rectangular shape with four edges 131-134. In the illustrated example there are two parallel and equal length shorter edges 131, 133 and two parallel and equal length longer edges 132, 134. In some examples all the edges 131-134 are the same length. In some examples the longer edge 121 of the first portion 120 is contiguous with an edge 131-134 of the second portion 130. This edge 131-134 may be one of the shorter edges 131, 133 of the second portion 130.
In the example of FIGs la and lb, the support 140 is a bed base/foundation positioned underneath the platform 110 and which supports the platform 110 from below with the platform 110 positioned on the support 140. The support 140 may be or comprise a box spring. In other examples, some or all of the support 140 is not positioned underneath the platform 110. For example, the support 140 may comprise rope, cables or other line means for hanging the platform 110. The illustrated support 140 is substantially the same shape and size as the platform 110 in a plane defined by the length and width dimensions. As such the support 140 has a pentagonal shape comprising a first part having a triangular shape and the second part having a rectangular shape. In other examples, the support 140 may be a different shape, for example the support 140 may comprise a plurality of legs, such as four legs. The support 140 and platform 110 may be attached by any suitable means. For example, by a mechanical fastener such as a screw, or by adhesive.
FIG. 2 illustrates a plan view of a second example bed frame 100 according to embodiments of the invention. In this example, the platform 110, which comprises a first portion 120 and a second portion 130, has an interior portion 111 and an exterior portion 112. The interior portion 111 and exterior portion 112 each span both the first portion 120 and the second portion 130, and may each comprise part of the first portion 120 and part of the second portion 130.
The interior portion 111 of the platform 110 may comprise one or more holes through the platform 110. The interior portion 111 can comprise slats 411 as shown in FIG. 4. Alternatively, the interior portion 111 may comprise ventilation holes in a flat surface, or a mesh or net. In further examples, the interior portion 111 does not comprise any holes.
The exterior portion 112 supports the interior portion 111. The illustrated exterior portion 112 surrounds the interior portion 111 in a plane defined by the length and width dimensions. In some examples, the exterior portion 112 does not completely surround the interior portion 111. The interior portion 111 may be substantially level with the exterior portion 112. The interior portion 111 may be integrally formed with the exterior portion 112 and is contiguous with the exterior portion 112.
In some examples, a mattress may be supported only by the interior portion 111 of the platform 110. In others a mattress may be supported only by the exterior portion 112 of the platform 110, or a mattress may be supported by both the interior portion 111 and the exterior portion 112.
In the illustrated example, the (exterior portion 112 of the) bed frame 100 comprises a recess 113 which acts as a storage holder. This could be used for storing a book, a phone or other item. The illustrated bed frame 100 also comprises an electronic/computer port 114, which may be a USB port, for example a USB 3.2 port.
The recess 113 and electronic port 114 may be positioned in the platform 110 such that they would not be covered by a mattress and so remain accessible to a user. The bed frame 100 may also comprise a speaker which may be controlled by the electronic port 114. The speaker may be positioned near to the electronic port 114.
FIGs 3a, 3b, and 3c illustrate plan views of third, fourth and fifth example bed frames according to embodiments of the invention. FIG. 3a illustrates a single bed frame 100; FIG. 3b illustrates a small double (queen) bed frame 100, and FIG. 3c illustrates a standard double bed frame 100. The dimensions provided in FIGs 3a, 3b, and 3c are in mm.
These figures illustrate a range of possible sizes and shapes of the bed frame 100, and thus the bed. The bed frame 100 may be any suitable size and shape including small single, king size, and super king size. The bed frame 100 may have a length of 1 m to 3m, or 1.5 m to 2.5 m. The bed frame 100 may have a width of 0.5 m to 2.5 m or 0.8 m to 2 m, and a height of 0.2 m to 3 m or 0.5 m to 1.5 m.
FIG. 4 illustrates a perspective view of a sixth example bed frame 100 according to embodiments of the invention. In this example the bed frame 100 comprises a platform 110, a support 140, a headboard 141 and a plurality of drawers 150, 160, 170 positioned within the support 140.
The bed frame 100 may be comprised of any suitable material including wood such as oak, pine or medium-density fibreboard, a metal such as steel, or a plastic such as high-density polyethylene or PMMA. Different elements of the bed frame 100 may be comprised of different materials.
The illustrated platform 110 comprises a plurality of slats 411 with openings between them. The slats 411 support the mattress whilst providing ventilation. The slats 411 extend horizontally in the width dimension across the platform 110. In an example the slats 411 may be 7 cm to 11 cm wide in the length dimension, and the openings between the slats 411 may each be less than 7 cm wide in the length dimension. The slats 411 may be comprised of any suitable material, such as pine.
The illustrated headboard 141 is positioned adjacent to the shorter edges 122, 123 of the first portion 120 of the platform 110. The headboard 141 extends around these edges 122, 123 and extends, in the height dimension, vertically up from the platform 110. In other examples the headboard 141 may be of a different shape and position, for example the headboard 141 may extend around only a portion of these edges 122, 123. In some examples, the bed frame 100 can comprise other elements such as a footboard or side rail.
The illustrated support 140 comprises a plurality of side walls and a plurality of openings for the drawers 150, 160, 170. The openings are positioned in the side walls of the support 140.
FIG. 5 illustrates a plan view of example drawers 150, 160, 170 according to embodiments of the invention. In the figure the drawers 150, 160, 170 are arranged relative to each other similarly to how they would be arranged when positioned in the support 140.
The drawers 150, 160, 170 may comprise runners/slides which aid in the sliding movement of the drawers 150, 160, 170 as they open and close. One portion of a runner may be positioned on the drawer 150, 160, 170, whilst a corresponding portion of the runner may be positioned on the support 140 in one of the openings. Any suitable form of runner may be used including a top mount, side mount, bottom mount, under mount or centre mount. In some examples, the runners ae capable of supporting up to 150 kg. The runners may be self-closing. In some embodiments no runners are present and the drawer 150, 160, 170 instead simply slides within the relevant opening in the support 140.
In use, the drawers 150, 160, 170 open and close as they are pulled out of and pushed into the openings in the support 140. As the drawers 150, 160, 170 open they each move along a direction of travel; that is, the drawers 150, 160, 170 have a direction of travel as they are pulled out of the support 140. The direction of travel may be caused by the direction of the runners, or by the angle of the side walls 152, 162, 174-178 of the drawer 150, 160, 170 relative to the sides of the opening in the support 140.
The drawers 150, 160, 170 may each comprise a handle 153, 163, 173 for opening and closing the drawer 150, 160, 170. The illustrated handles 153, 163, 173 are recesses, however in other examples the handles 153, 163, 173 may have a different form such as comprising a ring or a knob. The drawers 150, 160, 170 may comprise locks. In some examples the drawers 150, 160, 170 have a height in the height direction of 15 to 50 cm. The base 151, 161, 171 and/or side walls 152, 162, 174-178 of the drawers 150, 160, 170 may be transparent.
The first drawer 150 is positionable within the support 140 and comprises a base 151 and a plurality of walls 152. The illustrated base 151 has a parallelogram shape and at least one wall 152 of the drawer 150 is substantially parallel with one of the shorter edges 122, 123 of the first portion 120 of the platform 110.
The first drawer 150 is arranged to have a direction of travel as the drawer 150 opens, which is at an acute angle to an edge 134 of the second portion 130 of the platform 110. This direction of travel is at an acute angle to a side wall of the support 140. In some examples the direction of travel of the first drawer 150 is substantially parallel with one of the shorter edges 122, 123 of the first portion 120 of the platform 110. This direction of travel allows the drawer 150 to be pulled out fully without colliding with a nearby wall of the room or with furniture, allowing a larger drawer to be used and more efficient use of space.
The second drawer 160 is a mirror copy of the first drawer 150 and as such has the same features. Wien the first and second drawers 150, 160 are positioned in the support, the second drawer 160 is a mirror image of the first drawer 150 in a line of symmetry defined by the length of the bed frame 100. The illustrated second drawer 160 is positionable within the support 140 and comprises a base 161, a plurality of walls 162 and a handle 163. The illustrated base 161 of the second drawer 160 has a parallelogram shape which is a mirror image of the base 151 of the first drawer 150.
The third drawer 170 is positionable within the support 140 and comprises a base 171 and a plurality of walls 174-178. The illustrated base 171 has a pentagonal shape and comprises a first part having a triangular shape and a second part having a rectangular shape. In other examples, the base may be a different shape such as a quadrilateral or a different pentagonal shape.
The illustrated third drawer 170 comprises two walls 176, 178 which are parallel to each other, a wall 173 perpendicular to the parallel walls 176, 178 and connecting them, and two walls 174, 175 which are angled to the parallel walls 176, 178 and meet at a point. A wall 174, 175 of the third drawer 170 is substantially parallel with one of the shorter edges 122, 123 of the first portion 120 of the platform 110 In some examples, when the drawers 150, 160, 170 are positioned within the support 140, at least one wall 174, 175 of the third drawer 170 is substantially parallel with the direction of travel of the first drawer 150 or the second drawer 160. For example, when positioned within the support 140, one wall 174 of the third drawer 170 is substantially parallel with the direction of travel of the first drawer 150, and another wall 175 of the third drawer 170 is substantially parallel with the direction of travel of the second drawer 160. The shape of the third drawer 170 allows storage space within the drawer 170 to be maximized whilst allowing the third drawer 170 to fit within the support 140 alongside the first drawer 150 and/or the second drawer 160.
In some examples, one or more of the drawers 150, 160, 170 is replaced by a step which can aid a user in getting into and out of the bed. The step may comprise a tread/platform and a plurality of walls. The step may have substantially the same shape as one of the drawers 150, 160, 170 as described above and may have the same direction of travel as it is pulled out of and pushed into the support 140. The step may be remote controlled. The electronic port 114 may control the step.
FIG. 6 illustrates an exploded view of a first example bed 600 according to embodiments of the invention. The illustrated bed 600 comprises the bed frame 100 as described in FIGs la to 5, a mattress 610 positioned on the bed frame 110, and bedding 620.
Coordinate axes 50 are illustrated in FIG. 6 that include an x axis, a y axis, and a z axis. The z dimension, which may also be known as the height dimension, is aligned with the height of the bed 600. The y dimension, which may also be known as the length dimension, is aligned with the length of the bed 600. The x dimension, which may also be known as the width dimension, is aligned with the width of the bed 600. The length of the bed 600 is greater than the width. In normal use, the bed 600 extends vertically in the z dimension and extends horizontally in the x and y dimensions. The bed 600 and mattress 610 each have a length in the length dimension, a width in the width dimension, and a height in the height dimension.
The mattress 610 comprises a first part 612 with a triangular shape and a second part 613 with a rectangular shape. The mattress 610 is substantially flat with the first part 612 being level with the second part 613. In the illustrated mattress 610, the first part 612 is integrally formed with the second part 613 and is contiguous with the second part 613. In other examples the first part 612 and the second part 613 may be two separate pieces which may be joined by any suitable means, including mechanical fasteners such as straps, or hook and loop fasteners.
The illustrated mattress 610 is substantially the same shape and size as the bed frame 100. In particular the illustrated mattress 610 is substantially the same shape and size as the platform 110 in a plane defined by the length and width dimensions. In some examples the mattress 610 may be smaller or larger than the bed frame 100.
The illustrated mattress 610 has substantially the same shape as the platform 110 in that the first part 612 of the mattress 610 has substantially the same shape as the first portion 120 of the platform 110, and the second part 613 of the mattress 610 has substantially the same shape as the second portion 130 of the platform 110. As such, the descriptions in this document regarding the shape of the platform 110 also apply to the shape of the mattress 610.
The first part 612 of the mattress 610 has a triangular shape in a plane defined by the width and length dimensions. The second part 613 of the mattress 610 has a rectangular shape in the plane defined by the width and length dimensions. The rectangular shape may be a rounded rectangle. The mattress 610 can have a pentagonal shape. This may be a rectangular pentagon/house shape. The mattress 610 may have a pentagonal prism shape, with the first part 612 having a triangular prism shape and the second part 613 having a rectangular prism shape.
In the illustrated example, the first part 612 has a right-angled triangular shape with the angle of the triangle corner furthest from the second part 613 being 900. In other examples, however, the first part 612 may have a different triangular shape such an isosceles triangle or an equilateral triangle. As such the angle of the triangle corner furthest from the second part 613 may be less than or greater than 90°. The angle of the triangle corner furthest from the second part 613 may be 60° to 120° or 75° to 105°. The illustrated first part 612 has a non-truncated triangular shape, however in other examples the first part 612 may have a truncated triangular shape.
The first part 612 of the mattress 610 has a triangular shape with three edges. In the illustrated example there are two equal length shorter edges and a longer edge. The second part 613 of the mattress 610 has a rectangular shape with four edges. In the illustrated example there are two parallel and equal length shorter edges and two parallel and equal length longer edges. In some examples all the edges are the same length. In some examples the longer edge of the first part 612 is contiguous with an edge of the second part 613. This edge may be one of the shorter edges of the second part 613.
The mattress 610 may be any suitable type of mattress 610 and may be comprised of any suitable material. For example, the mattress 610 may be: an innerspring mattress, which may comprise pocket springs; a foam mattress comprising latex foam and/or memory foam; or a bladder mattress, such as an air mattress or water bed. Prior to positioning on the bed frame 100 the mattress 610 may be vacuum packed for ease of transportation.
Although the illustrated bed 600 comprises bedding 620, in some examples the bed 600 does not comprise bedding 620 and only comprises a bed frame 100 and a mattress 610. The bedding 620 may be of any suitable type and may comprise sheets, blankets, duvets and pillows. In some examples the bedding 620 comprises at least one triangular shaped pillow. The triangular shaped pillow may be a similar shape to the first part 612 of the mattress 610. In the illustrated example the pillows are positioned above the triangular first part 612 of the mattress 610, and thus the user's head would be positioned above the triangular first part 612 when lying on the bed 600. In other examples, however, the user may lie the other way around such that the pillow(s) and the user's head are positioned above the rectangular second part 613 of the mattress 610 The bed frame 100 is shaped so that the sides of the bed frame 100 which correspond to the triangular shaped portion 120 of the platform 110 align with the walls of a corner of a room. This allows the bed 600 to be positioned in the corner with the bed 600 extending diagonally into the room. By extending diagonally from a corner of a room, a bed 600 can make more efficient use of space in the room, and a longer bed 600 may be able to fit into the room than would otherwise be possible, thus providing a user more space. This provides additional headroom or foot room and can allow for taller users to use the bed. If a standard rectangular bed were to be located diagonally in a corner of a room, this would lead to wasted space behind the bed. This is not the case with the illustrated bed 600 and bed frame 100. An advantage of the invention is, therefore, that space is more efficiently used. A further advantage is that the illustrated bed 600 and bed frame 100 make more efficient use of space whilst still allowing users to exit and enter the bed 600 by each of the long sides of the bed 600.
FIG. 7 illustrates a perspective view of a second example bed 600 according to embodiments of the invention. FIG. 8 illustrates a perspective view of a third example bed 600 according to embodiments of the invention. The second and third example beds 600 may comprise any of the features described regarding the first example bed 600. In FIG. 7 the bed frame 100 comprises at least one light 701, 702. The illustrated frame lights 701 are angled downwards and are positioned around the perimeter of the bed frame 100, on a portion of the platform 110 which overhangs the support 140. The illustrated headboard light 702 is positioned on the headboard 141, which may eliminate the need for a separate bedside lamp. In some embodiments lights may be positioned underneath the bed. Some or all of the lights 701, 702 may be colour changing lights.
Where a structural feature has been described, it may be replaced by means for performing one or more of the functions of the structural feature whether that function or those functions are explicitly or implicitly described.
The term 'comprise' is used in this document with an inclusive not an exclusive meaning. That is any reference to X comprising Y indicates that X may comprise only one Y or may comprise more than one Y. If it is intended to use 'comprise' with an exclusive meaning then it will be made clear in the context by referring to "comprising only one.." or by using "consisting".
In this description, reference has been made to various examples. The description of features or functions in relation to an example indicates that those features or functions are present in that example. The use of the term 'example' or 'for example' or 'can' or 'may' in the text denotes, whether explicitly stated or not, that such features or functions are present in at least the described example, whether described as an example or not, and that they can be, but are not necessarily, present in some of or all other examples. Thus 'example', 'for example', 'can' or 'may' refers to a particular instance in a class of examples. A property of the instance can be a property of only that instance or a property of the class or a property of a sub-class of the class that includes some but not all of the instances in the class. It is therefore implicitly disclosed that a feature described with reference to one example but not with reference to another example, can where possible be used in that other example as part of a working combination but does not necessarily have to be used in that other example.
Although examples have been described in the preceding paragraphs with reference to various examples, it should be appreciated that modifications to the examples given can be made without departing from the scope of the claims. Features described in the preceding description may be used in combinations other than the combinations explicitly described above.
Although functions have been described with reference to certain features, those functions may be performable by other features whether described or not.
Although features have been described with reference to certain examples, those features may also be present in other examples whether described or not.
The term 'a' or 'the' is used in this document with an inclusive not an exclusive meaning. That is any reference to X comprising a/the Y indicates that X may comprise only one Y or may comprise more than one Y unless the context clearly indicates the contrary. If it is intended to use 'a' or 'the' with an exclusive meaning then it will be made clear in the context. In some circumstances the use of 'at least one' or 'one or more' may be used to emphasize an inclusive meaning but the absence of these terms should not be taken to infer any exclusive meaning.
The presence of a feature (or combination of features) in a claim is a reference to that feature or (combination of features) itself and also to features that achieve substantially the same technical effect (equivalent features). The equivalent features include, for example, features that are variants and achieve substantially the same result in substantially the same way. The equivalent features include, for example, features that perform substantially the same function, in substantially the same way to achieve substantially the same result.
In this description, reference has been made to various examples using adjectives or adjectival phrases to describe characteristics of the examples. Such a description of a characteristic in relation to an example indicates that the characteristic is present in some examples exactly as described and is present in other examples substantially as described.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features believed to be of importance it should be understood that the applicant may seek protection via the claims in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and/or shown in the drawings whether or not emphasis has been placed thereon.
