Ozone may be generated by ultraviolet light which may be emitted in an alternating manner between ozone generating and ozone reducing wavelengths of UV light. An electrical spark device may also be used to produce ozone. The UV light source 60 and 62 may be disposed in an elongate conduit through which air passes in a helical path 58 caused by a flow deflector 56 for increasing dwell or residence time. An ozone concentration sensor may be used to lock the container when unsafe levels are reached. The elongate conduit may comprise reflective surfaces, and a filter 52 for trapping larger organisms may be present which may be coated in antimicrobial chemicals.
Description
TRANSPORTATION OF FRESH PRODUCE
Field of the invention
The present Invention relates to containers for transportation of fresh produce. The term "fresh produce" is used herein to include fruit and vegetables as well as items having a limited shelf life, such as baked products, meat, and cheese
Background of the invention
It is important to ensure that fresh produce be delivered to retail stores in a condition that is fit for sale and with an acceptably long shelf life at its intended destination. To meet this objective, it is known for the containers delivering fresh produce to be refrigerated. It is also known for transport containers to be designed to serve as ripening chambers for products, such as bananas and some other produce, that need to be ripened while in transit.
Object of the invention The aim of the invention is to provide a transport container capable of increasing the shelf life of fresh produce
Summary of the invention
According to the present invention, there is provided a transport container for fresh produce having a storage chamber for the fresh produce and a system for circulating air within the storage chamber, wherein the air circulation system includes an air moving device and a purification unit comprising an ozone generator for killing, removing, or neutralizing organisms and micro-organisms in the circulated air or adhering to the produce The invention is predicated on appreciation of the fact that much of the degradation of the quality of fresh produce is caused by organisms and micro-organisms, such as bacteria, mold, spores and insects. Killing, removing, or neutralizing such micro-organisms in the circulated air prevents, or at least reduces, the growth of molds and other causes of putrefaction of the produce. Preventing or reducing of such degradation of the fresh produce during transportation serves to increase its shelf life at its intended destination. -2 -
The circulation of air containing ozone over the produce ensures that any organisms, such as mold, adhering to the produce, are also killed, not just the spores suspended in the air.
The air moving device may be a fan designed to move air at a high-volume rate but with low pressure. Alternatively, it may be designed as a high-pressure air source connected to drive a fluidic amplifier.
As a build-up of ozone in the container may present a hazard, it is desirable that the purification unit additionally comprise a source of ultraviolet light of a wavelength that causes conversion of ozone to oxygen and that is operated in alternating cycles with the ozone generator.
Ozone may be generated by an electrical spark but alternatively a second source of UV light, producing light of a different wavelength, may serve as an ozone generator.
In some embodiments, to safeguard operators, an ozone sensor may be provided to prevent opening of the container when the ozone concentration exceeds a preset level In some embodiments, all ultraviolet light sources of the purification unit are disposed in an elongate conduit through which the circulated air passes and, in order to prolong the dwell time of the circulated air in the elongate conduit and thereby increase the exposure time of the air to the UV radiation, a flow deflector is provided to cause the air to follow a helical path through the elongate conduit.
If desired, the air circulation system may additionally comprise a filter to trap larger organisms In some embodiments, the filter may be coated with an anti-microbial chemical to breakdown fomites in the circulating air and thereby increase the effectiveness of the germicidal UV radiation
Brief description of the drawings
The invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 shows schematically the interior of a storage or transportation container that is fitted with an air circulation system, and -3 -Figure 2 is an exploded view of the air circulation system of the container shown in Figure 1.
Detailed description of the drawings
Figure 1 shows a storage or transportation container 10 within which there are arranged pallets 12 carrying trays 14 of fresh produce The container may for example be a standard shipping container. The container is also equipped with an air circulation system 16 which is shown as mounted in the container but it may alternative be mounted externally of the storage space and connected to it by supply and return conduits to establish a constant recirculation of the air to which the fresh produce is exposed, as represented by arrows in Figure 1.
The recirculation system in the present invention is designed to kill, remove, or neutralize organisms and micro-organisms in the circulated air, as well as any adhering to the produce, as they cause degradation of the quality of the stored fresh produce and reduce its shelf life. An exploded view of an embodiment of a recirculation system is shown in Figure 2.
The air circulation system in Figure 2 comprises a fan unit 50 that serves as an air mover and provides the power needed to cause the air to recirculate. A fan is shown only as an example of an air moving device and any other suitable device, such an air compressor connected to a fluidic amplifier, may be used in its place. Before entering the fan unit 50, the air passes through a filter unit 52 that traps larger organisms, such as small insects. The filter may be coated with an antimicrobial chemical to assist in the eradication of micro-organisms by breaking down fomites and rendering them more susceptible to neutralisation by exposure to UV radiation.
The air blown by the fan unit is directed to a purification unit 56 that irradiates the air with UV light in a manner to be described below in more detail. However, to increase the dwell time of the air in the purification unit, and thereby increase its exposure to UV radiation, the air first passes through a flow diverter 54 designed to cause the air to follow a helical path through the purification unit 56 as represented in Figure 2 by an arrow 58. The flow diverter 56 comprises a rotationally symmetrical array of inclined surfaces that resemble the blades of an impeller, but the surfaces are stationary, the flow diverter having no moving parts. A diverter may not be required if the housing of the purification unit can -4 -be made of sufficient length to permit an acceptable exposure time of the circulating am to UV light.
Along the central axis of the purification unit and over its length, there are mounted axially two types of UV lamps 60 and 62. The lamps 60 emit light in the UV-C range, i.e. nm to 240nm, whereas the lamps 62 emit light in the UV-B range, i.e. 240nm -315nm. The UV-C light produced by the lamps 60 is not only itself harmful to microbes and other micro-organisms but it acts to ozonize oxygen in the ambient air. The produced ozone is a highly effective sterilizing agent, but a high concentration of ozone in the interior of the container is not desirable because of its reactive nature. It has however been discovered that UV-B light, as emitted by the lamps 62 is effective in neutralizing ozone, converting back to oxygen.
In an embodiment of the invention, the lamps 60 and 62 are operated alternately, the lamps 60 to generate ozone and the lamps 62 to limit its concentration in the circulated air. The lamps 60 and 62 may be operated with a fixed duty cycle or they may be designed to switch over between them, in dependence upon a sensed indication of the ozone concentration.
It is desirable to prevent doors of the container from being opening when the ozone concentration is high and it is therefore desirable to use the lamps 62 to reduce the ozone concentration until a sensor indicates that it is safe for an operator to open the doors and to enter the container.
To improve the exposure of the air to the UV radiation, it is desirable to render the interior surfaces of the purification unit reflective to UV light As an alternative to using a UV-C lamp 60 to generate ozone, it would be possible to use a spark discharge device within the purification unit 56. -s -
