Abstract

Apparatus and method for extending services for under a floor of a building into the building. The apparatus comprises a composite block pre-cut with apertures for service pipes and ducts and having a seal means to provide a seal between the pipes/ducts and the floor once the services are installed. The block is installed as part f a block beam floor structure.

Description

A composite building block
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a composite building block. More especially, the invention relates to a composite block with pre-cut apertures to allow for services pipes and ducts.
Background of the Invention
Ground floors of the majority of new-buiid constructions are created using a suspended block and beam concrete floor. The suspended floor has a void underneath to provide for air flow. Service ducts are located within the void. Currently, to extend the services upwardly and into the building concrete floor blocks are simply cut to allow access for the service pipes and ducts. This method can weaken the block floor structure and provides an rudimentary open passageway offering no protection to air or water.
The present invention seeks to provide apparatus and method for extending services from a block beam floor void into a building by providing and fitting one or more composite blocks which have been pm-cut with apertures to allow access of the service pipes and ducts therethrough, the apertures being provided with sealing means prevent the passage of water or air.
Statement of the Invention
In one aspect there is provided, a method of providing access of one or more service ducts from an underfloor cavity of a building into the building, the building having a block beam floor structure, the method comprising the steps of: providing and fitting a composite block in the floor structure of the building, the block having at least one pre-cut aperture to receive the duct therethrough in use; providing sealing means around the internal periphery of the or each aperture at least at the entrance thereof; and extending the or each duct through the respective apertures of the block.
In a second aspect, there is provided a composite block with pre-cut apertures for use with the method of claim 1.
Brief Description of the Drawings
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figures 1 is a perspective view of a pre-cut composite block constructed and fitted in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the block of figure 1 with the services extending therethrough; and Figure 3 is a schematic cross-section view a typical assembly.
Detailed Description of Preferred Embodiments
Referring to figure 1, a services extension assembly according to the invention comprises a composite block 2 which is shaped and dimensioned to equate to a standard concrete floor block otherwise used for a building floor and which would ordinarily be cut to allow access of 20 services The composite block 2 has one or more pre-cut apertures 4 extending entireiy through the biock 2. The number and diameters of the apertures 4 would depend on the number and diameters of the service ducts 6 that need to extend from under the floor 8, beneath the block 2, upwardly into the building.
A circumferential sealing element 10 is fitted around the internai periphery of each aperture 4 to provide a seal between the duct 6 and the block 2 thereby to prevent the passage of air or water once the pioework is extended through the apertures 4.
The sealing element 10 may for example take the form of a hollow plug that fits into the entrance of each the aperture 4.
Once the block 2 is fitted within the floor structure 8, the service pipes/ducts 6 are aligned and pushed through the apertures 4 and into the building above, as can be seen in figure 2.

Claims (3)

  1. CLAIMS1 A method of providing access of one or more service ducts from an underfloor cavity of a building into the building, the building having a block beam floor structure, the method comprising the steps of: providing and fitting a composite block in the floor structure of the building, the block having at least one pre-cut aperture to receive the duct therethrough in use; providing sealing means around the internal periphery of the or each aperture at least at entrance thereof; and extending the or each duct through the respective apertures of the block.
  2. 2. A composite block with pre-cut apertures for use with the method of claim 1.
  3. 3. A composite block according to claim 2, wherein the sealing means comprises a hollow plug locatable at least in the entrance of the or each aperture.
