Discharging.- Apparatus far use in discharging retorts comprises a travelling framework carrying a fixed or detachable plat form which is disposed at such a height that it may support a skip in a suitable position to receive coke from the upper tiers of retorts. Fig. 4 shows a platform A removably mounted by means of wheels A<2> on a travelling framework a which is formed with a vertical part a<2> fitted with wheels a<3> bearing against a guide member B<1>, and supports coke guiding surfaces, the lower of which are marked a<5>, a<6>, a<7>. In operation the skip rests on the platform A to receive coke from the upper retorts b, b<1>, the platform being removed and the skip resting on the ground when the lower retorts b<2>, b<3>, b<4> are being discharged. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the platform A is integral with the travelling framework a and carries a hopper D, the discharge outlet of which is controlled by a door d and is disposed in close proximity to the furnace mouth E. Lids d<2> are provided and serve, when open, to guide the coke into the hopper from which it is delivered as required into the furnace; when it is desired to load the coke into skips, the lids d<2> are closed and the skips are supported, as shown, on the platform A. A further construction is described in which a platform, removably mounted on the framework a, carries two hoppers D and a single central coke receiving shoot, a pivoted door being provided for putting the shoot into communication with either of the hoppers.
