Abstract

260,968. Smith, G. B. Nov. 5, 1925. [Convention date]. Delivery of articles stored in rotary drums.- The articles to be sold are stored in radial com. partments 19<a>, Figs. 5 and 6, of a rotary drum 13 and can be seen through windows in the front 41 of an outer casing. The drum is rotated counterclockwise by a handle 72 to bring the article selected in front of an opening, formed in a depression 46 of the casing 41 and normally closed by a pivoted sliding door 48. The handle is then turned, after insertion of a coin, in the opposite direction to open the door 48, the drum, while the door is open or being moved, being locked in position. The drum revolves on a central shaft 11 and has a depressed front wall 18 to which a toothed wheel 28 is attached bv a spider 22 forming a bearing for the shaft 11. The wheel 28 carries a spring-controlled pawl 34 which is acted on to rotate the drum by the cut-away end 127, Fig. 11, of a tube 118 loosely mounted on a shaft 71 carrying the handle 72. The tube is rotated by a cross-bar 120 on the shaft, which projects through and engages the edges of transverse slots 119. When the handle is rotated in clockwise direction, the end 127 of the tube 118 slips past the pawl 34. This movement of the handle to open the door 48 is permitted, when a coin is inserted through a slot 74 in the cover 73, Fig. 12, of a coin mechanism housing 69. The coin by any suitable mechanism allows a disc 115 and cam 114 connected thereto, which are-loosely mounted on the shaft 71, to be rotated. Failure to insert a coin prevents rotation of the disc 115 because a pawl 122, Fig. 4, pivoted at 123 thereto and controlled by a spring 124, engages in a slot 121 in the tube 118. The lowermost of two rollers 116, 117 on the disc 115, during its rotation, releases a detent 104 from a stop 107 and then moves a door operating lever 52 pivoted at 53 to the casing, the detent 104 being pivoted 'to the lever. The door 48 has a depending extension 50, pivoted at 51 to the lever 52 and a pin 55 on its lower end working in a slot 54. After a small movement of the lever 52 in opening and closing the door, the end of the extension 50 engages stops 130, on the casing and causes the door to be opened and shut quickly. The lever 52 is returned by a spring 99 attached to a lever 102 which engages a shoulder on the lever to hold it in open position. The lever 102 is disengaged by the rod 120, when the handle is again turned in a counterclockwise direction. A pin 100 on the lever 53, when the door is open or being moved, engages a pivoted arm 90 having an upstanding arm 95 with a locking projection 96 thereon, to hold this projection in engagement with the teeth of the wheel 28 thereby preventing the drum from being rotated. When the door is shut the pin 100 works in a notch 98 in the arm 90. The handle 72, Fig. 10, is attached to the shaft 71 by means of transverse spring-pressed pins 137 engaging depressions on the shaft. Should the machine be jammed, the handle will rotate independently of the shaft without causing damage. Coin-slit closing devices.-A slide 77, Fig. 12, on the cover 73 of the coin-mechanism housing has an extension 80, which is engaged by a pin 132 on the lever 52 to move the slide over the coin slot 74, when the door 48 is open. Money boxes or receivers.-The money box 48 is secured in the bottom of the housing 69 by a key lock 85, a rib on the casing, and projections 87 engaging apertures 88 in the casing. Casings.-The casing containing the drum comprises a flanged back 1, cylindrical portion 5, and a flanged front plate 41, which has glazed panels for viewing the articles. The panels are held in position by a rubber or fabric-covered ring. The back 1 has holes 10 for securing the machine to a wall, and also headed studs 8 which enter keyhole slotted lugs on the front 41. The front 41 is secured by a padlock after being given a slight rotation.
