Abstract

An electrical cable clamping tool 3 which connects two cable tails 2 without the need to strip the cable for continuity testing. The clamps comprise electrically conductive teeth 7 located in an insulated casing 4 allowing the clamp to pierce the insulating material and connect to the wire core directly. The clamping tool may comprise a fully insulated flexible ribbon connector and the casings may vary in size to facilitate various size cables.

Description

Crimping tool that connects two wire tails without stripping the wire This invention relates to a crimping tool that tests electrical continuity without stripping the wire.
When electricians install 1st fix wiring it is necessary/good practice to test that the cables have not been damaged.
However, at present it is a lengthy and tedious process due to the fact that the cables need to be stripped and prepared to connect into various connector blocks that are available to the trade. On larger sites there could be, as a typical example, up to 200 points for sockets and lighting meaning that a lot of time is needed. To overcome this problem, the present invention proposes a crimped connecter which has clamps that have electrically conductive teeth allowing the clamp to pierce the insulating material and connect to the wire core directly.
Each set of clamps has a plastic insulated casing that can hinge closed over and electrical cable and lock into place once the teeth have located securely.
The clamps may be adapted for other sizes of cable.
The clamps may be re-useable.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a pair of cable tails, connected together to create continuity.
Figure 2 shows the insulated casing and its components.
Figure 3 shows how the cable tail is to be located into casing.
Figure 4 shows the ribbon wire and soldered teeth.
In figure 1, typically of a 1st fix electrical installation, the cable tails 2 have been installed into a socket box 1 and the clamping tool 3 has been installed Figure 2 shows that the cable tail 2 will need to be cut square and inserted into the plastic casing 4 into the cable guides 5.
The insulted casing 4 top is hinged 10 and is then closed firmly onto the bottom casing by using the finger grips 9 forcing the piercing teeth 7 to penetrate through the cable insulation and making contact on the inner cable copper conductive core.
The clamp 3 is then inspected to ensure that the cable tail 2 is seated correctly and that the snap fit lock 6 is secured.
The conductive ribbon cable 8 will have some flexibility to allow the 2nd casing 4 to be connected to the 2nd cable tail 2 creating a continuity link.
The clamp may require a tool to install it onto the cable.

Claims (5)
