Description
A COVER FOR A CORDLESS POWER TOOL
This invention relates to a cover for a cordless power tool. More especially, this invention relates to a cover for a cordless power tool of a type comprising a base which contains a battery, a hand grip which upstands from the base, and an operating head which extends across the hand grip.
Cordless power tools are well known comprising a base which contains a battery, a hand grip which upstands from the base, and an operating head which extends across the hand grip. Typical of such known tools are cordless drills, cordless combi-drills and cordless impact drivers. Workers often have to operate outdoors and in wet conditions caused by rain. In order to protect the tools from the rain, the workers will typically wrap the tools in plastics film. This may cause a problem in that the tool may not be adequately wrapped. The wrapping may hamper the operation of the tool. After use in the rain, the wrapping will invariably be discarded as unwanted litter which is not good for the environment, especially since the wrapping is made of a plastics material which will not degrade.
It is an aim of the present invention to avoid or reduce the above mentioned problems.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided a cover for a cordless power tool of a type comprising a base which contains a battery, a hand grip which is formed integrally with the base and which upstands from the base, an operating head which is formed integrally with the hand grip and which extends across the hand grip at an end of the hand grip which is farthest from the base, a trigger on the hand grip, and an operating formation at one end of the operating head, and wherein the cover comprises: (i) a base portion for covering the base of the tool; (ii) a hand grip portion for covering the hand grip of the tool; (iii) a head portion for covering the operating head of the tool and (iv) a first opening which is in the cover in use of the cover and which enables the operating formation of the tool to function when the tool is in use, and wherein: (v) the cover is a water-resistant cover whereby the cover is able to provide protection for the tool against rain during use of the tool in the rain; and (vi) the cover is such that it is reieasably retainable on the tool whereby the cover is able to be provided on the tool for use of the tool in the rain and the cover is able to be removed from the tool for use of the tool not in the rain.
The cover of the present invention is advantageous in that it is easily inserted on and removed from the tool. Thus the cover can be used when required and this avoids the above mentioned problem of workers protecting their tools from the rain by using plastics film, and then discarding the plastics film after use. The cover of the present invention is also able to be formed to provide the required protection from the rain and thereby avoid the above mentioned problem of the plastics wrapping not being correctly provided around the tool. The cover is also able to be easily gripped, which thereby overcomes the problem of the plastics wrapping hindering use of the tool.
The cover may include a second opening which is in the cover in use of the cover and which enables access to the trigger on the hand grip of the tool. Direct contact of the trigger may be preferred by some workers for giving sensitivity of operation of the tool.
The cover may include first retainer means for retaining the base portion on the base of the tool.
The first retainer means may comprise strips of material comprising matracies of interlocking formations which push together to fasten and which pull apart to unfasten. Preferred such matricies of interlocking formations are hook and loop interlocking formations which are available under the Registered Trade Mark Velcro. Other constructions of interlocking formations may be employed.
The cover may include second retainer means for releasably retaining the head portion on the operating head of the tool.
The second retainer means may comprise an elastic strap. Other types of second retainer means may be employed.
The tool may include a closure flap for closing the base portion on the base of the tool. The closure means may be moved between various positions for enabling the battery of the tool to be inserted into the base of the tool from the front, underneath or any other required position.
The tool may be one in which the cover is made of a fabric which is treated with a water-resistant material. Thus, for example, the fabric may be cotton which would normally be water absorbent but which may be treated with a water-resisting material to provide the cover with the required water resistance.
Alternatively, the cover may be made of a material which is inherently water-resistant. In this case, for example, the cover may be made of a plastics material. Any suitable plastics material may be employed, for example nylon.
The cover may include at least one air vent. The air vent may advantageously promote circulation of air around the tool for example for cooling the tool during use of the tool.
Preferably, the air vent is a vertical part of the cover in use of the tool with the base of the tool lowermost. With such position of the air vent, the ingress of rain through the cover is minimised. Other positions for the air vent may be employed. The cover may be one in which there is one of the air vents or a plurality of the air vents.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a view from the front and one side of a cover on a cordless power tool; with the cover being partially open; Figure 2 is a view like Figure 1 and shows the cover closed; Figure 3 is a view from the front and one side of the cover as shown in Figure 1; Figure 4 is a view from the front and the other side of the cover as shown in Figure 1 and also shows the cover partially closed; Figure 5 is a view from the front and the other side of the cordless power tool as shown in Figure 1, and with a chuck of the tool containing a socket spanner; Figure 6 shows the cover and the tool in use, with the tool being provided with an elongated socket spanner; and Figure 7 shows the tool of Figure 1 with the chuck being provided with a screwdriver.
Referring to Figures 1 -4, there is shown a cover 2 for a cordless power tool 4. The tool 4 is of a type comprising a base 6 which contains a battery 8. The tool 4 also comprises a hand grip 10 which is formed integrally with the base 6 and which upstands from the base 6. The tool 4 further comprises an operating head 12 which is formed integrally with the hand grip 10 and which extends across the hand grip 10 at an end 14 of the hand grip 10 which is farthest from the base 6. A trigger 16 is on the hand grip 10. An operating formation 18 is at one end 20 of the operating head 12.
The cover 2 comprises a base portion 22 for receiving the base 6 of the tool 4. The cover 2 also comprises a hand grip portion 24 for covering the hand grip 10 of the tool 4. The cover 2 further comprises a head portion 26 for covering the operating head 12 of the tool 4. A first opening 28 is in the cover 2 in use of the cover 2. The first opening 28 enables the operating formation 18 of the tool 4 to function when the tool 4 is in use.
The cover 2 is a water-resistant cover whereby the cover 2 is able to provide protection for the tool 4 against rain during use of the tool 4 in the rain.
The cover 2 is such that it is releasable retainable on the tool 4 whereby the cover 2 is able to be provided on the tool 4 for use of the tool 4 in the rain, and the cover 2 is able to be removed from the tool 4 for use of the tool 4 not in the rain.
The cover 2 includes a second opening 30 which is in the cover 2 in use of the cover 2 and which enables access to the trigger 16 on the hand grip 10 of the tool 4.
The cover 2 includes first retainer means 32 for releasably retaining the base portion 22 on the base 6 of the tool 4. The first retainer means 32 comprises strips of material 34. The strips of material 34 comprises matricies of interlocking formations which push together to fasten and which pull apart to unfasten, The interlocking formations are hook and loop formations. The strips of material 34 are known by the Registered Trade Mark Velcro.
The cover 2 further includes second retainer means 36 for releasably retaining the head portion 26 on the operating head of the tool 4. The second retainer means 36 comprises an elastic strap 38. The elastic strap 38 is secured at its ends to the cover 2, for example by stitching or ultrasonic welding in dependence on the material from which the cover 2 is made.
The cover 2 includes a closure flap 40 for closing the base portion 22 on the base 6 of the tool 4. The closure flap 40 is hinged to the base portion 22 of the cover 2 by the material from which the cover 2 is made. The closure flap 40 is able to pivot to various open positions in order to provide access to the base 6 of the tool 4 and thereby enable the battery 8 to be removed from the base 6 from the front, underneath or wherever may be required by the tool 4.
The cover 2 may be made of a fabric which is treated with a water-resistant material. Such a fabric may be, for example cotton. Alternatively, the cover 2 may be made of a plastics material which is inherently water-resistant. An example of such a plastics material is nylon.
The cover 2 includes an air vent 42 for helping to enable air to circulate around the operating head 12 of the tool 4. The operating head 12 houses an electric motor and this may become hot during prolonged use of the tool 4. Thus the air vent 42 enables the electric motor to be cooled. The air vent 42 is provided in a vertical part of the cover 2 when the cover 2 is on the tool 4 and tool 4 is being used in a vertical position with its base lowermost, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. With such vertical positioning of the air vent 42, any ingress of rainwater into the cover 2 is avoided or minimised.
The cover 2 is easily fitted on and removed from the tool 4. The cover 2 can be kept in a tool box or other convenient place for use and when required. After use, the cover 2 can be removed from the tool 4 and stored for a further use as and when required. As can best be appreciated from Figure 2, the cover 2 is able to protect the tool 4 to a large degree from the rain if the tool 2 is being used in the rain.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the base portion 22, the hand grip portion 24 and the head portion 26 may be of other shapes than those shown. Other types of first retainer means 32 and second retainer means 36 may be employed. The first and the second openings 28, 30 may be such that they are always in the cover 2, or only in the cover 2 when the cover 2 is in an operative condition on the tool 4. More than one air vent 42 may be employed. Individual components shown in the drawings are not limited to use in their drawings and they may be used in other drawings and in all aspects of the invention. The invention also extends to the individual components mentioned and/or shown above, taken singly or in any combination.
