Abstract

A vehicle or trailer roof top tent comprising solid or rigid panels that slot together without the need for an internal or external supporting framework, that is capable for being disassembled by folding or sliding such that it can be easily stowed. Preferably a free-moving cross beam (10, fig 2) spans and supports the floor panel. Preferably the panels are hinged at different heights to enable them to be stowed in a flat arrangement. The panels may be insulated. The panels may comprise windows that may be hinged to allow them to open. The base may be secured by means of poles (25, fig 9) or long sliders 19, 20 attached to the trailer of vehicle.

Description

THE ROOF TOP TENT ( RTT)
FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to a solid panel roof top tent for camping and exploring wild wet or hot places. A solid panel tent results in greater strength and security, with no cloth stitching or zips to go wrong The RTT can be attached to a vehicle roof or adventure trailer.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
With conventional RTTs they have canvas sides, front and roof with only a hard top for packing away and secure stowage, referred to as a hard shell RTT. The canvas sections hang over an internal or from external frame giving shape to the tent, the three canvas sides and roof usually have clear polyethylene windows, stitched in to the canvas, flaps over windows and doors are held in shape with sprung wires, doors have zipped entrances that may also have flaps for rain and sun shielding.
The conventional method suffers from the disadvantages of its very own materials, zips get easily snagged or broken, and stitching wears fades or comes undone, windows discolour or crease in the sun, when wet they can absorb water become damp creating mould and mildew, in cold climates when stored away wet it can freeze shut, also very noisy in high winds due to canvas flapping.
The conventional method requires the outer base to be folded up into the base footprint prior to closing down the hard top, this usually requires the canvas to be stuffed into and under the hardtop in order to close. External wires for holding flaps removed.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the present invention to overcome at least one of the aforementioned disadvantages.
SUMMERY OF THE INVENTION
To overcome these aforementioned problems the present invention proposes there is provided a Roof top tent ( RTT) comprising of solid panels on all sides including the roof, solid panels are slotted or hinged together therefore the tent requires no internal or external frames, canvas, zips or stitching at all. The windows are solid acrylic that open and close on a living hinge system. Panel slots are derived from profile excursions shaped for purpose.
Due to foam composite panels this RTT has a certain u value ( r value) keeping interior cooler in summer and warmer in winter, interiors can be blackened out for daytime sleeping. The entire RTT is easier to clean than canvas as it can be disinfected power washed inside and out without harm to materials.
This RTT folds into itself by means of separate panels being placed onto a cross beam spanning the two sides this allows the system to work by storing the removable panels on top of beam whilst at same time allows outer base panel to slide underneath beam for stowing away. When tent is erected this beam becomes a table or shelf thus serving two purposes. The other side panels fold down on hinges keeping everything nice and flat inside the outer case.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which; Figure 1 shows the side view shape of the RTT depicting panel and window features, Figure 2 Shows base and panel layers, how they look when folded away, Figure 3 Shows Roof panels, how they stow into the exterior roof panel, Figure 4 Shows Roof panels and stowage, Figure 5 Shows the cross beam member, and its place within the folding layers, Figure 6 Shows side view of exterior side case with base sliders, Figure 7 Shows front view of RTT showing door and window openings, along with roof panels, Figure 8 Shows profile excursions required for this innovation, Figure 9 Shows RTT deployed on a trailer, Figure 10 Shows side elevation of RTT, Figure 11 Shows base and panel layers, In fig 1 Shows the shape or the RTT with its various Panels, the 3a panel forms part of the exterior case which the other panels fold into, panel 4 forms the exterior roof panel as well as the closing lid when folded onto 3a,3b In fig 2 allows you to see how panels are stored internally in the RTT a key feature is panel 10 fig 5 this allows this system to work, free moving crossbeam 10 spans the tent locking in to place on profiles 11,12 fig 5,8, This results in a strong cross beam platform allowing panels to be stacked on top of or freely slide under cross beam.
Panels 8a,8b fig 2 are unhinged free panels that lay flat upon the cross beam 10 to facilitate packing of panels when closed, Panels 7a,7b fig 1,2 fold down on hinges stacking neatly on top of panels 8a,8b while being supported by cross beam 10, Instrumental in keeping the panels stacked neatly in horizontal fashion are profiles 11,12, fig 8 with one side hinged higher than the other this allows panels to overlap fig 2, 5, these profiles are also guiding rails for base panel 2 that's hinged with front panel 9 to facilitate sliding through 11,12 fig 2,5 The RTT base fig 6 has sliders on the bottom, they consist of the slider housing 19 and the slider 20 they can perform a few tasks, when slider 20 is pulled out it forms the structure to hold the outer base panel 2 it is then held in place by fixings to panel 1 fig 2 Poles are required to prop up the outer base panel whether from the ground to slider 20 fig 9 or from slider 20 to side of trailer or vehicle at a 45 degree angle 24 fig 9. The later makes RTT free standing from the ground and can be moved, In addition access is granted with a ladder going from ground to base panel in the usual RTT fashion. Fig 9 Longer sliders 20 can be used through the housing 19 in order to suspend RTT from the garage rafters or other suitable places.
Deployment of RTT requires a few simple steps, first pull out the sliders 20 which you can either lock in place with the 45 angle method onto vehicle, then pull out outer base 2, lock into place with panel 1 and use poles 25, with ladders 26 securely fixed to base 2, climb up onto secure platform.
Lift up roof panel 4 securing it in place with the struts 24 fig 4, this allows you to lift up roof panels 5 & 6 panel 5 being hinged to 4, fig 4, in turn swing into place hinged panels 7a & 7b fastening them to panel 4, Lift up front door panel 9 fig 1, take free panels 8a & 8b secure them in there respectful profile slots 14 & 15 fig 1,2 the hinged door panel will secure panels in place as it slots them into its profile 14 housings, this secures the three walls together. The roof panels fold down onto the side panels and into their profile 14 slots they can also be fastened or tied down in extreme winds making a secure RTT for all seasons.

Claims (9)

  1. CLAIMS1 A Roof top tent comprising of a solid panel structure needing no internal or external framework to hold structure in shape, a solid panel structure that allows for panels of various shapes to slide and fold into itself for stowage. Strength comes from its own box like construction hinged or unhinged panels slot into place using different profiles to allow this method of construction thus creating a water tight solid dwelling, requiring no cloth, stitching or zips.
