Description

PATENT APPLICATION OF
RYAN MATTHEW LEE
FOR
WIPING PAD FOR THE THIGH WITH REMOVABLE WIPING CLOTHS
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a pad which is worn on the thigh of the leg to wipe excess caulk, adhesives or silicone sealants which are 'substances' from sealant guns, fingers and hands or tools during work.
Background
The use of caulk, adhesives and silicone sealants which are referred to as 'substances' in this patent document is common worldwide and they provide a way for a decorator, builder, joiner or DIY user to fill unwanted gaps around the edges of doorframes, windows, skirting boards etc; as well as to seal areas where moisture or water could enter such as a bathroom or shower.
The substances are provided in a plastic tube in the known way, which has a plastic nozzle to one end from which the substance is driven out of the tube by a sprung loaded plunger provided by the gun.
During its use the substance has to be finished using a tool to create a straight and even line or by way of a finger digit being 'passed' over the filled line or 'bead' of substance, this results in the caulk or silicone being transferred onto said tool or finger, which is often a problem. The user will often try to wipe the substance from their finger, hand or tool onto a cloth or a piece of plastic bag, which is very messy and difficult, particularly when silicone is being used.
Following use of the gun, the user also needs to retract the sprung plunger of the gun to prevent further substance exiting from the nozzle end and also has to wipe the nozzle clean to remove excess caulk, adhesive or silicone from it. This again usually comes in the form of a cloth or plastic bag and results in mess and wasted time dealing with the issue, as well as the cloths and bags being strewn around the workplace creating a sticky hazard.
The cloth or bag becomes hard to use after just a small number of wipes, as it has to be handled by the user with their other clean hand which also becomes covered in the substance, creating an even larger problem and time consuming irritation to each working day.
Some wiping methods of caulk, adhesive and silicone nozzles on guns have therefore been cited in the prior art as follows: This is shown in patent GB2463528 (HEBDEN) discloses a wipe pad 9 which comprises two layers of foam material with straps 10, 11 secured between the two layers with adhesive. Two or more straps 12 are secured to the outer surface of the upper foam layer, the surface of the two said straps having small hooks which will allow for the releasable attachment of cloth wipes. The pad 9 may, in use, be secured to the forearm of the user, and held in position by straps 10, 11.
Patent US20130134182 (BROSCHE) discloses an apparatus for removing caulk from a user's finger(s) and tool(s) (i.e., a caulk finger wiping apparatus) is disclosed. The apparatus is used in combination with a disposable tube-style caulk cartridge and in conjunction with any one of multiple styles of caulking guns. The apparatus includes an upper edge that may have finger receiving notches for removing caulk from a user's finger(s) and tool(s), and an apparatus component for collecting the removed caulk. Methods of making and using the apparatus for removing caulk from a user's finger(s) and tool(s) are also disclosed.
Patent US20190224711 (DEMERIS) discloses a caulk wiping attachment for a caulk gun which includes a tube having at least one open end for providing a circular wiping edge. The tube can be attached directly to a barrel of the caulk gun or to a disposable caulk cartridge installed into the barrel of the caulk gun. The tube can be cylindrical with an annular cross section. The tube can be attached to the caulk cartridge using a sleeve slipped over the caulk cartridge, the tube being attached to an outside of the sleeve. A disposable liner or cup can be held within the tube.
Patent U520040144804 (BORISCH) discloses a cleaning material dispenser which includes a retention tube, a tube support end cap, a cover end cap and a material roll. The tube support end cap is attached to one end of the retention tube and the cover end cap is attachable to the other end thereof A material slot is formed through the retention tube to receive an end of the material roll. In a second and third embodiment, a container base and a container end cap are used to retain the material roll. In a fourth embodiment, a dispenser is used to retain a plurality of sheets. The cleaning material dispensers may be attached to a user's clothing with an attachment clip. The cleaning material dispensers may be attached to a caulking gun with an attachment device. The cleaning material dispenser may also be formed as an integral part of a caulking gun.
Patent US6067683 (REEVES) discloses an apparatus for use with a conventional caulking gun for enabling a user to clean caulk from the user's finger or fingers includes an open-topped receptacle defining an upper edge and a finger-receiving cut-out portion defined within the edge. Clips are connected to the receptacle for cooperating with the caulking gun and removably holding the apparatus in fixed position with respect to the gun so that the user can wipe his finger or fingers across the edge within the cut-out portion to remove caulk from the user's finger and to neatly collect the removed caulk within the receptacle.
The prior art therefore shows that there is a need for a more effective way of wiping excess caulk, adhesive or silicone substances from a user's gun; tool; finger or hand which provides a surface which is easily accessible and prevents messy use and eliminates the problem of cloths and bags strewn around the work place.
The present invention aims to provide a pad which is attached to the user's thigh on the upper leg and has a multiple of cloth or plastic wipes which can be removed and disposed of after each use, presenting a fresh wipe under it for the next use.
Summary of the invention
According to the present invention there is provided a wiping pad which is worn on the thigh of the leg and has removable cloths of material or polyethylene plastic sheets which can be stuck to the pads surface for wiping excess caulk, adhesive and silicone substances from gun nozzles, fingers and hands during trade or DIY work.
A typical embodiment of the wiping pad is provided as a wiping pad body which is derived of one or more layers of material forming an oviform 'tear drop' shaped garment having flat front and rear surfaces which are mainly planar.
The wiping pad body is shaped as described in an oviform tear drop shape to provide comfortable wearing on the front of the thigh on the leg, as the rounded shape remains comfortable when the wearer is crouching, kneeling or standing as they work throughout the day. They pad body is a cotton or synthetic based material with at least two layers of shaped surfaces adjoined to form a thickness, this may also be enhanced by a foam or other suitable insert inside the main area of the pad body, the main body being the larger attachment area 7 onto which wiping cloths 3 are removably attached The larger attachment area may be oval as shown or specifically shaped as shown in Figures 3 and 11 and has a surface which enables wiping cloths to adhere to it. The larger attachment area has a sticky or tacky surface throughout its whole area and shape, which corresponds exactly with the size and shape of the wiping cloth which is being attached to it. The sticky surface is provided using an adhesive which is coating the larger attachment area and to which any cloth type will adhere to once both come into contact with each other. The sticky surface may be permanent or be replaceable after a period of time, by being renewed using a replaceable sticky surface sheet 25 as shown in Figure 8. This replaceable sticky sheet would be required should the surface lose its tackiness over long periods of removable and replacement of the wiping cloths thereto. It would have two hook and eye strips or an adhesive peel off surface to its rear, to be attached or peeled off and then stuck directly onto the larger attachment area to receive said wiping cloths to its frontal surface.
Said wiping cloths may also be attached by way of at least two strips of hook and eye, also commercially known as Velcro (TRADE MARK). The hook and eye strips are permanently adhered to the larger attachment area and the wiping cloths, which in this embodiment would have a slightly rough or textured surface; as found in cloth materials such as microfiber cloths, cotton or fleeced cloths and lose looped nylon sheets, all stick to said hook and eye strips.
These cloths can therefore be easily removed and re-stuck onto the wiping pad body's front area for replacement after use. This provides an alternative to the aforementioned sticky and tacky surface of said wiping pad body to its larger attachment area. The basis of both the hook and eye and sticky surface methods are to enable cloths to be attached and removed after use to be then replaced by a further unused cloth, to be re-used and so on.
To the top of the wiping pad body is the neck, this portion is an elongated and optionally elasticated area which can fold over the trouser belt of the wearer and clip together once it is fully looped around said belt, as shown in the accompanying Figures. Attachment means for this neck once around the belt include hook and eye pads and press studs as shown. Once the neck is attached around the belt the main wiping pad body hangs down onto the frontal thigh of the wearers leg with its naturally formed oviform shape allowing free movement of the leg and body. To the rear side of the wiping pad body is an optional anti-slip patch, which is made of a suede or gripping rubber type of surface to prevent the slipping movement of the wiping pad on the front of the thigh during use and to help maintain its position on the leg front.
In a further embodiment of the belt attachment a carabiner hook may be used to attach the wiping pad to the trouser belt or the belt loop. The carabiner hook is attached to an elasticated band, as shown in Figures 7 and 11. The elasticated band is sewn into the neck and the carabiner hook is hooked through its looped end with is sewn around the base curve of the carabiner hook, as shown, Once the carabiner hook is hooked onto the trouser belt it remains in place when the hooks catch is closed and the elasticated band stretches to allow for the bodily movement when the wearer is working, providing a comfort fitting which adjusts slightly to the leg and thigh position during kneeling, crouching and standing variants. If the user is not wearing a belt the carabiner hook is attached through the belt loop on the trouser waist band, as shown in Figure 6.
To each side of the wiping pad body are attached elasticated leg straps, which are horizontally wrapped around the mid-thigh of the leg and adjusted to the correct tightness that is comfortable for the user. The leg straps are of a suitable material to provide comfortable wearing around the leg during use and also provide a slight stretch or elasticity for expansion when the thigh increases in size and changes shape when the person crouches or kneels when working. Once wrapped around the thigh of the leg, the two separate straps meet behind the leg and are secured together by means of hook and eye pads, press studs or a small buckle and belt with buckle eye holes, as an alternative. These leg straps are adjusted by the wearer to ensure comfort of use when working and in conjunction with the neck attachment to the trouser belt, using the aforementioned methods. When the wearer is using said substances, for example; a silicone sealant gun to seal cracks or gaps or fill areas during building or DIY work, they may need to wipe their finger or hands and/or the nozzle of said sealant gun onto the aforementioned wiping cloth, until the excess substance has been removed, this will continue until the wiping cloth has too much substance on its surface and no more area on the cloths surface exists for further substance to be wiped on the cloth.
At this point the wiping cloth is pulled away from the sticky surface or from the hook and eye strips of the further embodiment and disposed of.
A fresh and unused wiping cloth or plastic sheet is then attached to the pad onto the hook and eye strips or in the other embodiment onto the sticky surface area, to remain in place and in preparation for the wiping of said nozzle and/or fingers and hands. This process is repeated many times during each day with unused wiping pads being kept in the user's pockets or tool bag.
