Abstract
A backup ring assembly has a plurality of radially offset ring members including an outermost ring member formed from plurality of axially extending segments. Each of the plurality of axially extending segments includes an outer surface. A first interlock member support is coupled to the outer surface of one of the plurality of axially extending segments of the outer most ring member. A second interlock member support is coupled to the outer surface of an another one of the plurality of axially extending segments of the outermost ring member. An interlock member includes a first end supported at the first interlock member support and a second end supported at the second interlock member support. The interlock member restrains radially outward expansion of the ring and circumferential expansion of a gap extending between the one of the axially extending segments and the another one of the axially extending segments.
Claims (7)
1. A backup ring assembly (600) comprising: a base ring (100, 343); a plurality of ring members (602, 604 and 606) extending from the base ring (100, 343) wherein at least a radially inwardly most ring member (602) of the plurality of ring members (602, 604 and 606) includes a depending terminal flare section (608) that transitions from a more axially extending direction to a more radially extending direction.
2. The backup ring assembly (600) as claimed in claim 1 wherein two of the plurality of ring members (602, 604, 608) include flare sections (608, 610) that transitions from a more axially extending direction to a more radially extending direction.
3. The backup ring assembly (600) as claimed in claim 1 wherein an outermost (606) of the plurality of ring members includes a plurality of axially extending segments.
4. The backup ring assembly (600) as claimed in claim 1 wherein the flare (608, 610) transitions by >0 to 90 degrees over its axial length.
5. The backup ring assembly (600) as claimed in claim 2 wherein the two flare sections (608, 610) parallel one another as they extend.
6. The backup ring assembly (600) as claimed in claim 1 wherein the radially inwardly most ring member (602) is circumferentially continuous.
7. A backup ring assembly (600) comprising: a base ring (100, 343); a plurality of ring members (602, 604 and 606) extending from the base ring (100, 343) wherein at least one ring member of the plurality of ring members (602, 604 and 606) is circumferentially continuous and at least one other ring member is segmented.
