Abstract

A removable ladder stand 1, comprising a deformable material with a slot 10 which retains the stand on the rung of a ladder. There may also be a through hole 12 which may be located along the centre line of the stand. The stand may have a fastener 20, to close the slot, which may be a hook 22 and loop 24 fastener. The stand may also have a cover 2, which may be waterproof and may have a handle. The deformable material may be a foam or recycled foam. The cover may have an alignment aid which may be a mark or text to align the stand on the ladder. A method of forming the stand is also disclosed whereby deformable material is cut to form a slot.

DIY TOOL
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present disclosure relates to a DIY tool. Particularly, but not exclusively, the disclosure relates to a removable ladder stand. Aspects of the invention relate to a removable ladder stand and to a method of manufacturing a removable ladder stand.
BACKGROUND
When working on roofs builders, roofers, renderers, or Do It Yourself (DIY) enthusiasts (the users) carry out repairs, lead work, cement work and general maintenance they must have access to the roof. The users usually access the roof by ladder or a combination of a scaffolding platform and ladder.
A ladder with a stand-off may be employed by the user to brace the ladder on the roof. Systems with a stand-off have one or two bearing surfaces that are flat plates or feet. The plates in ladder stand-offs may be liable for breaking roof tiles. Breaking roof tiles when carrying out maintenance or repair work is a frustrating situation for the user as the tiles must be replaced. This problem is particularly frustrating when the hard to reach tiles (or tiles that have been cut to fit) are the ones which break. Moreover, there is added cost in terms of waste material and time spent repairing the newly broken tiles resulted from using a stand-off ladder.
To get around this issue a known method to finish the finer details of a re-roof job or repairs is to run a ladder from a scaffolding platform up parallel with the newly laid tiles to gain access to where the user needs it to be. This method often leads to the ladder, which is now leaning on roof tiles, breaking those very roof tiles. This results in further work, wasted time, and frustration.
The current practice to solve this problem is to attempt to place something in between the top of the ladder and the roof tiles to protect the roof covering. Some of the items that are commonly used include some roof insulation, a jumper or other pieces of clothing, a length of wood to try and spread the weight or even sofa cushions. Such practices are inherently dangerous as the items are not fixedly attached to the ladder and are liable to slip when the user moves their weight. Not only may this result in the tiles becoming broken, it also may result in serious injury to the user if the ladder slips off the item.
The present invention aims to overcome the deficiencies of the prior art and provide a solution to a long felt want.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Aspects and embodiments of the invention provide a removable ladder stand and a method of manufacturing a removable ladder stand.
According to a first aspect of the invention a removable ladder stand is disclosed. The removable ladder stand comprises: a deformable material with a slot. The slot is adapted for retaining the removable ladder stand on a rung of a ladder.
The removable ladder stand advantageously may be attached and unattached to any ladder rung. Advantageously, the ladder stand may be taken off the ladder rung and stored when not in use. The user may as a result only fix the removable ladder stand to a ladder when they want to use, the rest of the time the user may use the ladder as a regular ladder. In this instance a "regular ladder" is one without the removable ladder stand attached.
In situations where the user wishes to lay a long ladder up a roof the user may use two or more removable ladder stands along the length of the ladder. The user can therefore reduce the potential of ladders sagging in the middle and touching roof tiles. This may be a greater issue in long ladders used on high roofs. Moreover, the second, third, fourth, etc, removable ladder stand can be used to further spread the weight of the ladder and user and further reduce the likelihood of tiles cracking.
The removable ladder stand may be retrofitted to any ladder rung. 5 Advantageously, the removable ladder stand may be sized to fit on any ladder.
The deformable material when pressed onto a surface deforms spreading the weight of the ladder and the user of said ladder across the roof surface. A more even weight distribution reduces the likelihood of roof tiles cracking under the pressure of the ladder and the user.
Advantageously, the deformable material deforms to the shape of the roof itself. The deformable material deforms around the shape of tiles or other roof fixtures or fittings reducing the likelihood of damage to the roof itself.
The removable ladder stand, whilst being invented in mind of tiled roofs can be used with any roof. For example, a membrane roof. The deformable material of the removable ladder stand will spread the user and ladders weight across the membrane reducing the likelihood of damage to the roof membrane. The same is true for zinc, corrugated, lead, or other roofs.
The slot being made of a deformable material advantageously means that the slot deforms to the shape of the ladder rung it is attached to.
The deformable material further comprises a through hole connected to the slot wherein the through hole is adapted for retaining the removable ladder stand on a rung of a ladder.
The deformable material defining the through hole is made up of the deformable material. Beneficially this means that the through hole can deform to the shape of the ladder rung to enable a more secure fit.
The slot runs the length of the through hole and is connected along the length of the through hole. The slot is adapted suitably for allowing the rung of a ladder to pass through the slot into the hole.
The through hole runs through the deformable material from one end to the other.
Advantageously the through hole allows the removable ladder stand to rotate around the through hole. The through hole allows the removable ladder stand to rotate along a roof and roof tiles further reducing the likelihood of damage to tiles occurring. The deformable material acts in combination to deform over any tiles, fixtures or fittings on the roof as the ladder stand rolls.
The through hole is disposed along a centre line of the removable ladder stand. Advantageously, the location of the through hole along the centreline of the removable ladder stand allows the removable ladder stands to be used in a various number of angles when attached to a ladder rung.
Preferably the removable ladder stand further comprises a fastener, wherein the fastener is adapted to close the slot.
The fastener helps to close the slot and fix the removable ladder stand onto a ladder rung. Closing the slot reduces the chance that the rung can slip out of the through hole and back out of the slot.
The fastener is a hook and loop fastener. For example, the fastener may be Velcro (TM). Alternatively, the fastener may be at least one: toggle and loop; buckle; press studs; a zip; hook and eye; frog fastener; D-ring; snap hook; clasp; buttons; squeeze buckle; G-hook; cam buckle; ratchet buckle; roller buckle; snap buckle; tie buckle or alternative fastening arrangement.
The fastener further comprises a flap and a fastener panel. The flap is connected to the deformable material on one side of the slot and the fastener panel is connected to the deformable material on the other side of the slot. The flap is arranged such that it extends across the slot suitably for covering the fastener panel in an engaged position.
The flap can be used to pull the slot closed and secure the slot in the closed and fastened position.
The hooks of the hook and loop fastener are located on the flap and the loops are located on the fastener panel. Alternatively, the hooks may be located on the fastener panel and the loops may be on the flap.
The deformable material further comprises a cover. Advantageously the cover prevents the deformable material from touching the roof surface which may damage the deformable material.
The cover is waterproof. Beneficially providing a waterproof cover reduces the likelihood of the deformable material soaking up water when in use. If the material soaks up water it may become heavier and less easy to be handled. The waterproof material may be a nylon fabric or may be a canvas fabric, or a cloth fabric, or a polymer fabric, or a polyeurethane fabric, waxed cotton, rubber, or any other suitable material. Preferably the tear resistant material is a GOOD Oxford nylon fabric.
The cover is made of a tear resistant material. Beneficially the tear resistant material will reduce the likelihood of the removable ladder stand deformable material becoming exposed to the elements. Moreover, the tear resistant material may increase the longevity of the removable leather stand.
The tear resistant material is a polymer fabric; preferably the polymer fabric is a nylon fabric.
The tear resistant material is a nylon fabric or may be a canvas fabric, or a cloth fabric, or a polymer fabric, or a polyeurethane fabric, waxed cotton, rubber, or any other suitable material. Preferably the tear resistant material is a GOOD Oxford nylon fabric.
The cover may further comprise a carry handle suitable for carrying the removable ladder stand. Advantageously, the carry handle can be used by the user to move the removable understand quickly and easily.
The cover further comprises at least one non-slip surface. The non-slip surface maybe a pattern made up of a non-slip material. For example, the pattern may be dots, chevron's, diamonds, or any other repeating pattern of geometric shapes.
The at least one non-slip surface is rubber or PVC.
The deformable material is a foam. The foam may have an open or closed cell structure. The foam may be made of a polyeurethane material or a blend of different foam materials. Preferably the foam has a density of 80 to 170 kg/m3, more preferably the density is 100 to 140 kg/m3, more preferably still the density is 120 kg/m3.
The foam is a recycled foam. For example, the recycled foam may be off cuts from manufacturing other foam-based products. The foam may be a reconstituted foam or a chip foam.
The deformable material is substantially "C" shaped. Beneficially, the C shaped 20 design permits the easy fixing and removing of the removable ladder stand onto a ladder rung.
The cover further comprises an alignment aid suitable for aiding the user to align the removable ladder stand. Advantageously the alignment aid helps the user align the removable ladder stand on the ladder. Ideally the user wants the slot to not be perpendicular to the roof when the removable ladder stand attached to the ladder is placed on the roof. The alignment aid is used by the user to rotate or otherwise turn or adjust the removable ladder stand such that the removable ladder stand is positioned correctly.
The alignment aid is a visual aid, preferably the visual aid is a mark or patch or text or logo. When setting up the ladder with attached removable ladder stand if the user can see the visual aid from the bottom of the ladder then the removable ladder stand is positioned correctly.
The alignment aid is disposed on the cover such that the alignment aid is located 90 to 270 degrees circumferentially from the opening of the slot; preferably wherein the alignment aid is located 135 to 225 degrees circumferentially from the opening of the slot; more preferably wherein the alignment aid is located 180 degrees circumferentially from the opening of the slot.
In a second aspect of the invention a method of forming a removable ladder stand is provided. The method, including the step of providing: a deformable material; and the further steps of: coring a through hole through the deformable material; cutting the deformable material to form a slot connected to the through hole.
Preferably the slot is connected to the through hole.
and wherein the through hole is adapted for retaining the removable ladder stand on a rung of a ladder.
Preferably further including the step of providing a cover to cover the deformable material. The cover may be provided as a template of fabric which is folded around the deformable material.
Preferably further including the step of providing fastener connected to the deformable material.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The removable ladder stand 1 will be described with reference to the Figures 15. The removable ladder stand comprises of a deformable material 30 with a slot 10 and a through hole 12.
The deformable material 30 is substantially C-shaped or maybe cylindrical. Alternatively, other shapes may be employed for example cuboid, cube, spherical.
The deformable material 30 maybe a foam, for example a recycled foam or a reconstituted foam or chip foam. Using a recycled foam has benefits the environment as other off cuts of foam from other foam products (such as sofa cushions) may be used in the present invention. The foam may be a polyurethane foam.
Preferably the density of the foam is such that the foam deforms under the weight of the ladder and user but not too little (or conversely too much) that it does not give the required deformation when placed on a roof. Preferably the foam has a density of 80 to 170 kg/m3, more preferably the density is 100 to 140 kg/m3, more preferably still the density is 120 kg/m3. The foam may be an open or closed foam.
The deformable material 30 is located within a cover 2. The cover 2 is complementary to the shape of the deformable material 30. In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 -5 the cover 2 is a complementary c-shaped cover. In alternative embodiments no cover 2 may be provided. The cover 2, where provided, aids in preventing damage to the deformable material 30. For example, by preventing the deformable material 30 catching on a roof tile.
As shown in Figure 1, the cover 2 has a first side panel 4, a second side panel 6, and a body panel 8. The deformable material 30 is removably located within the cover 2. The deformable material 30 can be removed from the cover 2 by opening zip 14 that connects side panel 6 and body panel 8. The zip being partially open and side panel 6 being partially opened as shown in Figure 3. The deformable material 30 is shown in Figure 3 through the open side panel 6. In alternative embodiments the zip may not be present and the cover 2 may be a sealed unit, for example it may be sewn shut. Alternatively, the zip may be replaced by buttons or press-fit studs.
The through hole 12 is located through with the deformable material 30. Similarly, the cover 2 is complementary to the shape of the through hole 12.
The through hole 12 is located substantially along the centre line of the removable ladder stand 1. Locating the through hole 12 along the centreline of the removable ladder stand 1 allows for the removable ladder stand to be retained in a number of different positions. in alternative embodiments the through hole may be located offset from the centre line of the removal ladder stand 1.
The through hole 12 is substantially circular in cross-section. A circular cross-section may fit a wide range of ladder rungs in a variety of orientations. However, the through hole may be any shape in cross-section, for example rectangular or hexagonal. Alternatively, the through hole 12 may be complementary to a specific ladder rung shape.
The slot 10 connects the through hole 12 to the outer surface of the deformable material 30. The slot 10 is a discontinuity in the shape of the deformable material 30. The slot 10 is adapted to receive a rung of a ladder and allow the user to push the removable ladder stand 1 onto the rung of the ladder receiving the rung of the ladder in the through hole 12.
In some embodiments no through hole 12 is provided. Instead the slot 10 may be used to retain the removable ladder stand 1 on the rung of a ladder.
The cover 2 covers both sides of the slot 10 as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The cover 2 is made of a flexible material. For example, the flexible material may be Nylon. Preferably the tear resistant material is a 600D Oxford nylon fabric. Alternatively, the flexible material may be a canvas fabric, or a cloth fabric, or a polymer fabric, or a polyeurethane fabric, waxed cotton, rubber, or any other suitable material.
The flexible material may be waterproof (or water resistant or splash proof). For example, the flexible material may be Nylon. Preferably the waterproof material is a 600D Oxford nylon fabric. Alternatively, the flexible material may be a canvas fabric, or a cloth fabric, or a polymer fabric, or a polyeurethane fabric, waxed cotton, rubber, or any other suitable material.
The flexible material may be non-slip. The flexible material may have at least one non-slip surface integral to or fixed on the flexible material. The non-slip surface may be a pattern, for example a series of dots of a non-slip material. The non-slip material may be rubber or polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
The removable ladder stand 1 may further comprise a carry handle 50. The carry handle 50 not shown in the Figures may be used by the user to carry the removable ladder stand 1 between jobs and sites easily.
The removable ladder stand 1 further comprises a fastener 20. The fastener in the embodiment shown in Figure 1 is a hook and loop (Velcro TM) type fastener. The fastener 20 comprises hooks 22 and loops 24. The hooks are located on a flap 26 attached to the cover 2 on one side of the slot 10. The loops 24 are attached to the cover 2 at a fastener panel 28 on the other side of the slot 10. In use the flap 26 may be moved to engage the fastener panel 28 across the slot 10 fastening the hooks 22 and loops 24 together. The fastener 20 is used to close the slot 10 and assists in preventing the removable ladder stand 1 from falling off the rung of a ladder it may be attached to.
Alternatively, the fastener 20 may be at least one: toggle and loop; buckle; press studs; a zip; hook and eye; frog fastener; D-ring; snap hook; clasp; buttons; squeeze buckle; G-hook; cam buckle; ratchet buckle; roller buckle; snap buckle; tie buckle or alternative fastening arrangement. In such an embodiment the removable ladder stand 1 may be provided with one or more fasteners 20, for example 2, 3, 4 or 5. Alternatively the number may be 1 to 5, 1 to 4, or 1 to 3.
The removable ladder stand 1 is sized to fit on a ladder rung. The removable ladder stand 1 may be sized to fit a ladder manufactured to UK, EU, US, and/or International ladder design standards. For example, the BS EN 131 standard.
Preferably the removable ladder stand 1 may be 20-50 cm in diameter and may have a longest length of 10 -28 cm. The hole 12 may be 2-10 cm in diameter.
The removable ladder stand 1 further comprises an alignment aid 40 disposed on the cover 2 as shown in Figures 1 and 3. The alignment aid 40 is used when is placing a ladder with attached removable ladder stand 1 on a roof to ensure the removable ladder stand 1 is correctly positioned.
The alignment aid 40 is positioned substantially opposite an opening 16 of the slot 10. The alignment aid 40 may be located 90 to 270 degrees circumferentially from the opening 16 of the slot 10; preferably wherein the alignment aid 40 is located 135 to 225 degrees circumferentially from the opening 16 of the slot 10; more preferably wherein the alignment aid 40 is located 180 degrees circumferentially from the opening 16 of the slot 10.
The alignment aid 40 in the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 3 is a visual aid 42. Preferably the visual aid 42 is a mark or patch or text or logo. The visual aid 42 may be brightly coloured to aid the user seeing it.
In use the visual aid 40 is used by the user to align the removable ladder stand 1 on a ladder placed on the roof of a building prior to the user stepping onto the ladder. Before stepping on the ladder the user may check that they can see the visual aid 42. If the visual aid 42 is not visible the user may turn the removable ladder stand 1 such that the visual aid 42 is visible to the user facing the removable ladder stand 1 from the bottom of the ladder. For example, by lifting the ladder and rolling the removable ladder stand 1 until the visual aid 42 is visible as shown in Figure 1.
A method of manufacturing the removable ladder stand 1 will now be described.
A deformable material 30 is provided. The deformable material is preferably a foam as described above. Preferably the foam is a cylinder. Alternatively, the foam may be another 3D geometry, such as a cube or cuboid or sphere.
If pre-cut foam is not available, then the first step of the method may be to cut an appropriate shape from foam stock. For example, cutting a cylinder of foam from a foam block using a knife or saw or hot knife or hot wire or other appropriate method.
The deformable material 30 is then cored through the middle using a coring tool. The coring tool removes material from the deformable material to form the through hole 12. The through hole 12 is approximately concentric with the centreline of the deformable material 30, for example in a cylindrical material along the z-axis in a cylindrical co-ordinate system along the length of the cylinder.
The material cored to make the through hole 12 may then be recycled. For example, the deformable material 30 removed to make the through hole 12 may be put back into the manufacturing stream to make a further block of deformable material 30. For example, a reconstituted foam block or a recycled foam block.
In embodiments where no through hole 12 is provided then a through hole 12 is not cored from the deformable material 30.
A knife of other cutting tool is then used to cut the slot 10 along the length of the cored cylinder of deformable material 30. The slot 10 is cut such that it is connected to the through hole 12 and that it connects the through hole 12 to the outside of the cylinder of deformable material 30.
The cylinder of deformable material 30 is now substantially C-shaped with the slot 10 being the gaps between the arms of the "C".
Subsequently a cover 2 is provided to cover the deformable material 30. The 5 cover 2 is complementary to the shape of the cut and shaped deformable material 30.
The cover 2 is made of a flexible fabric. The cover 2 may be made from a sheet of the flexible fabric the cut and sewn or glued or welded into a shape complementary to the deformable material 30.
The cover 2 is substantially C-shaped and has a body panel 8 and a first and second side panel 4, 6. The first side panel 4 is attached to the body panel 8 at a first end of the body panel 8. The second side panel 6 is removably attached or partially attached to the body panel 8 to allow access to the internal volume of the cover 2 suitably for sliding the deformable material 30 therein. The second side panel 6 may be partially fixed to the body panel 8, for example by gluing or sewing leaving the rest of the second side panel 6 able to be opened and closed when actuating the zip 14 The deformable material 30 is then slid into the cover 2. The zip 14 is then closed forming the removable ladder stand 1.
Alternatively, the method of forming a removable ladder stand 1 may further comprise the step of providing a fastener 20 connected to the deformable material 30. For example, as in the embodiment shown in Figure 4 and 5 the fastener 20 is located on the cover 2. The fastener 20 may be any of the fasteners 20 described above.
Preferably the fastener is a hook and loop type fastener (for example Velcro TM).
In such an embodiment the method further comprises the steps of: - providing a flap 26 on the cover 2; - providing hooks 22 on the flap 26; - providing a fastener panel on the cover 2; -providing loops 24 on the panel 28.
The hooks 22 and loops 24 may be provided as sheets that are cut and sewn onto the cover 2.
Alternative embodiments using alternative fasteners 20 may be attached using methods known within the art to enable closing of the slot 10.

Claims (25)

  1. CLAIMS1. A removable ladder stand (1) comprising: a deformable material (30) with a slot (10); and wherein the slot (10) is adapted for retaining the removable ladder stand (1) on a rung of a ladder.
  2. 2. The removable ladder stand (1) of claim 1, where in the deformable material (30) further comprises a through hole (12) connected to the slot (10); and wherein the through hole (12) is adapted for retaining the removable ladder stand (1) on a rung of a ladder.
  3. 3. The removable ladder stand (1) of claim 2, wherein the through hole (12) is disposed along a centre line of the removable ladder stand.
  4. 4. The removable ladder stand (1) of any previous claim, wherein the removable ladder stand (1) further comprises a fastener (20); and wherein the fastener is adapted to close the slot (10).
  5. 5. The removable ladder stand (1) of claim 4, wherein the fastener (20) is a hook and loop fastener (20).
  6. 6. The removable ladder stand (1) of claim 5, wherein the fastener (20) further comprises a flap (26) and a fastener panel (28), wherein the flap (26) is connected to the deformable material (30) on one side of the slot (10) and the fastener panel (28) is connected to the deformable material (30) on the other side of the slot (10); and wherein the flap (26) is arranged such that it extends across the slot (10) suitably for covering the fastener panel (28) in an engaged position.
  7. 7. The removable ladder stand (1) of claim 6, wherein the hooks (22) of the hook and loop fastener (20) are located on the flap (26) and the loops (24) are located on the fastener panel (28).
  8. 8. The removable ladder stand (1) of claim 4, wherein the fastener (20) is one of: a toggle and loop; a buckle; a press studs; a zip; hook and eye; a frog fastener; a D-ring; a snap hook; a clasp; a buttons; a squeeze buckle; a G-hook; a cam buckle; a ratchet buckle; a roller buckle; a snap buckle; or a tie buckle.
  9. 9. The removable ladder stand (1) of any previous claim, wherein the removable ladder stand (1) further comprises a cover (2) that covers the deformable material (30).
  10. 10. The removable ladder stand (1) of claim 9, wherein the cover (2) is waterproof.
  11. 11. The removable ladder stand (1) of claim 9 or 10, wherein the cover (2) is is made of a tear resistant material.
  12. 12. The removable ladder stand (1) of claim 11, wherein the tear resistant material is a polymer fabric; preferably wherein the polymer fabric is a nylon fabric.
  13. 13. The removable ladder stand (1) of any of claims 9 to 12 wherein the cover (2) further comprises a carry handle (50) suitable for carrying the removable ladder stand (1).
  14. 14. The removable ladder stand (1) of any of claims 9 to 13 wherein the cover (2) further comprises at least one non-slip surface.
  15. 15. The removable ladder stand (1) of claim 14, wherein the at least one non-slip surface is rubber or PVC or nylon fabric.
  16. 16. The removable ladder stand (1) of any previous claim, wherein the deformable material (30) is a foam.
  17. 17. The removable ladder stand (1) of claim 16, wherein the foam is a recycled foam.
  18. 18. The removable ladder stand (1) of any previous claim, wherein the deformable material (30) is substantially "C" shaped.
  19. 19. The removable ladder stand (1) of any of claims 9-18, wherein the cover (2) further comprises an alignment aid (40) suitable for aiding a user to align the removable ladder stand (1) on a ladder.
  20. 20. The removable ladder stand (1) of claim 19, wherein the alignment aid (40) is a visual aid (42), preferably the visual aid (42) is a mark or patch or text or logo.
  21. 21. The removable ladder stand (1) of claim 19 or 20, wherein the alignment aid (40) is disposed on the cover (2) such that the alignment aid (40) is located 90 to 270 degrees circumferentially from the opening (16) of the slot (10); preferably wherein the alignment aid (40) is located 135 to 225 degrees circumferentially from the opening (16) of the slot (10); and more preferably wherein the alignment aid (40) is located 180 degrees circumferentially from the opening (16) of the slot (10).
  22. 22. A method of forming a removable ladder stand (1), including the step of providing: a deformable material (30); and the further steps of: cutting the deformable material (30) to form a slot (10) adapted for retaining the removable ladder stand (1) on a rung of a ladder.
  23. 23. The method of forming a removable ladder stand (1) of claim 22 further comprising the step of coring a through hole (12) through the deformable material (30); wherein the through hole (12) is connected to the slot (10); and wherein the through hole (12) is adapted for retaining the removable ladder stand (1) on a rung of a ladder.
  24. 24. The method of forming a removable ladder stand (1) of claim 22 or 23, further including the step of providing a cover (2) to cover the deformable material (30).
  25. 25. The method of forming a removable ladder stand (1) of one of claims 22 to 24, further including the step of providing fastener (20) connected to the deformable material (30).
