Abstract

A vehicle underframe runner 100 has a first side 101 substantially parallel to a second side 102 with the first and second sides connected by a third side 103 substantially perpendicular to the first and second sides. First side 101 has a first slot 104a configured to house a bolt head. Second side 102 has a rebate 105, and may have a tapered and/or grooved member 106 extending towards first side 101 and another member 109, which may be L-shaped, extending into rebate 105. Third side 103 has a second slot 104b and a third slot 104c, each slot being configured to house a bolt head. Slots 104a, 104b, 104c may each comprise a stepped profile.

Description

VEHICLE UNDERFRAME RUNNER
Field of the invention
The present invention relates to a vehicle underframe runner.
Background to the invention
Vehicle underframe runners allow attachment of a vehicle body to a vehicle chassis. Present underframe runners require the addition of drilled mounting brackets to attach the runner to a chassis. Further, there is a need for the runner to accommodate and provide clearance to chassis fittings and vehicle wiring, and for a means to attach weight bearing cross beams to the runners.
As such, there is a need for a vehicle underframe runner to better accommodate attachment of a vehicle body to the vehicle chassis.
Objects and aspects of the present invention seek to alleviate at least these problems with the prior art.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a vehicle underframe runner, the runner comprising; a first side substantially parallel to a second side, the first side and second side connected by a third side substantially perpendicular to the first side and second side; wherein the first side comprises a first slot configured to house a bolt head; wherein the second side comprises a rebate; wherein the third side comprises a second slot and a third slot, each configured to house a bolt head.
In this way, there is provided an improved vehicle underframe runner for better accommodation of a vehicle body to a vehicle chassis and to vehicle weight bearing cross beams.
Preferably, the second side comprises a first member extending from the second side towards the first side in a direction parallel to the third side. Preferably, first member comprises a groove on its surface furthest from the first side. Preferably, the first member comprises a tapered portion. Preferably, the first member is tapered at a 45 degree angle.
Preferably, the second side comprises a second member extending into the rebate in a direction perpendicular to the third side. Preferably, the second member extends a distance into the rebate greater than 5% the width of the rebate. More preferably, the second member extends a distance into the rebate greater than 15% the width of the rebate. Preferably, the second member is substantially L shaped.
Preferably, the centre line of the first slot is located closer to the second side than the centre line of the rebate. In this way, the rebate is offset from the centre of the second side in a direction away from the third side.
Preferably, the first side comprises a third member extending from the first side towards the second side in a direction parallel to the third side. Preferably, the third member extends a distance at least the depth of the first slot.
Preferably, the profile of the first slot, second slot and third slot is substantially identical. Preferably, each slot comprises an aperture and the width of the slot increases after the aperture. Preferably, each slot comprises a stepped profile. In this way, a bolt head can be accommodated into each of the slots during use.
Preferably, the runner comprises a channel defined by an interior surface of the runner. Preferably, the first member and the third member define the opening of the channel. Preferably, the channel comprises a first recess located between the third member and the first slot. Preferably, the first recess is substantially U shaped. Preferably, the channel comprises a second recess located between the first slot and the second slot. Preferably, the second recess is elongate. Preferably, the channel comprises a third recess located between the second slot and the third slot. Preferably, the third recess is substantially U shaped. Preferably, the channel comprises a fourth recess located between the third slot and the rebate.
Preferably, the first slot is located on the surface of the first side furthest from the second side. Preferably, the second slot and third slot are located on the surface of the third side furthest from the first side and second side. Preferably, the line equidistant from the second slot and the third slot is located closer to the second side than the first side. Preferably, the first slot is located at the midpoint of the first side.
Preferably, the cross section of the runner is constant along the length of the runner. Preferably, the runner is formed from substantially a single piece. Preferably, the first side and second side are equal in length. Preferably, the width of the runner is substantially constant.
Preferably, the first side and second side are each 50mm in length. Preferably, the runner thickness is greater than 2mm. Preferably, the runner thickness is less than 5mm. More preferably, the runner thickness is 3mm. Preferably, the third side is 2.5 times the length of the first side and second side. Preferably, the third side is 125mm in length.
Preferably, the distance between the centre of the second slot and third slot is 40mm. Preferably, the centre of the second slot and third slot are a distance of 30mm and 70mm, respectively, from the second side. Preferably, the centre of the first slot is 25mm from the third side.
Preferably, the aperture of each slot is 8.5mm. Preferably, the minimum slot width is 8.19mm. Preferably, the maximum slot width is 13.5mm. Preferably, the minimum slot depth is 7mm. Preferably, the maximum slot depth is 10.5mm.
Preferably, the rebate is substantially rectangular. Preferably, the minimum rebate depth is 6.5mm. Preferably, the maximum rebate depth is 9.5mm. Preferably, the rebate width is 27mm.
Preferably, the groove is substantially trapezoid. Preferably, the groove depth is 0.5mm.
Preferably, the minimum groove width is 7.73mm.
Preferably, the length of the second member is 8.5mm. Preferably, the distance between the first member and the first side is 81mm. Preferably, the first side and third side meet at right angles with an external fillet radius of 4mm and internal fillet radius of 3mm and the second side and third side meet at right angles with an external fillet radius of 4mm and internal fillet radius of 3mm.
Detailed Description
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 depicts a view of a runner in accordance with the prior art, attached to a vehicle chassis; Figure 2 depicts a perspective view of a vehicle underframe runner in accordance with the first aspect of the present invention; Figure 3 depicts a side view of the vehicle underframe runner of Figure 2; and Figure 4 depicts a further side view of the vehicle underframe runner of Figure 2.
With reference to Figure 1, there is illustrated a pair of vehicle underframe runners 10 in accordance with the prior art attached to a vehicle chassis 20. The vehicle comprises a plurality of weight bearing cross beams 30 attached to the pair of runners 10. Drilled mounting brackets 40 are required to attach the runners 10 to the chassis 20.
With reference to Figures 2, 3 and 4, there is illustrated a vehicle underframe runner 100 in accordance with the first aspect of the present invention, the runner 100 comprising a first side 101, second side 102 and third side 103. The first side 101 is substantially parallel to the second side 102 and the first side 101 is connected to the second side 102 by the third side 103. The third side 103 is substantially perpendicular to the first side 101 and the second side 102. The first side 101 and second side 102 are each 50mm in length, the third side 103 is 125mm in length and the runner 100 has a constant thickness of 3mm.
Figures 2 and 3 show only a short portion of the runner 100 and it is envisaged in many embodiments that the runner 100 depth spans greater than lm. In this way, the runner 100 spans the length of a vehicle chassis, as shown in the prior art of Figure 1. The runner 100 is shown attached, in use, to a bracket 80 and a pair of bolts. The measurements indicated in Figure 4 are shown in mm.
The first side 101 comprises a first slot 104a configured to house a bolt head. The third side 103 comprises a second slot 104b and a third slot 104c, each configured to house a bolt head 90, as shown in Figure 3. The profile of the first slot 104a, second slot 104b and third slot 104c are substantially identical. Each of the first slot 104a, second slot 104b and third slot 104c comprise an aperture and the width of each slot increases after the aperture, such that the first slot 104a, second slot 104b and third slot 104c comprise a stepped profile.
The first slot 104a is located on the surface of the first side 101 furthest from the second side 102 and the second slot 104b and third slot 104c are located on the surface of the third side 103 furthest from the first side 101 and second side 102. The first slot 104a is located at the midpoint of the first side 101. The line A equidistant from the second slot 104b and the third slot 104c is located closer to the second side 102 than the first side 101. In this way, the runner 100 is better configured to attach to a vehicle body and vehicle chassis during use.
The distance between the centre of the second slot 104b and third slot 104c is 40mm and the centre of the second slot 104b and third slot 104c are a distance of 30mm and 70mm, respectively, from the second side 102. The centre of the first slot 104a is 25mm from the third side 103. The aperture of each of the first slot 104a, second slot 104b and third slot 104c is 8.5mm, the minimum slot width is 8.19mm, the maximum slot width is 13.5mm, the minimum slot depth is 7mm and the maximum slot depth is 10.5mm.
The second side 102 comprises a first member 106 extending from the second side 102 towards the first side 101 in a direction parallel to the third side 103. The first member 106 comprises a groove 107 on its surface furthest from the first side 101. The groove 107 is substantially trapezoid and has a depth of 0.5mm and a minimum width of 7.73mm.
The first member 101 also comprises a tapered portion located adjacent the groove 107. The first member 106 is tapered at a 45 degree angle. The distance between the first member 106 and the first side 101 is 81mm.
The second side 102 comprises a substantially rectangular rebate 105. The centre line B of the first slot 104a is located closer to the second side 102 than the centre line C of the rebate 105. In this way, the rebate 105 is offset from the centre of the second side 102 in a direction away from the third side 103.
The second side 102 comprises an L-shaped second member 109 extending out from the second side 102 in a perpendicular direction and then extending into the rebate 105 in a direction perpendicular to the third side 103. The second member 109 extends a distance into the rebate 105 of around 20% the width of the rebate 105.
The minimum rebate 105 depth, namely the depth of the rebate 105 between the second side 102 and the second member 109, is 6.5mm. The maximum rebate 105 depth is 9.5mm, the rebate 105 width is 27mm and the length the second member extends into the rebate is 5.5mm.
The first side 101 comprises a third member 110 extending from the first side 101 towards the second side 102 in a direction parallel to the third side 103. The third member 110 is substantially straight and extends a distance greater than the depth of the first slot 104a.
The runner 100 further comprises a channel 111 defined by an interior surface 112 of the runner. The first member 106 and the third member 110 define the opening of the channel 111. The channel 111 comprises a substantially U shaped first recess 113 located between the third member 110 and the first slot 104a. The channel 111 further comprises an elongate second recess 114 located between the first slot 104a and the second slot 104b. The channel 111 further comprises a U-shaped third recess 115 located between the second slot 104b and the third slot 104c. The channel further comprises a fourth recess 116 located between the third slot 104c and the rebate 105.
The cross section of the runner 100 is constant along the length of the runner 100 and the runner 100 is formed from a single piece of metal. The bolts of the chassis and weight bearing cross beams slot within the first slot 104a, second slot 104b and third slot 104c removing the need for drilled mounting brackets to attach the runner to a chassis.
The first side 101 and third side 103 meet at right angles with an external fillet radius of 4mm and internal fillet radius of 3mm and the second side 102 and third side 103 meet at right angles with an external fillet radius of 4mm and internal fillet radius of 3mm.

Claims (23)

  1. CLAIMS1. A vehicle underframe runner, the runner comprising; a first side substantially parallel to a second side, the first side and second side connected by a third side substantially perpendicular to the first side and second side; wherein the first side comprises a first slot configured to house a bolt head; wherein the second side comprises a rebate; wherein the third side comprises a second slot and a third slot, each configured to house a bolt head.
  2. 2. The runner of claim 1, wherein the second side comprises a first member extending from the second side towards the first side in a direction parallel to the third side.
  3. 3. The runner of claim 2, wherein the first member comprises a groove on its surface furthest from the first side.
  4. The runner of claim 2 or claim 3, wherein the first member comprises a tapered portion.
  5. 5. The runner of any one preceding claim, wherein the second side comprises a second member extending into the rebate in a direction perpendicular to the third side.
  6. 6. The runner of claim 5, wherein the second member extends a distance into the rebate greater than 15% the width of the rebate.
  7. The runner of claim 5 or claim 6, wherein the second member is substantially L shaped.
  8. 8. The runner of any one preceding claim, wherein the centre line of the first slot is located closer to the second side than the centre line of the rebate.
  9. 9. The runner of any one preceding claim, wherein the first side comprises a third member extending from the first side towards the second side in a direction parallel to the third side.
  10. 10. The runner of claim 9, wherein the third member extends a distance at least the depth of the first slot.
  11. 11. The runner of any one preceding claim, wherein the profile of the first slot, second slot and third slot is substantially identical.
  12. 12. The runner of claim 11, wherein each slot comprises an aperture and the width of the slot increases after the aperture.
  13. 13. The runner of claim 12, wherein each slot comprises a stepped profile.
  14. 14. The runner of any one preceding claim, wherein the runner comprises a channel defined by an interior surface of the runner.
  15. 15. The runner of claim 14, wherein the first member and the third member define the opening of the channel.
  16. 16. The runner of claim 14 or claim 15, wherein the channel comprises a first recess located between the third member and the first slot.
  17. 17. The runner of any one of claims 14-16, wherein the channel comprises a second recess located between the first slot and the second slot.
  18. 18. The runner of any one of claims 14-17, wherein the channel comprises a third recess located between the second slot and the third slot.
  19. 19. The runner of any one of claims 14-18, wherein the channel comprises a fourth recess located between the third slot and the rebate.
  20. 20. The runner of any one preceding claim, wherein the first slot is located on the surface of the first side furthest from the second side.
  21. 21. The runner of any one preceding claim, wherein the second slot and third slot are located on the surface of the third side furthest from the first side and second side.
  22. 22. The runner of any one preceding claim, wherein the line equidistant from the second slot and the third slot is located closer to the second side than the first side.
  23. 23. The runner of any one preceding claim, wherein the first slot is located at the midpoint of the first side.
