Abstract

260,397. Empson, A. W. Sept. 21, 1925. Density and strainer separators combined. - Liquids are purified in. a centrifugal separator by passage through a zone of high centrifugal force to remove the coarser impurities and then through a filter in a zone of diminished centrifugal force to remove the finer impurities. The separator shown has a stack 5 of paper rings to form the filter. The fluid is introduced into the tube 1 and flows round the skirt 3 into the separating space adjacent the drum wall. The spilling diameter of the outlet 11 is adjusted, so that the heavier liquidwater, for instance, extends inward beyond the periphery of the skirt 3, thus forming a water seal through which incoming oil must pass and be washed. Dirt and water are separated from the oil in the space outside the filter stack 5 and the oil flows between the filter layers inwardly into the discharge ducts. The pressure upon the filter stack may be regulated by the nut 9.
