Description

A WHEELBARROW WITH A PAIR OF
PIVOTALLY MOUNTED REAR WHEEL ARRANGEMENTS
This invention relates to a wheelbarrow and, more especially, this invention relates to a wheelbarrow with a pair of pivotally mounted rear wheel arrangements. The wheelbarrow is especially useful as a fishing wheelbarrow but the wheelbarrow may be used for other purposes if desired, for example gardening or building purposes.
Fishing wheelbarrows are widely used to transport heavy loads of fishing equipment to fishing venues, for example lakes and rivers, conveniently and in one trip. Usually the fishing wheelbarrow are required to travel over terrain that is rough and that has ruts, bumps and hollows. Typically the fishing wheelbarrows comprise a frame, a front wheel arrangement, and a hand-holding arrangement for use in moving the wheelbarrow. Sometimes the fishing wheelbarrows have a pair of rear wheel arrangements which are provided in order to help avoid lifting the load manually, as occurs in the absence of the pair of rear wheel arrangements. The rear wheel arrangements also aid support and generally enhance ease of use. The rear wheel arrangements are fixed in position and this can create difficulty in steering, especially when the fishing wheelbarrow is loaded. Typically a user needs to stop and then lift the rear of the fishing wheelbarrow whilst rotating the fishing wheelbarrow. This is undesirable and difficult with heavy loads. The problem also occurs if the wheelbarrow is used for purposes other than fishing.
It is an aim of the present invention to avoid or reduce the above mentioned problem.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided a wheelbarrow comprising a frame, a front wheel arrangement, a pair of rear wheel arrangements, and a hand-holding arrangement for use in moving the wheelbarrow, and wherein each of the rear wheel arrangements comprises at least one wheel which is pivotally mounted with respect to the frame, and wherein the wheelbarrow comprises limiting means for limiting pivoting of the rear wheel arrangements to a pivoting angle of less than 180°.
The wheelbarrow of the present invention is advantageous in that the pivotally mounted rear wheel arrangements enable the wheelbarrow more easily to be steered than would be the case if the rear wheel arrangements were fixed. Thus, with the pivotally mounted rear wheel arrangements, the wheelbarrow can be steered whilst the wheelbarrow is continually moving, and there is no need to stop the wheelbarrow and then lift the rear of the wheelbarrow whilst rotating the wheelbarrow in order to change direction. The wheelbarrow of the present invention is further advantageous in that it comprises the limiting means for limiting pivoting of the rear wheel arrangements to a pivoting angle of less than 180°. Without the limiting means, the rear wheel arrangements could be mounted such that they rotate through 360°. However, with such a 360° pivoting movement, each of the rear wheel arrangements would be able to pivot to 1800 which would mean that each of the rear wheel arrangements could then be at right angles to the direction of travel. In this case, the rear wheel arrangements would be unable to roll in the direction of travel and they would bring the wheelbarrow to an unexpected abrupt stop, which could be dangerous. The limiting means prevents this happening. Thus the wheelbarrow of the present invention is able to be steered in a safe and easy manner.
The wheelbarrow may be such that there is one of the limiting means for each one of the rear wheel arrangements.
The wheelbarrow may be one in which the limiting means comprises a slot and a stop member, with operates in the slot. The slot may be a curved slot and the stop member may be a stop pin.
Alternatively, the wheelbarrow may be one in which the limiting means comprises a stop member for operating between a pair of spaced apart abutment members, with each of the abutment members defining one extremity of movement of the stop member. Other types of limiting means may be employed.
Typically, the wheel of each of the rear wheel arrangements will be pivotally mounted on a pivot shaft.
Each of the rear wheel arrangements may be releasably mounted to a rear leg part of the frame. In this case, each of the rear wheel arrangements may comprise a socket for receiving a lower end of one of the rear leg part of the frame, and screw threaded securing means for securing the socket on the lower end of the rear leg part of the frame. Other types of releasably mounted rear wheel arrangements may be employed. If desired, the rear wheel arrangements may be permanently mounted to rear leg parts of the frame.
The wheelbarrow may be a motorised wheelbarrow. In this case, the motorised wheelbarrow may comprise an electric motor which is mounted for driving the front wheel arrangement of the wheelbarrow. Alternatively, the wheelbarrow may be hand push wheelbarrow.
Preferably, the front wheel arrangement comprises a single wheel. If desired however the front wheel arrangement may comprise two wheels.
Preferably, each of the rear wheel arrangements comprises a single wheel, If desired however each of the rear wheel arrangements may comprise two wheels.
The hand holding arrangement preferably comprises a pair of spaced apart handles. Alternatively, the hand holding arrangement may be a single bar.
The frame is preferably an open frame. The open frame may be of any suitable design. The open frame typically comprises hollow frame members. If desired the frame may be a closed frame.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows part of a wheelbarrow of the present invention; Figure 2 is an enlarged view of a rear left hand wheel arrangement in the wheelbarrow shown in Figure 1; and Figure 3 is an enlarged view from above of part of the rear wheel arrangement shown in Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a wheelbarrow 2 of a type used for fishing. The wheelbarrow 2 comprises a frame 4, a front wheel arrangement 6 and a pair of rear wheel arrangements 8. The wheelbarrow 2 also comprises a hand-holding arrangement 10 for use in moving the wheelbarrow 2.
The wheelbarrow 2 is one in which each one of the rear wheel arrangements 6 comprises at least one wheel 12 which is pivotally mounted with respect to the frame 4. The wheelbarrow 2 is also one in which the wheelbarrow 2 comprises limiting means 14 for limiting pivoting of the rear wheel arrangements 8 to a pivoting angle of less than 180°. The pivoting angle may be, for example, in the range of 120° -160°. Such a pivoting angle ensures that the rear wheel arrangements 8 do not pivot too close to the 180° and then commence to impede smooth movement and steering of the wheelbarrow 2.
The wheelbarrow 2 is such that there is one of the limiting means 14 for each one of the rear wheel arrangements 8. The limiting means 14 comprises a slot 16 and a stop member 18 which operates in the slot 16. The slot 16 is a curved slot. The stop member 18 is a stop pin.
The wheel 12 of each of the rear wheel arrangements 8 is pivotally mounted on a pivot shaft 20.
Each of the rear wheel arrangements 8 is releasably mounted to a rear leg part 22 of the frame 4. More specifically, each of the rear wheel arrangements 8 comprises a socket 24 for receiving a lower end 26 of the rear leg part 22 of the frame 4. Each of the rear wheel arrangements 8 also comprises screw threaded securing means 28 for securing the socket 24 on the lower end 26 of the rear leg part 22 of the frame 4.
The wheelbarrow 2 is a motorised wheelbarrow. Thus the wheelbarrow 2 comprises an electric motor 30 which is mounted for driving the front wheel arrangement 6 of the wheelbarrow 2.
The front wheel arrangement 6 comprises a single wheel 12 as shown.
Similarly, each of the rear wheel arrangements 8 comprises a single wheel 12 as shown.
The hand holding arrangement 10 comprises a pair of spaced apart handles 32. The handles 32 terminate in hand grips 34. The frame 4 is an open frame comprises hollow open frame members 36. Some of the frame members 36 are separately manufactured and then connected together by connecting formations 38, 40 and screw threaded hand tightening devices 42.
The wheelbarrow 2 is such that the rear wheel arrangements 8 enhance ease of use by providing ease of steering of the wheelbarrow 2 when it is moving, and support for the wheelbarrow 2 when it is stationary.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, other types of limiting means 14 may be employed. The wheelbarrow 2 may alternatively be a hand-push wheelbarrow 2. The front and/or rear wheel arrangements 6, 8 may comprise two wheels rather than a single wheel 12.
The hand holding arrangement 10 may alternatively be a single continuous curved bar rather than the illustrated two separate handles 32. The wheelbarrow 2 may be used for purposes other than fishing. Individual components shown in the drawings are not limited to use in their drawings and they may be used in other drawings and in all aspects of the invention. The invention also extends to the individual components mentioned and/or shown above, taken singly or in any combination.
