Description

Tipping Trailer
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to tipping trailer for carrying and discharging bulk or particulate material.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
It is known to provide tipping trailer comprising a trough or bucket like load carrying body mounted on a wheels chassis having a draw bar to permit the trailer to be coupled to a towing vehicle, such as a tractor, wherein the load carrying body is pivotally attached to the chassis to allow the body to be tilted rearwardly to facilitate unloading of the trailer via a rear door of the body. Such tipping trailers are commonly used to transport bulk material, such as stone, gravel or sand. A problem with such known tipping trailers is that the driver of the towing vehicle cannot easily see the material as it is discharged from the load carrying body as it is tilted.
It is also known to provide stone cart trailers, wherein a load carrying body, typically in the form of a hopper, is fixedly mounted on a chassis of the trailer, the body being adapted to discharge material from a lower discharge opening at a bottom end of the hopper onto a transversely extending conveyor mounted beneath the hopper. While the driver can better see material as it is discharged from such hoppers, the shape of the hopper limits the capacity of the trailer.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved tipping trailer which overcomes the disadvantages of the prior art.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to the present invention there is provided a tipping trailer comprising a chassis having a drawbar and an axle assembly incorporating at least one ground engaging wheel; a load carrying body having a front end and a rear end, the load carrying body being mounted on the chassis via a first pivotal attachment at or adjacent said front end of the body and a second pivotal attachment at or adjacent said rear end of the body; wherein said first and second pivotal attachments are selectively releasable from 5 the chassis such that, in a first configuration with the first pivotal attachment released and the second pivotal attachment engaged, the load carrying body can be tilted rearwardly with respect to the chassis about the second pivotal attachment and, in a second configuration, with the second pivotal attachment released and the first pivotal attachment engaged, the load carrying body can be tilted forwardly 10 with respect to the chassis about the first pivotal attachment.
Each of said first and second pivotal attachments may comprise a pivot axis extending transverse to the chassis.
In a preferred embodiment a conveyor is mounted on the chassis at or adjacent the front end of the load carrying body, said conveyor being adapted to receive material from said load carrying body when tilted forwardly with respect to the chassis and to convey said material to a discharge location to one side of the chassis. The conveyor may comprise a belt conveyer extending transverse to the chassis.
The load carrying body may include a discharge opening in or adjacent a bottom wall thereof through which material may be discharged onto said conveyor when the load carrying body is tilted forwardly with respect to the chassis.
Each of said first and second pivot attachments may be provided with a respective actuating means for selectively engaging and releasing each of said first and second pivot attachments.
One or more rams may be provided for tilting the load carrying body with respect to the chassis. Said one or more rams preferably act between the chassis at a first location thereon and the load carrying body at a first location on the load carrying body when the load carrying body is to be tilted forwardly and a second location on the load carrying body when the load carrying body it to be tilted rearwardly. An actuating means may be provided for moving the point at which the one or more rams acts upon the load carrying body between said first and second locations thereon.
The rear end of the load carrying body may incorporate a gate from which material 5 can be discharged when the load carrying body is tilted rearwardly with respect to the chassis
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
A tipping trailer in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tipping trailer in accordance with an embodiment 15 of the present invention; Figure 2 is a side view of the trailer of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a front view of the trailer of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a side view of the trailer of Figure 1 with the load carrying body tilted rearwardly with respect to the chassis; and Figure 5 is a side view of the trailer of Figure 1 with the load carrying body tilted 25 forwardly with respect to the chassis.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
A tipping trailer in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, as 30 illustrated in the drawings, comprises a chassis 2 having a draw bar 4 for coupling to a towing vehicle, such as a tractor, and an axle assembly comprising an axle and at least one ground engaging wheel 6,8 mounted on either end the axle.
A trough shaped load carrying body 12, having a front end and a rear end with respect to the normal direction of travel of the trailer, is mounted on the chassis 2. The load carrying body 12 is mounted on the chassis 2 via a first pivotal attachment 14 at or adjacent said front end of the body 12 and a second pivotal attachment 16 at or adjacent said rear end of the body 12, wherein said first and second pivotal attachments are selectively releasable from the chassis 2 such that, in a first configuration, as shown in Figure 4, with the first pivotal attachment 14 released and the second pivotal attachment 16 engaged, the load carrying body 12 can be tilted rearwardly with respect to the chassis 2 about the second pivotal attachment 16 and, in a second configuration, as shown in Figure 5, with the second pivotal attachment 16 released and the first pivotal attachment 14 engaged, the load carrying body 12 can be tilted forwardly with respect to the chassis 2 about the first pivotal attachment 14.
A discharge gate 18 is provided at a rear end of the load carrying body 2, the gate 18 being openable when the body 12 is tilted rearwardly with respect to the chassis 2 to discharge material therefrom.
A transversely extending belt conveyor 20 is mounted on the chassis 2 to be positioned beneath the front end of the load carrying body 12. The load carrying body 12 preferably includes a discharge opening (not shown in the drawings) in a bottom wall thereof, at or adjacent a front end of the load carrying body 12, for discharging material from the body 12 onto the conveyor 20, in particular when the load carrying body 12 is tilted forwardly with respect to the chassis 2 about the first pivotal attachment 14. The transversely extending belt conveyor 20 is adapted to convey such material to a discharge location to one side of the chassis 2. The discharge opening in the bottom wall of the load carrying body 12 may be provided with a closure, such as a pivotally mounted or sliding gate member.
As illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, a telescopic ram 22, which may be hydraulically or pneumatically powered, acts between the chassis 2 and the body 12 to tilt the body forwardly or rearwardly depending upon the configuration of the first and second pivotal attachments 14,16.
The ram 22 may act, at a first end, between a fixed point on the chassis 2 and at a second, distal end, at either a first location 24 on the body 12 adjacent the front end of the body 12 when the body 12 is to be tilted rearwardly about the second pivotal attachment 16 or a second location 26 on the body 12 adjacent the rear end of the body 12 when the body 12 is to be tilted forwardly about the first pivotal attachment 14. An actuating means may be provided for displacing or reconfiguring the distal end of the ram 22 between said first and second locations 24,26 on the body 2 as required.
