Abstract
The handle 13 of a rowing machine is attached temporarily to the front of the seat when coaching the primary use of the legs, the handle 13 being positioned so that the rower’s legs do not strike it when rowing. The handle 13 may be attached by hooks 9, 10 to a mounting plate 1 attached to the seat assembly 14 by a sliding clamp (2, figs.1,2). The hooks 9, 10 may be mounted on a pivot tube 11 attached to a boss 8 on the mounting plate 1. Alternatively, the handle may be attached by straps, ties, clamps, loops, threaded fasteners, hook and loop tape, or a tubular retainer into which the handle slides. A pole 4 of adjustable length may be pivoted to the plate 1 at an adjustable angle, which may be set by a clamping lever (6, figs.1,2), to show the user where to position the handle at the start of the stroke.
Description
Rowing machine coaching aid This invention relates to teaching people how to use rowing machines.
Teaching people how to row with good technique on rowing machines is difficult because they almost always start the stroke by pulling with their arms. To row well it is important to use the legs first and this is difficult to teach. Coaching aids have been designed to address this problem, such as the Rowers Shadow by Kiefer and Shrauger (W02005037379A2) and the Ergo Coach manufactured by Rowfit International (huzps://www.rowfitcorqproductjerg,ocoach!). There is also an ad hoc method that is sometimes used, as per "The Strap Drill" by Tom Bohrer (Independent Rowing News -May 2006, pp. 28-29). However these only go a limited way to solving the problem as they do not allow users to row vigorously with just their legs, against the resistance that the rowing machine provides, without having to hold the rowing machine handle. This is important as holding the rowing machine handle makes most people instinctively use their arms first rather than their legs.
The present invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem by proposing a method of temporarily attaching the rowing machine handle to the front of the rowing machine seat assembly. The attachment is preferably provided by hooking the handle to the coaching aid which has been previously fitted to the seat assembly but it could be attached to the coaching aid with straps, ties, clamps, loops, threaded fasteners, hook and loop tape, a tubular retainer or retainers into which one or both ends of the handles slides, or other means.
As well as incorporating this new invention the coaching aid also has a visual indicato: whose position can be adjusted to show the user where they should be positioning the rowing machine handle when they have it in their hands at the start of the stroke. This functionality is the same as the Rowers Shadow and the Ergo Coach but the implementation is novel and advantageous as it is less bulky so it can pass between the rower's legs and also can be collapsed after use.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Drawings Figure 1. shows the coaching aid viewed from one side Figure 2 shows the coaching aid viewed from the opposite side Figure 3 shows the coaching aid mounted to a rowing machine.
Figure 4 shows the coaching aid mounted to a rowing machine seat assembly Figure 5 shows a rowing machine handle attached to the coaching aid.
In Figure 1 a mounting plate 1 is shown that can be attached to the rowing machine seat assembly using sliding clamp 2 which is clamped down using lever clamp 3. An adjustable length pole 4 is mounted to the plate 1 with a metal boss 15, and rubber bush 5 to absorb impacts. The angle of this pole is set by tightening clamp lever 6. The pole 4 has a visual indicator 7 attached to its end. A mounting boss 8 attaches to plate 1 and carries hooks 9 and 10 that mount to pivot tube 11 in such a way that the hooks can be raised and lowered to attach the rowing machine handle.
In Figure 2 a mounting plate 1 is shown that can be attached to the rowing machine seat assembly using sliding clamp 2 which is clamped down using lever clamp 3. An adjustable length pole 4 is mounted to the plate 1 with a metal boss 15, and rubber bush 5 to absorb impacts. The angle of this pole is set by tightening clamp lever 6. The pole 4 has a visual indicator 7 attached to its end. A mounting boss 3 attaches to plate 1 and carries hooks 9 and 10 that mount to pivot tube 11 in such a way that the hooks can be raised and lowered to attach the rowing machine handle!.
In Figure 3 the coaching aid is shown attached to the rowing machine seat assembly 14 on a typical rowing machine 12 with the adjustable length pole 4 set at a typical angle and length that it would be set at in use.
In Figure 4 the coaching aid is shown attached to the rowing machine seat assembly 14 and mounting plate 1 is held in place by the actuation of clamp lever 3. Hooks 9 and 10 attach to pivot tube 11, which mounts to mounting boss 8, and are shown in their pivoted down position but they can be rotated up to accept the rowing machine handle.
In figure 5 the rowing machine handle 13 is shown held by two hooks 9 and 10 which mount to pivot tube 11 which itself mounts to mounting boss 8 that is mounted on plate 1. The rowing machine seat assembly 14, the adjustable length tube 4, the metal boss 15 are also shown.
