Abstract

259,801. White, A. E., (Morgan Construction Co.). Dec. 23, 1925. Regenerators; valves, reversing. - Furnaces having a pair of regenerator passages at each end are provided with reversible blowing devices associated with each passage and adapted to be rendered operative or inoperative, and a source of producer gas adapted to be connected to one of the passages when the blowing device of this passage is inoperative. Fuel other than producer gas, such as oil or pulverized coal, may be used, all four blowing devices being then operative. Each air regenerator passage 2, 2<1> has a horizontal ground level port 29 communicating directly with a blowing casing 15 connected by a conduit 13 with an open-ended duct 14. The gas regenerator passages 3, 3' have ports 30. 30<1> disposed between ports 31, 32 and 31<1>, 32<1> respectively. The ports 31, 31<1> lead to a producer gas conduit 34 while the ports 32, 32<1> lead by ducts 35, 35<1> to blowers 15 connected with other open-ended ducts 14. Pivoted gravity-closing covers 37, 37<1> are arranged over the ports 31, 31<1> and adapted to be operated by movable hoods 38, 38<1>, Fig. 1. As shown for use with producer gas the hood 38<1> connects the ports 31', 30<1>, the cover 37<1> being open, so that producer gas is supplied to the passage 3<1>. Air is drawn in by the right-hand blower to the passage 2' and the two left-hand blowers draw out the waste gases through the passages 2, 3, the hood 38 being in position for connecting the ports 30, 32, the port 31 being closed by its cover 37 and the blower associated with the duct 35<1> being stopped. On reversal the hoods 38, 38<1> are both shifted to the right, connecting the ports 30<1>, 32' and 30, 31, closing the port 31<1> and opening the port 31, white the end blowers are reversed, the blower for the duct 35<1> started in the direction for exhausting waste gases and the blower for the duct 35 stopped. The vertical ducts 14 are lined with refractory material and filled with checker-work to protect the fans from sudden temperature changes when reversal takes place. When using oil or other fuel that is not passed through regenerator passages The hoods 38, 38<1> always connect the ports 31, 32 and 30<1>, 32', the covers 37, 37<1> being both closed. The two right-hand blowers and the two left-hand blowers are then operated and reversed together to supply air and exhaust waste gases, in conjunction with right- and left-hand burners. To cool the furnace all the blowers are operated in the exhaust direction.
