SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0005] It is an object of the present invention to provide a cart for transporting an axle, preferably a truck axle, as well as a method for preassembling an axle, preferably a truck axle, on a cart, such that the axle can be mounted on the cart in a manner especially easy for a single worker.
[0006] This object is solved by a cart for transporting an axle, preferably a truck axle, having the features of patent claim 1, as well as by a method for preassembling an axle, preferably a truck axle, on a cart having the features of patent claim 5. Advantageous embodiments with expedient developments of the invention are indicated in the other patent claims.
[0007] The invention relates to a cart for transporting an axle, preferably a truck axle, which preferably can be used to transport the axle inside a production site. The cart comprises a first support device, which is configured to provide a bearing face for the axle. This means that the axle can be supported on the bearing face supported by the first support device. In other words, the axle can be placed on the first support device. The cart furthermore comprises a second support device, which comprises at least one pivotable arm which is configured to support a component to be fixed on the axle. In other words, the component to be fixed on the axle can be placed on the second support device. The second support device is orientated relative to the first support device in such a way that the at least one component placed on the second support device can be fixed on the axle placed on the first support device.
[0008] In order to allow for a preferably easy mounting of the axle and the component to be fixed on the axle on the cart as well as an especially easy fixing of the component to the axle preferably by a single worker, this second support device comprises at least one mounting bracket, on which a first end of a leaf spring as the component to be fixed on the axle can be supported. A second end of the leaf spring is supported by the corresponding pivotable arm, by use of which the second end of the leaf spring is supported. The at least one mounting bracket is preferably fixed in its position relative to the bearing face of the first support device.
[0009] The cart allows for the axle and the component to be fixed on the axle to be placed on the cart separately, to be aligned relative to each other when they are placed on the cart and for the component to be fixed on the axle in the aligned position relative to the axle. The possibility to place the at least one component to be fixed on the axle and the axle separately on the cart allows a single worker to preassemble the axle due to the low weight of the axle and the component when placing them separately compared to a component composite of the axle and the at least one component.
[0010] Preferably the second support device is configured to hold the at least one leaf spring such that the at least one leaf spring can be aligned for assembly with the axle that is supported by the first support device. Preferably the at least one second support device allows for the at least one leaf spring to be aligned relative to the axle being supported by the first support device. The second support device is configured for the at least one leaf spring to be aligned relative to the axle in a mounting position which the elements will occupy relative to each another when being mounted on the vehicle.
[0011] Preferably, the second support device comprises a first mounting bracket and a first pivotable arm configured to support a first leaf spring and a second mounting bracket and a second pivotable arm configured to support a second leaf spring. In other words, the second support device comprises a mounting bracket and a pivotable arm for each leaf spring to be supported and to be aligned relative to the first support device or the axle being supported by the first support device. This allows for the second support device to align a respective leaf spring assigned to a respective end of the axle being supported by the first support device. This allows for a single worker to place the first leaf spring and the second leaf spring separate from each other on the second support device and to place the axle separate from the leaf springs on the first support device. This allows for the single worker to handle the leaf springs and the axle separate from each other such that the leaf springs can be aligned very easily relative to the axle and be fixed to the axle.
[0012] Preferably, the second support device is configured to hold the at least one leaf spring on its own. In other words, the second support device is configured to support the at least one leaf spring whether or not the respective leaf spring is fixed on the axle. This allows for the at least one leaf spring to be placed on the second support device before the axle is placed on the first support device and the axle to be placed on the first support device after the at least one leaf spring is placed on the second support device. Therefore, the at least one leaf spring and the axle can be placed on the cart one after another and therefore successively.
[0013] The invention also relates to a method for preassembling an axle, preferably a truck axle, on a cart comprising a first support device and a second support device. The method comprises securing at least one leaf spring with its first end on a mounting bracket of a second support device of the cart and its second end on a pivotable arm of the second support device, securing the axle on a bearing face of a first support device of the cart, and fixing the at least one leaf spring on the axle. Consequently, the at least one leaf spring and the axle can be placed on the cart independently of each other and can be fixed relative to each other in a state in which the axle as well as the at least one leaf spring are supported on the cart. This allows for the axle to be preassembled on the cart with the at least one leaf spring whereby the axle and the at least one leaf spring as a component to be fixed on the axle can be placed on the cart especially easily.
[0014] The cart as well as the method are configured to aid in an assembly and installation of the axle, preferably an electric axle on a truck, preferably an electric truck. The cart allows for a single person to mount the at least one leaf spring on the axle prior to installation of the axle on the truck, reducing a number of personnel needed and providing an ergonomic means with which to install the axle on a chassis of the truck. The method allows for a number of personnel required for installation to be especially low and allows for potentially less chance of injury for technicians installing suspension components, which in general are quite heavy.
[0015] Further advantages, features, and details of the invention derive from the following description of preferred embodiments as well as from the drawings. The features and feature combinations previously mentioned in the description as well as the features and feature combinations mentioned in the following description of the figures and/or shown in the figures alone can be employed not only in the respectively indicated combination but also in any other combination or taken alone without leaving the scope of the invention.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0022] In Fig. 1 a cart 10 for transporting an axle, preferably a truck axle 12 is shown. The cart 10 is configured to transport the truck axle 12, preferably in a production site. The truck axle 12 is part of a vehicle, preferably an electric truck. The cart 10 comprises a frame 14 on which a first support device 16 and a second support device 18 are mounted. Furthermore the cart 10 comprises several wheels 20 by use of which the frame 14 can be moved along a surface, preferably a ground surface on which the cart 10 is supported.
[0023] The first support device 16 comprises a cross-member 22, which is held and positioned relative to the frame 14 by respective stands 24. On each end of the cross-member 22 the cross-member 22 is fixed on a respective stand 24, wherein each stand 24 is fixed on the frame 14. The cross-member 22 provides a bearing face on whose surface the axle 12 can be placed. An outer contour 26 of the cross-member 22 fits an outline of the axle 12 to aid in alignment when placing the axle 12 on the cart 10. Thus, the outer contour 26 defines the bearing face. At either end of the cross-member 22, the stands 24 allow either end of the axle 12 to be secured. The cross-member 22 can also comprise a cut-out 28 for access to an oil drain plug of the axle 12.
[0024] The frame 14 further comprises a rear platform 30 which provides a platform for a rear housing 32 of the electric truck axle 12 and allows for the electric axle assembly to rest on it.
[0025] In Fig. 2 the axle 12 is placed on the cart 10, wherein the axle 12 is preassembled. In Fig. 2 it can be seen that an external contour of the axle 12 matches the outer contour 26 of the cross-member 22. This allows for a reliable support of the axle 12 along the length of the axle 12 by use of the cross-member 22.
[0026] The cart 10 further comprises the second support device 18 which comprises at least one pivotable arm 34 and at least one mounting bracket 36. In the present embodiment, the second support device 18 comprises two pivotable arms 34 and two mounting brackets 36. The pivotable arms 34 can be rotated around a rotation axis independent of each other. By use of slots 38 in the pivotable arms 34 each pivotable arm 34 can be fixed in any rotation position around the pivoting axis. On the frame 14 for each pivotable arm 34 a tab 40 can be mounted, on which the respective aligned pivotable arm 34 is mounted and relative to which the respective pivotable arm 34 is rotatable.
[0027] A first mounting bracket 36 and a first pivotable arm 34 are configured to hold a first leaf spring 42 while the second mounting bracket 36 and the second mounting arm 34 are configured to hold a second leaf spring 42. A first end of each leaf spring 42 is to be mounted on the respective mounting bracket 36 while a second end of each leaf spring 42 is to be mounted on the respective pivotable arm 34, especially by use of respective pins 44 mounted on a free end of each pivotable arm 34. The second support device 18 is configured to hold each leaf spring 42 on its own and therefore independently of the axle 12. By use of the second support device 18 each of the leaf springs 42 can be supported for assembly with the axle 12 that may be supported by the first support device 16.
[0028] In Figs. 2 to 4 the cart 10 is shown from different angles in respective schematic views wherein the preassembled axle 12 is supported by the cart 10. To preassemble the axle 12, the leaf springs 42 can be placed on the second support device 18 separate from one another and preferably subsequently. After that, the axle 12 can be placed on the first support device 16 and subsequently the leaf springs 42 can be fixed to the axle 12.
[0029] The axle cart 10 comprises the two movable arms 34 that are designed to accommodate the respective leaf spring 42 of a suspension system. The pivotable arms 34 are able to be locked in an upright position in order to hold the respective spring 42. The arms 34, at their base, comprise pin holes or bolt holes as well as slots in order to accommodate a pin or a bolt to rigidly hold the respective arm 34 in the upright position, but do not constrain a downward rotation of the respective arm 34 where they may rest on the respective tab 40. The pivotable arms 34, in the upright position, may facilitate the assembly of the leaf springs 42 on the axle 12. The pivotable arms 34 can then be moved onto the tabs 40 in order to prevent any interference during the installation of the assembled axle 12 and the suspension system onto a chassis of the vehicle.
[0030] The pins 44 on a top end of the respective movable arm 34 provide means for accommodating a spring eye bushing 48 of the respective leaf spring 42. Particularly, the pins 44 go through mounting holes on leaf spring bushing 48 as a means to hold the respective leaf spring 42 in place until it is assembled to the axle 12. The mounting brackets 36 are designed to accommodate a front end of the respective leaf spring 42. The front end of the respective leaf spring 42 can effectively rest or be mounted to the mounting brackets 36 during assembly.
[0031] The purpose of the cart 10 and the method for preassembling the axle 12 on the cart 10 is to provide a means to efficiently transport the truck axle 12 in a manufacturing facility or a shop by a single person, along with facilitating an assembly of the leaf springs 42 on the axle 12. In addition, the cart 10 allows the axle 12 to be efficiently installed on a vehicle chassis without physical interferences. The cart 10 enables ease of transportation of the truck axle 12 within a facility or shop during manufacturing or maintenance, provides improved efficiency in the maintenance and/or manufacturing process, and improves the safety of workers by allowing pieces of the axle 12 and suspension system of the truck to be secured without need for unnecessary lifting of these components. For example, each leaf spring 42 can weigh approximately 80 pounds and is typically challenging to be moved. The cart 10 can be used to accommodate an electric drive axle for commercial vehicles.
[0032] The leaf springs 42 are able to be assembled to the axle 12 by a single person since both the leaf springs 42 and the axle 12 are secured to the cart 10. In an assembly process the leaf springs 42 can first be placed on the cart 10 and secured to the movable arm 34, which can be secured in their upright position, and on the assigned mounting brackets 36. Next, the axle 12 can be placed on the cart 10. Then, the leaf springs 42 can be bolted into place on the axle 12 using carriage bolts and accompanying spacers, including a U-bolt that is secured around a housing of the axle 12. This eliminates the need for a second, or even third person to hold the leaf spring 42 under the axle 12, while the first person secures it to the axle 12. Once the axle 12 and suspension system, including leaf springs 42 and shock absorbers 46, are assembled to one another, the
S
assembly can be placed on the chassis of the vehicle. The movable arms 34 can swing out of the way to avoid physical interference while mounting the leaf springs 42.
[0033] In total the invention shows how an axle cart 10 for an axle 12, preferably a truck axle for an electric truck can be provided.
