Abstract
259,702. White, A. E., (Weeks Co., Inc., C. M.). Aug. 1, 1925. Machines for printing on pencils; index type-wheel machines. A machine for printing names &c. on pencils comprises coinfreed mechanism whereby the pencils are fed singly from a magazine and pressed into contact with printing - members such as type-wheels which are adjustable to set up different names &c. and are preferably provided with an inking-roller. In the machine shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4 the pencils 122 are stored in a magazine consisting of two channels 18, 20 engaging the ends of the pencils. The channel 18 is made narrower than the channel 20 so that only special pencils having a reduced end 22 can be employed. Type-wheels 2 mounted on a shaft 4 are provided with splayed setting-arms 10 which pass between bars 12 provided with indicia and having aligning-notches for engaging flanges 14 on the setting-arms. The bottom pencil in the magazine rests on a pair of supports 24 on a slide or platen 26 which is moved forward by a hand-crank 44 to press the pencil into contact with the type-wheels, sufficient pressure being employed to break the surface of the pencil so as to permit deposit of ink in the depressions. The hand-crank is normally locked by a coinfreed device, described below. In the forward movement of the platen, pivoted fingers 28 swing forward and then drop behind the pencil, whilst on the return movement the fingers abut on a bracket 32 and the pencil is pushed off the supports 24 and delivered through a shoot 34. In the forward movement, the platen closes the bottom of the channels and at the end of the return movement another pencil drops on to the supports. The platen is connected by links 42 to discs 38 on a shaft 40 which is locked in one direction by the hand-crank and is returned by a spring 46, the movement being limited by a stop on the casing and a co-operating stop on one of the discs. The hand-crank 44 is locked by a coin-freed device comprising a locking-lever 64 which normally engages a tooth 68 on one of the discs 38 and has the forward end arranged at the bottom of a coin guide 70. A coin inserted in a shoot 72 drops on and rocks the locking-lever, thereby permitting operation of the hand-crank. Before the coin leaves the shoot 70, the locking- lever is arrested by a lever 76 held in contact with the disc 38 by a spring 80. On operation of the hand-crank, a projection 82 on the disc retracts the lever 76 and the locking-lever permits the coin to drop into a receptacle. The locking-lever then returns to normal position and engages the tooth 68. Roller inking-arrangements.- An inking-roller 54 is revolubly mounted in arms 56 pivoted at 58 to the discs 38 and connected to springs 60. At each operation, the inking-roller runs over the types near the printing line, contact with the other types being prevented by stationary guides 62 co-operating with the ends of the inking-roller spindle.
