Abstract

259,664. Western Electric Co., Ltd., (Bell Telephone Laboratories, Inc.). July 14, 1925. Thermionic heterodyne receivers; thermionic amplifiers and detectors.-The output of a thermionic amplifier is regulated so as to obtain a substantially constant signal intensity by rectifying part of the output and impressing a potential derived therefrom so as to control the amplifier. The Figure shows a loop aerial 1 tuned by a condenser 10 connected to high frequency amplifying valves 3, 4 provided with condensers arranged to neutralize coupling between the valve input and output circuits. The output of the valve 4 is applied to the first detector 5 of a, superheterodyne type amplifier comprising a filter 6, intermediate frequency amplifier and detector 7 and a lowfrequency amplifier 8. Part of the output of the amplifier-detector 7 is selected by a circuit 13, 14 tuned to the intermediate frequency and applied to an amplifying valve 15 the output of which is rectified by a valve 16. The output of the detector 16 includes a resistance 18 the potential drop across which depends on the direct current flowing in the space path of the detector 16 and is applied to the grid of one or both the high frequency amplifying valves 4, 5 causing the anode-cathode impedance to vary and tending to maintain the signal at uniform intensity. The auxiliary wave source 2 may be coupled to the detector 5 or to the frame 1 in which case the auxiliary wave is subjected to the control of sensitivity.
