Abstract

259,638. Bell, M. r. June 12, 1925. Mechanical telegraphs; mine and colliery signals.-Relates to apparatus wherein a drum or plate is rotated to expose a direction or notice, the rotation being effected through two notched wheels one of which is rotated by the upward and downward movement of a bar having a rocking pawl attachment the pawl falling into engagement with the notches on the wheel at every upward movement of the bar and on every downward movement of the bar the pawl is disengaged by a fixture, the two wheels being retained by two pawl levers one of which is released by lever and roller trip gear and the other by a pin moved from the lifting bar or alternately from the lift cage or winding engine. A lifting bar B is actuated one or more times to ring a gong and carries a pivoted pawl N which advances step by step a ratchet wheel 2 loose on a shaft A and provided with a projection K1 adapted to engage a similar projection K2 on and rotate a ratchet wheel 1 fast on the shaft A which also carries an indicating drum P. The drum is rotated step-by-step to expose through a slot T1 a number and indication corresponding to the number of times the bar B has been moved upwards. The wheels 1, 2 are retained in position by pawls E, F of which the pawl F is released by a pin P1 on a pivoted dog Z which is moved by a lug Y on the bar B during the first part of the upward movement. The part E is released in the following manner. A roller C is adapted to roll on both an inclined plane D and a lever O. When the bar B is moved upward, the lover O is tilted by the arm R and the roller moves to the right the pawl E engaging the wheel 2 under the weight of the linkage. On downward movement of the lever, the roller moves back to the stop X and releases the pawl. A cautionary signal indicating " Men riding " is given thus. Un the third upward movement of the bar B a cam lever H with two lips moving with the shaft A contacts with a jointed arm K to rotate a disc D<1> and raise a plate M showing this signal. A fourth movement of the bar brings the second lip of the lever H into contact with a lever L and restores the disc and plate. The plate may be restored and the pawls F released by operation of a lever C1 by a cage or engine attachment; a slotted link U operating the plate M and loose link T with a roller at the lower end operat. ing the pawl. The dog Z is repositioned at the end of a signal by a projection on the wheel 2 engaging a guided link W which through a pivoted link J engaging the dog by means of a roller pushes the nose of the dog back over. the projection Y.
