Abstract
An aircraft has at least one window 1 which allows light to reflect from at least one first mirror 2 onto at least one second mirror 3 for viewing by at least one passenger. The second mirror may magnify the reflected image. Preferably the first mirror is larger than the second mirror and the second mirror may be adjustable.
Description
Windows for high altitude hypersonic commercial aircraft This invention relates to windows to allow passengers outside views with a reduced weight and cost penalty.
Commercial aviation benefits from windows allowing passengers to view a high altitude view of the world which is a selling point on its own as well as improving the travel experience. However, high altitude high supersonic and hypersonic flight requires thick and heavy windows to cope with the temperatures and pressures which generally makes them unviab le. Computer display screens potentially allow cameras to show outside views, however, computer lag time coupled with movements of the aircraft could cause travel discomfort, and a camera view takes away the sense of reality and the comfort of seeing a more direct line of sight. To overcome this, the present invention proposes an aircraft having at least one window wherein said window has at least one mirror means in optical communication with at least one second mirror means wherein said second mirror means is in optical communication with at least one passenger.
When the passenger views the mirror they will be able to see the view out of the window from a distance enabling many passengers to see near direct external views with no discernible time lag and no great increase in weight for the aircraft due to far fewer windows.
Preferably, said second mirror means is magnifying.
Preferably, there are two or more windows.
Preferably, there are two or more said first mirror means. Preferably, there are two or more said second mirror means. Preferably, there are two or more said passengers.
Preferably, said first mirror means is of an increased size relative to said second mirror means.
Preferably, said second mirror means is adjustable.
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings: - figure 1 shows a side view of windows for high altitude hypersonic commercial aircraft and; - figure 2 shows a top view of windows for high altitude hypersonic commercial aircraft and; - figure 3 shows a side view of windows for high altitude hypersonic commercial aircraft according to the invention.
An aircraft has at least one window 1 which allows light to optically bounce of at least one first mirror means 2 onto at least one second mirror means 3 for viewing by a passenger (passenger not shown, aircraft seat depicted 4). The second mirror means may be magnifying, there may be two or more windows, there may be two or more first mirror means, there may be two or more second mirror means, there may be two or more passengers, the first mirror means may be larger than the second mirror means and the second mirror means may be adjustable.
The mirrors allow many passengers to view the outside of the aircraft with near direct line of sight with far fewer windows. The actual windows are also very useful as backup inspection windows if there was a problem with onboard camera systems or onboard power supplies.
With smaller second windows this allows passengers at a distance to still see the larger first mirror without a fully obstructed view from second mirrors in the line of sight. And magnifying mirrors allow passengers to see the view from the window at a reasonable size for seats further away from the window.
Figure 3 shows how the positioning of the window and mirrors can give an unobstructed view of the window and first mirror similar to viewing a music concert as an audience member or a large video screen.
With adjustable mirrors different parts of the window via the first mirror can be viewed. The position of the first mirror can be positioned and/or adjusted to allow an optimal viewing experience for each subsequent smaller mirror.
This optical viewing system helps to give greater assurances and comfort by enabling passengers to more directly see the outside world making the journey more palatable and assuring. This also helps to eliminate fears that the view they are seeing is real rather then any fears that a computer fault or bug is affecting a digital screens image.
This helps to complement any digital screens used by passengers and even helps to detect faults in either digital display screens showing external views or even potential faults with the aircraft.
