Abstract
A hand-held tool for chamfering the end regions of plastic underground pipes comprises a frustoconical shell 15, one surface of which incorporates a frustoconical file 17. The outer surface 18 is covered with rubber grips (10, fig 3) and a handle 16 stretching across the said file so that the rotation of the operator’s hand translates directly into the rotation of the file.
Description
Field of the Invention
The invention relates to the tools used for chamfering the end regions of plastic underground pipes or the like and more particularly those chamfering tools that are handheld.
Background to the invention.
Chamfering tools and devices for pipes have been devised previously.
Many chamfering tools are power-driven as that presented in US4114484 These are complicated and cumbersome.
Other chamfering tools have been devised for manual, hand-use as that presented in GB2003/003563 and although light weight and with a collar and handle for a rotational motion, has an abrasive means and has a removeable abrasive means at that. Abrasives chamfers by scratching or rubbing which can become quite stiff to rotate with the blades and require too many rotations for a chambered edge to be even when rubbing against the plastic by abrasive means.
Using this type of hand chamfering tool can become quite time consuming to achieve the desired chamfering effect This kind of hand tool requires large amount of force and strength which older people will find hard to use hence why it is not put in practice for manual use but instead for power-driven chamfers.
One objective of the present invention is to present a hand tool for chamfering the end region of pipes or the like which requires less force and let rotations to achieve the required chamfering effect.
It is a further objective of the present invention to present configurations of a filing means destined to enhance their performance.
Files are not abrasives, files remove materials not by scratching or rubbing but by the cutting action of sharp teeth which have been cut into the surface of the file.
It is also an aim of the present invention to provide a tool which presents one solid metal mould with an inbuilt handle stretching across the inbuilt collar and sharp double cut teeth which have been cut into the surface of the file.
This mode will have rubber stretched over it to provide friction for gripping the said tool.
Having a chamfering tool made of a solid single metal mould will ensure sturdiness and longevity of the tool and low-cost manufacturing of the tool as compared to conventional systems.
Summary of the Invention
In the broadest aspect this invention presents a hand-held chamfering tool made for plastic pipes and the like, where the handle and frustoconical file will be made of one solid metal mould. The outer surface and handle will be covered in rubber for grip where the rotation of the operator's hand translates directly into the rotation of the file.
This grouping of features presents a particularly compact tool which can be efficiently handled while at the same time achieved filing of the end regions of pipe or the like Previous invention of chamfering tools incorporates an abrasive collar which removes material by scratching or rubbing whereas this said invention removes material by the cutting action of sharp teeth which have been cut into the surface of the file.
Consequently, the rotation will require less force and rotation to acquire the desired chamfer effect needed and require less time.
With the file being of a frustoconical shape this will allow for easy coupling and rotation for easy filing of the end of pipe.
The rubber handle permits for comfortable grip/friction around the periphery of the tool for gripping by hand to rotate the hand tool.
With the file means covering the full surface it will require minimal rotation and minimal time to chamfer the pipe.
Previous hand chamfering tools as that in GB2003/003563 which have teeth in the form of straight blades require too much rotational force which can become laborious.
This said invention consisting of a file type double cut surface requires less rotational force and provides a more even, precise chamfer effect.
This said invention has teeth cut into the file surface to give a filing effect whereas previous chamfering hand tools have collars added to give an abrasive effect.
File means is more advantageous due to less rotation, less rotational force and is less laborious and time-consuming.
The filing means has an advanced filing effect on the surface which in turn reduces the effort required for chamfering.
Detailed Description of Drawings Figure 1
Figure 1 presents a single unit (15) moulded to include a handle (16) and file (17) inside a metal shell (18). The file is of a frustoconical design.
Figure 2 Consequently, the diameter of the file gradually decreases from bottom to top (6). Decreased diameter will permit chamfering of the pipe to a slope that will precisely correspond to the filing to the slope of the file collar.
This invention is primarily intended for plastic underground pipes of a 4-inch, 6-inch or 9-inch diameter.
File (6) is cut into the inside of the outer metal shell. The handle (8) is metal and moulded into the outer shell creating a hand tool.
The invention has a file covering the whole inner frustoconical surface to perform a cutting action of filing the outer end of pipe to form a slope on the end of the pipe to the angle of the inner frustoconical file.
Figure 3 Figure 3 presents teeth cut into the inner surface (7) in a double cut file which is frustoconical i e has the shape of the bottom section of a cone A pipe (not illustrated in the drawing) enters file (9) at its extremity until it abuts against the file. Filing is achieved by gripping the outer shell (10) and rotating clockwise and anticlockwise around an inserted pipe.
Figure 4 In order to improve the handling of the tool, a handle (11) extends across the top of the smallest diameter of the file (12).
The tool and its components being made from a single metal mould guarantees a strong, and durable tool.
Figure 5 Figure 5 shows the single metal tool (13) covered in rubber grips (14) around the handle and around the outer surface for increased grip and comfort.
The placing of the rubber grips can be rearranged in any configuration to suit a more comfortable grip for the purpose of rotation Finger holes or prints can also be incorporated to the outer surface for gripping the chamfering tool.
Claims (5)
- Claims 1. A handheld tool for chamfering the end of plastic underground pipes or the like. The tool consisting of a file, one surface of which incorporates a file means and allows for the entry of a pipe end for the purpose of chamfering the outer end of the pipe to become a slope by filing. Also said tool incorporates a second surface for the purpose of gripping manually by hand for rotation clockwise and anticlockwise. Said tool will have a handle running across said tool for additional control of said hand tool.
- 2. A tool made entirely of one piece of metal and said metal will have grips made of rubber for comfort of the operator.
- 3. A tool where file means will be cut into the full surface of the inner wall of the outer shell for the purpose of cutting the outer end of the pipe.
- 4. A tool wherein the file itself is frustoconical i.e. has the shape of the bottom section of a cone
- 5. A tool according to any preceding claims wherein file means is adapted to cut when the frustoconical file is rotated clockwise and cut when said file is rotated anticlockwise.
