Abstract

A stand-up paddle board (SUP) includes a SUP board main body 100 having a deck 16, a longitudinal axis 18 and a lateral axis 20 and a deck pad 102 disposed on the deck of the main body. The deck pad is shaped for lateral water run-off. The deck pad may be shaped to be higher in a lateral centre and to be lower at lateral edges 28, tapering linearly or in a curve from the lateral centre to the edges. The deck pad may be located in a lateral centre of the SUP main body. The deck pad may have an arrangement of grooves (16, Fig 5) extending from a lateral central region to the lateral edges for directing water run-off. The deck pad may have a flat under surface attached to an upper surface of the deck.

Description

STAND-UP PADDLEBOARDING BOARD
IECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The present invention generally relates to stand up paddle boarding (SUP) boards, and particularly to deck pads for the SUP boards.
BACKGROUND
[0002] Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, some SUP boards have an SUP main body 100 and a deck pad 102 disposed on a deck of the SUP main body 100. The deck 102 is flat, which allows water to pool, creating a slippery surface for the user. The slippery surface can cause the user to unnecessarily fall off the SUP board 104 and could potentially be dangerous. This problem has not been acknowledged in the art heretofore.
[0003] Accordingly, it is desirable to provide an SUP board that is less likely to result in a user slipping. Furthermore, other desirable features and characteristics of the present invention will be apparent from the subsequent detailed description and the appended claims, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and the foregoing technical field and background
BRIEF SUMMARY
[0004] This summary is provided to describe select concepts in a simplified form that are further described in the Detailed Description This summary is not intended to identify key or essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended to be used as an aid in determining the scope of the claimed subject matter.
[0005] In a first aspect, there is provided a stand up paddle boarding (SUP) board including an SUP board main body having a deck, a longitudinal axis and a lateral axis, and a deck pad disposed on the deck of the main body. The deck pad is shaped for lateral water runoff.
[0006] In one embodiment, the deck pad is shaped to be higher in a lateral center and to be lower at lateral edges.
[0007] In one embodiment, the deck pad has an arrangement of grooves extending from a lateral central region to lateral edges for directing water run-off.
[0008] The deck pad described herein is shaped so that water will naturally run-off an upper surface of the deck pad under gravity. In this way, water collection or pooling on the upper surface is reduced, providing for a less slippery (and thus safer) deck pad.
100091 Furthermore, other desirable features and characteristics of the [system/method] will become apparent from the subsequent detailed description and the appended claims, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and the preceding background.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
[0010] The present invention will hereinafter be described in conjunction with the following drawing figures, wherein like numerals denote like elements, and wherein 100111 FIG. I s a perspective view of a prior art SUP board; 100121 FIG. 2 is a lateral cross-sectional view of a prior art SUP board; 100131 FIG. 3 is a perspective view of an SUP board having a shaped deck pad, in accordance with various embodiments, [0014] FIG. 4 is a lateral cross-sectional view of an SUP board having the shaped deck pad, in accordance with various embodiments; and [0015] FIG. 5 is a perspective view of an SUP board having grooves in the deck pad to facilitate lateral water run-off, in accordance with various embodiments.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0016] The following detailed description is merely exemplary in nature and is not intended to limit the invention or the application and uses of the invention. As used herein, the word "exemplary" means "serving as an example, instance, or illustration.' Thus, any embodiment described herein as "exemplary" is not necessarily to be construed as preferred or advantageous over other embodiments. All of the embodiments described herein are exemplary embodiments provided to enable persons skilled in the art to make or use the invention and not to limit the scope of the invention which is defined by the claims.
Furthermore, there is no intention to be bound by any expressed or implied theory presented in the preceding technical field, background, brief summary, or the following detailed description.
[0017] FIG. 3 provides a perspective view of an SUP board 10 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The SUP board 10 includes a main body 14 having a deck 16. The deck 16 has a deck pad 12 disposed thereon, which provides a traction surface for the user to stand upon. the deck 16 has a central longitudinal axis extending from a rear end 22 to a front end 24 and a central lateral axis 20. The deck pad 12 is located laterally centrally across the deck 16 and substantially longitudinally centrally although it may be somewhat offset in a rearward or forward direction relative to the central lateral axis 20.
[0018] The SUP board 10 may be an inflatable SUP board 10 or a solid SUP board 10.
The SUP may be made with a multitude of materials including exemplary kinds to follow. The SUP main body 14 may be a solid board made with an BPS (expanded polystyrene) foam core wrapped with fiberglass and epoxy. The SUP main body 14 may be BPS foam core covered with multiple layers of fiberglass and epoxy resin that may or may not include a soft, spongy material as the deck 16. The SUP main body 14 may have a hard thermoplastic molded shell around either a foam core or a hollow core. The cores may also be hollow wood cores. The SUP main body 14 may be a heavy duty commercial-grade PVC (polyvinyl chloride) material with drop-stitch construction that creates an inflatable air core. The deck pad can be made from a variety of materials to provide an enhanced traction standing surface on the deck 16 of the SUP board. For example, Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) and cork. The deck pad 12 is constructed distinctly from the SUP main body 14 and attached (e.g, by adhesive, by hot iron or in any other way).
[0019] In embodiments, the deck pad 12 has a bowed shape so as to peak in a lateral center and taper to be lower at the lateral edges 28. The taper of the slope from the peak at the lateral center to the lateral edges 28 is curved (a convex curve as seen by the user standing on the deck pad 12) in the present embodiment. In another embodiment shown in FIG. 4, the taper from the peak 20 at the lateral center to the lateral edges 28 is linear. In this way, water tends not to collect on an upper surface of the deck pad 12 as with flat deck pads like that shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. Instead, water will run-off the deck pad 12 from the lateral center to the lateral edges 28 to reduce instances of water pooling on the upper surface of the deck pad 12 and reduce the traction of the deck pad 12. In a further embodiment shown in FIG. 5, an arrangement of grooves 16 is included in the upper surface of the deck pad 12 that extend from a central region 32 to the lateral edges 28 to provide channels facilitating water run-off. The grooves 16 may also enhance traction of the deck pad 12. The deck pad 12 disclosed herein is manufactured with a varied thickness so as to be thicker at a lateral central and thinner at lateral edges 28. Whilst the upper side has the bowed or peaked shape, the underside of the deck pad 12 is substantially flat for attaching to a flat upper surface of the deck 16.
[0020] While at least one exemplary embodiment has been presented in the foregoing detailed description of the invention, it should be appreciated that a vast number of variations exist. It should also be appreciated that the exemplary embodiment or exemplary embodiments are only examples, and are not intended to limit the scope, applicability, or configuration of the invention in any way. Rather, the foregoing detailed description will provide those skilled in the art with a convenient road map for implementing an exemplary embodiment of the invention. It being understood that various changes may be made in the function and arrangement of elements described in an exemplary embodiment without departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
