Abstract
A water turbine boat powering system 1 has a sail column with a water tank area 17 at an upper end, which is supplied by water pipes 4, 5. The water tank 17 supplies water 20 to internally positioned water turbines 11, 16 which are linked to generators 7, 10 within a wall of the mast. Water is initially supplied (primed) by hand pump 12 but during use it is intended that a pump 13 can supply the necessary water, powered by generator 7. Excess water 14 can be exited to the original source outside the boat. The generated power is used to power a motor, lights and other electrical features on said boat.

Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to the powering of a boat using a water turbine system housed inside a sail column.
Background
The use of boats is a worldwide practice and the general powering of these is provided primarily by wind in sail or diesel. The use of wind relies on sails and therefore only applies to certain types and styles of boats. Therefore sails restrict the user to certain vessels for use.
The wide use of diesel as a method of powering a boat is common and can be found in small to large vessels and is a proven and reliable source of power for boat engines. However, this type of fuel is also very dirty and can affect the environment.
Therefore solutions have been sought to provide different boat powering methods and examples of these cited patents follow: This is shown in patent W02012080623 (VILLARD) Propulsion system (1) for ships, comprising: at least one water intake opening (2), said at least one intake opening (2) being positioned near a stem (3) of a ship: at least one water feed duct (4), said feed duct (4) collecting the water at said at least one intake opening (2) and feeding the water to a propulsion circuit (5); characterized in that said propulsion circuit (5) comprises a first module (6) positioned hydraulically upstream of an electricity Generator (7) using the force of the water as motive power source for producing electricity, said first module (6) comprising: a first conical nozzle (8) with a closed base (9) and a vertex (10) connected hydraulically to said electricity generator (7), said first conical nozzle (8) being positioned coaxially with respect to an axis of rotation (11) of the moving rotating parts of the electricity generator (7); at least one electric water pump (12) connected hydraulically via a pipe (13) to said feed duct (4), said water pump (12) being electrically powered, at least temporarily, by said electricity generator (7); at least one water injection nozzle (14), said at least one injection nozzle (14) being intended to inject into the first conical nozzle (8) the water pumped in the feed line (4) and being positioned at a lateral wali (15) of said first conical nozzle (8).
Patent W00114207 (GEVERS) Discloses a liquid-propelled vessel comprises a floatable body or inlet for receiving the liquid, typically water from a reservoir, usually the body of water on which it floats, and means (20) for pumping the water through an outlet (32) at or below the surface of the water. The vessel also includes steering means (36) which involves directing the outlet.
Patent US20110081811 (WILLIAMS) discloses a self-contained hydraulic thruster for vessel. A power pack is mounted on a forward end of a base, and a helm platform is mounted on an aft end of the base at a substantial height above the base. A reservoir in communication with the power pack is mounted on the helm platform, thus facilitating hydraulic fluid flow from the reservoir to the power pack, and also rendering the hydraulic system self-priming. At least one lower unit is tiltably mounted to the base aft end, laterally offset from the helm platform. Due to the lateral offset between the lower unit(s) and the helm platform, interference between the lower unit(s) and the helm platform is avoided when the lower unit(s) is retracted and tilted up for transportation, storage, or maintenance.
Patent US7552702 (STONE) discloses a water fueled engine, which purifies, heats and cracks water into its constituent elements in gaseous form, stores the hydrogen and oxygen separately under pressure, feeds the hydrogen to a combustion engine where it is reacted in the presence of atmospheric air, transferring the heat generated from the reaction to a water heater and torque energy to a drive shaft; an after burner that further reacts the exhaust process of the combustion engine in the presence of more atmospheric air and oxygen from the cracking process, and a turbine that drives a battery connected alternator for powering a control unit for the system, which controls all system components to ensure on demand operation.
Patent US5324216 (TOYOHARA, TASAKI) Discloses a jet pump system for a water jet propelled boat is disclosed that provides for the adjustment of the area of the water intake opening or the water entry angle as a function of the speed of the boat. During iow speed operation, the water inlet opening is adjusted to a maximum area, or the water entry angle is adjusted to a maximum angle to enable sufficient water to enter the water duct and permit efficient impeller operation. As the boat speed increases beyond a predetermined speed, the water inlet area is reduced, or the water inlet angle is reduced to prevent excess water from entering the water duct, thereby reducing the drag on the boat.
The prior art therefore shows that there is a need for a more simplified but effective way of providing power for a boat using water from the sea or lake which has fewer moving parts and is reliable over long term use.
The present invention aims to provide an improved way of generating electricity using said sea or lake water which is concealed inside the sail column and has a small number of moving parts therefore.
Summary of the invention
According to the present invention there is provided a sail column located transversely to the boat in the known way, which has a hollow interior into which the components of a water turbine system are stored. To the sail interior is an opening which allows water to flow down into the inside of the sail column interior. The water is fed from a left hand and right hand pipe which draws water directly from the water in which the boat is sailing, such as the sea or a lake. The right hand water pipe is hand pumped using a hand pump device to prime the system and fill the tank area prior to the further supply of water from the left hand water pipe which is pumped via a water pump running on electricity.
The right hand pump is used to fill the system and tank area by hand pumping and the water passes upward in the water pipe and empties from the tank area into the opening inside the sail column interior, as shown in Figure one. The water direction is indicated by the black arrows 20.
The water passes down the interior of the sail column and falls with impact onto the fins of the water turbines, turning them. The turbines are mounted within the interior of the sail column to come in direct contact with the falling water. The turning of the water turbines, of which there are at least two, rotates the drive shaft which is connected directly to a generator located to the end of each water turbine, as shown in Figure 2.
The turning action of the water turbine, due to said falling pumped water, generates electricity in the generators and this is wired away to the ship to provide motor and other required electricity power. The power also powers the water pump, which in turn continues to pump more water up the left hand pipe and into the centre area of the sail column, for continued generation of power. The generators are seated into a wall section on the inside of the sail column which is provided around the internal surface of the round sail column, this wall also accommodates some electrical wiring parts, as shown.
Excess water is exited from the water column interior through an exit point and back into the sea or lake to re-cycle the used water in a continual rotation process.
In this respect, before explaining at least one embodiment of the invention in detail, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and to the arrangements of the components set forth in the following description or illustrated in the drawings. The invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced and carried out in various ways. Also, it is to be understood that the phraseology and terminology employed herein are for the purpose of description and should not be regarded as limiting.
As such, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the conception, upon which this disclosure is based, may readily be utilized as a basis for the designing of other structures, methods and systems for carrying out the several purposes of the present invention. It is important, therefore, that the claims be regarded as including such equivalent constructions insofar as they do not depart from the spirit and scope of the present invention.
Further, the purpose of the foregoing abstract is to enable the Patent Office and the public generally, and especially the scientists, engineers and practitioners in the art who are not familiar with patent or legal terms or phraseology, to determine quickly from a cursory inspection the nature and essence of the technical disclosure of the application. The abstract is neither intended to define the invention of the application, which is measured by the claims, nor is it intended to be limiting as to the scope of the invention in any way.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a new and improved boat powering system which has all the advantages of the prior art boat powering system and none of the disadvantages.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a new boat powering system which may be easily and efficiently manufactured and marketed.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a new and improved boat powering system which is of durable and reliable construction.
An even further object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved boat powering system which is susceptible of a low cost of manufacture with regard to both materials and labour, and which accordingly is then susceptible of low prices of sale to the consuming public, thereby making such a product available to the buying public.
Still yet another object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved boat powering system which provides in the apparatuses and methods of the prior art some of the advantages thereof, while simultaneously overcoming some of the disadvantages normally associated therewith.
These together with other objects of the invention, along with the various features of novelty which characterize the invention, are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this disclosure. For a better understanding of the invention, its operating advantages and the specific objects attained by its uses, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings and detailed descriptive matter in which there is illustrated preferred embodiments of the invention.
Brief description of figures
Figure 1 shows a sectional view of the boat powering system inside the sail column.
Figure 2 shows a dimensional cutaway view of the water turbine and generator.
Detailed description of figures
A typical embodiment of the water turbine boat powering system is shown in Figure 1. It comprises the device 1, which is a sail column 6 which is vertically appointed transversely of the boat deck, in the known way. To the sail column sides are water pipes 4 and 5 which are supplied via the water 20 on which the boat is sailing. To the interior of the sail column to an upper location is a tank area 17 which empties water 20 downward as it is re-filed via outlet points 2 and 3 of said water pipes 4 and 5. The right hand water pipe 5 is vertically opposed to the sail column and has a hand pump 12 which is used to initially pump the first water 20 into the tank area 17 to fill it and empty initial water 20 onto two water turbines 11 and 16 located and affixed centrally to the sail column interior. The device 1 is supplied with water via pipe supply 18 from the sea or lake.
The water turbines 11 and 16 each have generators 7 and 10 attached to them and affixed inside the sail column wall 19 as shown, a second column wall side 8 is located to the opposing side of the sail column interior. The said water turbines rotate as the water 20 impacts down on them, turning the shaft into the generator. Electricity produced during this action is fed via wire 9 from the generator 7 to water pump 13 and via wire 15 from generator 10 to other areas of the boat where required, to include; a motor for propelling the boat, lighting and further power services.
Water from the device 1 is taken from the sea or lake via supply pipes and passes over said water turbines to rotate them and produce electricity, following which said water passes down inside the device and out through the bottom of the sail column interior and back out into the sea or lake from which the water originally was drawn via outlet point 14.
Figure 2 shows a water turbine 11A showing the water flow 20A falling downward using gravity to impact with the turbine blades 21 which are set in a circular arrangement onto the blade fitting 25 located within the turbine cylindric body 24 thereto.
The rotation of said turbine blades 21 turns the centrally located shaft 23 which is inserted to the generator rotor 22 with the stator 26 converting the rotating magnetic field to electric current. The stator 26 produces a magnetic field in the air gap of the generator 7.4. When the supply is fed in the stator coils, a magnetic fieid is produced and it travels through the air gap arid gets linked to the rotor conductor, inducing voltage in the rotating part of the generator 7A. The electricity generated is passed along aforementioned wire 9A.
Continual supply of water through the device ensures the power supply is ongoing and the supply of water which is unlimited due to the fact that it is being taken from the sea or lake ensures the turbines continue to rotate and produce power in an ongoing motion.
Claims (5)
- Claims 1) A water turbine boat powering system comprising; a sail column haying a water tank area, an inner wail, water turbines with generators, electrical power wires, a water exit point and water pump, wherein said water tank area has water pipes with outlet points located above internally appointed water turbines which are linked to generators within a wall; said wires send power to a water pump and to areas on a boat with excess water exited to the original source outside said boat.
- 2) A water turbine boat powering system according to claim 1 wherein said sail column is hollow to house aforementioned features.
- 3) A water turbine boat powering system according to claim 1 wherein said water tank area is fed water from water pipes located externally to the sail column.
- 4) A water turbine boat powering system according to claim 3 wherein said water is pumped upward to said water tank area by a water pump.
- 5) A water turbine boat powering system according to claim 4 wherein water from a water tank falls downward onto internal water turbines and rotates them 6) A water turbine boat powering system according to claim 1 wherein rotating water turbines are linked to a generator and produce electricity during rotation.7) A water turbine boat powering system according to claim 6 wherein electricity generated by said generators is sent to said water pump to power it and to other areas of a boat for use.8) A water turbine boat powering system according to claim 1 wherein excess water within the sail column is exited through an exit point back to the original source of the water.9) A water turbine boat powering system according to claim 1 wherein said sourced water is continually pumped into the sail column interior to provide power as aforementioned.10) A water turbine boat powering system according to any preceding claim; including a system to power a boat using water turbines with generators.
