Abstract

The invention is a petroleum well wear bushing install and retrieve system comprising - a wear bushing (1), - for being arranged in a wellhead (4), and - being of large bore for a drill pipe string (O, OL, OU) carrying a drill bit or other well tool below to pass through it, and - said wear bushing (1) provided with two or more internal, upward-closingJ-slots (10) with upward bottoms (11), - a running tool (2), - said running tool arranged for being run as part of said drill pipe string (0, 0U, 0L) at least extending above said running tool (2) and having a through-bore tool mandrel (20), - said running tool having radially extending ribs (22) with an outer diameter allowing to pass said J-slots, characterized in that said ribs (22) having radially extending spring-loaded dogs (21) arranged for controlled engagement with said internal J-slots (10), - each said radial dogs (21) having an upward directed key profile (210) for engaging with a corresponding lock profile (110) in said upward bottom (11), - shear pins (3) arranged for initially, for running in said wear bushing (1) to said wellhead (4), said shear pins (3) connecting said radial ribs (21) to said wear bushing (1); so as for allowing running in said wear bushing (1) on said running tool (2) and inserting it in said wellhead (4), and for then putting weight on said drill pipe string (0U) to shear out said shear pins (3) and pass said running tool (2) further downwardly for further operations below said wear bushing (1) or retrieving said running tool (2) upwardly.

Claims (10)

Claims
1. A petroleum well wear bushing install and retrieve system comprising - a wear bushing (1), - for being arranged in a wellhead (4), and - being of large bore for a drill pipe string (0, 0L, 0U) carrying a drill bit or other well tool below to pass through it, and - said wear bushing (1) provided with two or more internal, upward-closingJ-slots (10) with upward bottoms (11), - a running tool (2), - said running tool arranged for being run as part of said drill pipe string (0, 0U, 0L) at least extending above said running tool (2) and having a through-bore tool mandrel (20), - said running tool having radially extending ribs (22) with an outer diameter allowing to pass said J-slots, characterized in that said ribs (22) having radially extending spring-loaded dogs (21) arranged for controlled engagement with said internal J-slots (10), - each said radial dogs (21) having an upward directed key profile (210) for engaging with a corresponding lock profile (110) in said upward bottom (11), - shear pins (3) arranged for initially, for running in said wear bushing (1) to said wellhead (4), said shear pins (3) connecting said radial ribs (21) to said wear bushing ( 1); so as for allowing running in said wear bushing (1) on said running tool (2) and inserting it in said wellhead (4), and for then putting weight on said drill pipe string (0U) to shear out said shear pins (3) and pass said running tool (2) further downwardly for further operations below said wear bushing (1) or retrieving said running tool (2) upwardly.
2. The wear bushing install and retrieve system of claim 1, - said shear pins (3) connecting said radial ribs (21) to said wear bushing (1) via said radial dogs (21).

The wear bushing install and retrieve system of claim 2, - said shear pins (3), for running in said wear bushing (1), fixing said radial dogs (21) to said wear bushing (1), in the bottom (11) of said J-slots (10). The wear bushing install and retrieve system of any of the preceding claims, - said radial dogs' (21) upward directed key profile (210) having an abutment shoulder (212) , arranged for abutting and engaging with - a downward facing bottom abutment seat (112) of the lock profile (110) in the J-slot upward pocket bottom (11).

The wear bushing install and retrieve system of claim 3, - wherein an upwardly directed chamfer step ramp (211) on said dog (21) forms an upwardly protruding part of said upward facing abutment shoulder (212), together forming the the key profile (210) of the spring loaded dog (21), - said chamfer step ramp (211) arranged for fitting into an axially directed recess (111) in said abutment seat (112) of said lock profile (110) in said J-slot (10), said dog arranged for being rejected by any other downward facing protrusion from a wall of the well.

The wear bushing install and retrieve system of any of the preceding claims, each said dog (21) spring-loadedly arranged in a corresponding radial slot (224) in the rib (22), - each said dog (21) provided with a set of transverse, radially oval pin tunnels (225) provided with transverse pins (215) for limiting the radially outwardly and inwardly movement of said dog (21).
6. The wear bushing install and retrieve system of any of the preceding claims, each J-slot (10) comprising a J-shaped, radially shallow J-slot frame (101), inwardly protruding in said wear bushing (1).

The wear bushing of claim 6, each said J-slot frame (101) having - a straight J-stem portion (102) with - a lateral dog catch surface (103) arranged for first laterally catching said spring-loaded dog (21) while said running tool (2) is being rotated RHand running upwardly, and - an opposite, lateral guide-out lateral surface (104) for guiding out said spring-loaded dog (21) past said J-slot (10) if not rotated RH.

A method of installing a petroleum well wear bushing, the method comprising - in a well with a wellhead (4), assembling and running into a well with a wellhead (4), a lower drill pipe string (0, 0L) with a drill bit (D), a well tool (T), or a completion (C) for being run in the well below said wellhead (4); characterized by - providing a wear bushing (1) and a running tool (2) system of claim 1 - temporarily fixing said wear bushing (1) on said running tool (2) using said shear pins (3); - mounting said running tool (1) carrying said wear bushing (1) on said lower drill pipe string (0L), - assembling and running in an upper drill pipe string (0, 0U) on top of said running tool (2) thus running in said running tool (2) with said wear bushing (1) to said wellhead (4), - landing said wear bushing (1) in said wellhead (4); - loading weight on said running tool (2) via said drill pipe string (0, 0U, 0L) until said shear pins (3) shear out to release the running tool's (2) radial dogs (21); - running said running tool's (2) radial dogs (21) downwardly out of engagement with said J- slots (10), so as for disconnecting said running tool (2) downwardly from said wear bushing ( , - running said drill pipe string (0, 0U, 0L) with said running tool (2) further down through said wear bushing (1) in said wellhead (4), and - operating said drill bit (D), said well tool (T), or installing said completion (C) in the well below said wellhead (4).

A method of retrieving a wear bushing (1) from a wellhead (4), the wear bushing according to claim 1, the method comprising - providing a running tool (2) of claim 1, - arranging said running tool (2) as part of a drill pipe string (0, 0U, 0L); - running said running tool (1) into said well and through the wear bushing (1) thereby placing said running tool's (1) dogs (21) below said J-slots (10); - right-hand (RH) rotating said drill pipe string (0) while pulling up so as for said dogs (21) to engage with said J-slots (10) in said wear bushing (1); - pulling up on said drill pipe string so as for releasing and retrieving said wear bushing (1) from said wellhead (4).

A running tool dog (21) and J-slot (10) combination wherein the J-slot is downward open, characterized in that - said dog (21) has an upward directed key profile (210) with an abutment shoulderportion (212) with a rejection ramp (211) arranged for riding off upwardly when encountering downward facing protrusions from the wall of a well, and - said J-slot (10) has a corresponding downward facing landing seat in the J-slot pocket bottom (11) with a lock profile (110) for receiving said upward directed abutment shoulder portion (212) and provided with a recess (111) adapted to receive said rejection ramp (211), so as for said lock profile (110) not to reject said key profile, - said lock profile (110) rejecting any ramp broader than said recess (111).
