Abstract
An exercise training apparatus comprising a belt-like structure 2 which, in use, wraps around the waist of a user. One face of the belt having means to attach a lumbar support member such that the lumbar support member 10 is supported between the belt and the waist of the user during use. Preferably, the lumbar support will be attached by hook and loop fasteners and will comprise a neoprene foam, held within an outer cover to which the hook and loop fasteners are attached.
Description
EXERCISE APPARATUS
Field of invention
The present invention relates exercise apparatus. More especially the invention relates to an exercise belt with an attachable and removable lumber support to support the core and lower back of the user during exercise.
Background to the invention
In the world of muscular skeletal medicine it is a long held belief that a strong core is not just important for sporting activities but is essential for everyday functional movements. For this reason, clinicians and trainers advise their patients and clients to train their core muscles to improve and maintain functional stability.
The problem experienced is that people do not engage the correct muscles when training their core. Generally, people focus on the rectus abdominis muscle (to achieve a "six pack") but are not good at activating the important spinal stabilising muscles.
The present invention provides a belt and lumber support that assists a person's core stability. The belt allows a person, in a very simple way, to focus on activating the transverse abdominis and paraspinal muscles which are vital if a person wants to truly train their core in an effective way.
By using the belt to activate the core muscles, the person can then progress to a range of exercises, such as for example, sit-ups, bicycle crunches, flutter kicks, and leg raises, while being able to maintain core contractions during the exercise regime.
Statement of invention
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided, exercise training apparatus comprising a belt-like structure which, in use, wraps around the waist of a user, one face of the belt having means to attach a lumber support member such that the lumber support member is supported between the belt and the waist of the user during use.
Preferably the belt and/or the lumber support are made from neoprene fabric.
Preferably the attachment means comprises VelcroTM straps or pads.
Preferably the lumber support comprises a flat base and a curved top surface.
Preferably the VelcroTM straps are carried on the base of the lumber support.
Preferably the lumber support comprises a neoprene foam held within an outer cover. Preferably the outer cover carries the VelcroTM straps, that part of which form the base of the lumber support.
Brief description of the drawings
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying figures in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of an exercise belt constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 is a plan view of a lumber support member constructed in accordance with the invention; Figure 3 is a side view of the lumber support member of figure 3; Figure 4 is an underside view of the lumber support member;

Figure 5 is a perspective view of the belt and lumber support member attached together; and Figure 6 shows an outer cover for the lumber support member.
Detailed description of preferred embodiment
An exercise belt 2 of one embodiment of the invention is shown in figure 1. The belt 2 is made from a neoprene fabric material which is flexible to accommodate movement of the user during exercise but sufficiently strong to provide continuing compression to the lower back area.
The belt comprises a wide middle section 4 which, in use, wraps around the lower waist of a user, and end sections 6A, 63 of reduced width which overlay each other when the belt 2 is worn. One end section includes a section of VelcroTM (not shown) or other fastening mechanism which overlays the other end section to fasten the ends together at a desired length and tightness around the user.
The middle section has a typical width of between 20cm and 25cm, preferably 22cm. Each end sections have a typical width of 12cm to 16cm, preferably around 14cm. The end edges of the send section are generally curved. The overall length of the belt 2 is between 100cm and 110cm, preferably around 105cm. The length of each end section is around 20cm.
The above dimensions are provided purely for illustration purposes as belt could be made in various sizes suitable for the intended recipient.
As can be seen in the figure, the belt 2 may have a trim 8 (of a different colour) around its periphery for aesthetic purposes and/or to prevent fraying of the edges.
The belt 2 can be used on its own as a support for the core of a user during exercise.
Figures 2 to 4 illustrate a lumber support member 10 suitable for use with the belt 2. The lumber support 10 consists of a shaped block of neoprene foam located within an outer cover 12.
The lumber support is generally semi-circular having a flattened base 14, flattened side faces 16 and a curved C-shaped top surface 18. The arched shape of the top surface 18 is shaped to compliment the curvature of the lower back of a user. The foam structure may be formed a single piece or may comprise a combination of separate sections placed together to form the desired shape.
As can be seen in figure 4, the base surface 14 of the lumber support 10 carries VelcroTM straps 20 that fasten to the belt 2 in a central region. The lumber support 10 is intended to be fastened the surface of the belt 2 that would be the inside face when the belt 2 is worn, such that the lumber support 10 is supported on the belt 2 between the belt 2 and the waist of the user. The fact that the fastening means is provided on the lumber support 10 and not on the belt 2 means that the location of the lumber support 10 on the belt 2 is easily adjustable to assume the most comforting position.
Whilst the figure shows two parallel spaced apart VelcroTM straps 20, the 25 fastening mechanism could equally take the form of one or more pads or a different type of fastening mechanism altogether.
Figure 5 shows the lumber support 10 fastened to the belt 2 The belt 2 when worn, provides a support aid to the core and lower back region of the user and provides compression to the lower back. The lumber support 10 provides a focus to the wearer to engage the core by flattening their back against the lumber support padding that supports and protects the sacram.
The cover 12 of the lumber support 10 is shown in figure 6. It can be seen that the VelcroTM straps 20 are carried on one surface of the cover 12 which part then forms the base 14 of the lumber support 10 attachable to the belt 2.
Locating the foam support within a cover 12 means that the foam support can be removed to allow the cover 12 to be washed.
In an alternative embodiment the lumber support 10 is made as a single piece. It may be made from an alternative, as yet identified, foam material that is 10 machine washable.
It will be understood, that the various embodiments described herein have been described by way of example only and that modifications may be made thereto without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined in the accompanying claims.
