Abstract

258,951. Watson, W. D. July 1, 1925. Field carriages.-To enable a field gun to be fired from the ground at high angles of elevation, the front part of the trail 6 is lowered to the ground to form a firing platform 11 between the wheels 7, and the gun is trunnioned in brackets 4 which are pivotally connected to the trail and can also be locked to the trail when desired. In the form shown in the high-angle position in Fig. 1 and in the travelling position in Fig. 4 the gun is trunnioned at 3 in the brackets 4 which bear at 10 on the wheel axle 8 and are hinged at 5 between the trail beams 6. The front part of the trail has arcuate slots 9 engaging over the wheel axle and a circular platform 11 trainable with respect to an anchored portion 12. Pin 18 passing through holes in the brackets 4 engage holes 17 in the cheeks of the trail to lock the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1. The gun is so balanced in relation to the trail that, on removing the pins 18 and depressing the muzzle, the platform is raised from the ground until the axle is at the bottom of the slots 9, when the pins 18 are passed through holes 16 in position for firing from the wheels at low angles of elevation. In the intermediate travelling position shown in Fig. 4, the pins 18 are passed through holes 16<1> and the weight of the. gun and trail is then taken by bearing springs 21. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the gun is trunnioned at 3 in the trail and is linked at 25 to the brackets 4 which are hinged at 5 to the trail and connected to the axle by springs 26. In the position shown, the springs act to balance the weight of the gun about the trunnions during elevation. The cradle has an extension 30 which can be strapped over the pins 5 when the platform is to be raised, the straps 29. 28 confining the axle 8 and the trunnions 3 being then released. This permits of movement to the position shown in Fig. 7 in which the axle is spring borne. The springs 26 may be replaced by semi-elliptic springs if desired.
