Description

Title: Battery charger
Description of Invention
This invention relates to a battery charging device, particularly but not exclusively for charging a battery of a cleaning device.
According to a first aspect of the invention we provide a battery charging device comprising: a stand for receiving a portion of a battery, a power connector for receiving power from a mains source, and one or more tool supports each configured to engage and support a tool for a cleaning device, the stand providing a charging connector configured to engage with a corresponding charging point on the battery so as to charge the battery when the battery charging device receives power via the power connector.
According to a second aspect of the invention we provide a combination of a battery charging device according to the first aspect, and a cleaning tool of the type providing a suction channel for connection to a suction cleaning device either directly by connection to the cleaning device itself or indirectly by connection to a wand or a hose attached to the cleaning device.
According to a third aspect of the invention we provide a combination of a battery charging device according to the first aspect, and a battery for powering a cleaning device.
Further features of the above aspects of the invention are described in the appended claims.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the following figures, of which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a charging device according to embodiments of the invention; Figure 2 is a front view of the charging device of Figure 1, Figure 3 is a top-down view of the charging device of Figures 1 and 2, Figure 4 is a side view of the charging device of Figures 1 to 3, in combination with a mains power connector, Figure 5 is a side view of a charging device and battery, according to embodiments of the invention, Figure 6 illustrates a charging device with a battery docked on the device, and two cleaning tools of the type providing a suction channel for connection to a suction cleaning device either directly by connection to the cleaning device itself or indirectly by connection to a wand or a hose attached to the cleaning device.
With reference to the Figures, we describe a battery charging device 10. In broad terms, the battery charging device 10 comprises: a stand 14 for receiving a portion of a battery 50, a power connector 40 for receiving power from a mains source (via a cable 42 for example), and one or more tool supports 16 each configured to engage and support a tool 60a, 60b for a cleaning device. The stand 14 provides a charging connector 20 configured to engage with a corresponding charging point on the battery 50 so as to charge the battery 50 when the battery charging device 10 receives power via the power connector 40.
The stand 14 provides a substantially flat base for standing on a floor or worktop. In embodiments and as shown, the stand 14 provides a plurality of feet 26 for engaging the surface on which the device 10 is stood. The feet 26 are provided with pads for increased frictional engagement with the surface on which the device is positioned, to oppose sliding movement across the surface.
In embodiments, the battery charging device 10 provides a battery level display 25. When the battery charging device 19 is in use, with a battery docked on the stand 14, the battery level display 25 displays the level of charge in the docked battery. The battery level display 25 may comprise one or more LEDs (i.e. the number of lit LEDs, or the colour of the one or more lit LEDs, is representative of the level of charge). In other embodiments, the battery level display 25 provides a display screen on the stand 14 of the device, displaying a level of charge. The display may show a % charge value between 0 and 100 (or equivalent on any other numerical scale), for example, or it may show a chart or bar illustrating the level of charge between empty and full. In this way, a user may see a visual indication of the level of charge of a battery when it is docked on the stand 14.
In embodiments, each tool support 16 is configured to engage and support a tool 60a, 60b of the type providing a suction channel 64 for connection to a suction cleaning device either directly by connection to the cleaning device itself or indirectly by connection to a wand or a hose attached to the cleaning device. The tool support 16 provides a protruding support member 56 configured to extend within a portion of the suction channel 64 of the tool 60a, 60b, when the tool 60a, 60b is placed over the protruding support member 56. The connecting portion 62a, 62b of the tool 60a, 60b preferably fits snugly around the protruding support member 56 so that the tool support 16 engages the inner surface of the suction passage 64 of the cleaning tool 60a, 60b.
As shown in the Figures, the protruding support member 56 engages the inner surface of the suction passage 64 at a plurality of positions spaced about its 30 circumference; for example, it may define an X-shaped cross-section as shown in the embodiment illustrated in the Figures, such that the tips of the X-formation are configured to lie inside and against the inner surface of the suction passage 64. The end portion 58 of the or each tool support member 16 may be chamfered or rounded, which allows the connecting portion 62a, 62b of the tool 60a, 60b to slide over the end of the support member 16 at a slight angle, offset from the central axis of the support member 16. This aids ease of fitting a tool 60a, 60b in place on the stand 14.
In the embodiment illustrated, the stand 14 provides a base unit 12 from which a battery dock 18 extends upwardly, providing a wall at least partially surrounding a battery 50 when it is docked on the stand 14. The battery 50 is received in a recess 22 formed by the battery dock 18, so that when the battery 50 is fully inserted into the recess 22, a charging contact 20 on the stand 14 is brought into contact with a corresponding charging connector 52 on the battery 50. In this way, the stand 14 provides power to the battery 50 when it is docked on the stand 14. The base unit 12 may further provide a support surface 30 for supporting an underside of a portion of the battery 50 when it is in its docked position.
The tool supports 16 are disposed on side portions 28 of the base unit 12, so that tool 60a, 60b, when positioned on the device 10, is offset from the stand 14 and supported battery 50. As shown in the Figures, tool supports 16 may be provided on either side of the base unit 12, providing two tool supports 16. In other embodiments, further tool supports 16 may be provided.
In embodiments, the battery dock 18 provides a back wall 24 and a pair of edge guides 32, so that a back surface 54 of the battery 50 slides against the back wall 24 as the battery 50 is inserted into the recess 22 of the battery dock 18, and the edge guides 32 engage with a portion 53 of each side of the battery 50 as it is inserted to its docked position. The edge guides 32 may provide a securing formation such as a latch, which interacts with the portion 53 of each side of the battery 50 to secure the battery 50 in its docked position (until the latch is retracted by way of a push-button release mechanism for example, or under a force of a user pulling the battery out of the docked position).
When used in this specification and claims, the terms "comprises" and "comprising" and variations thereof mean that the specified features, steps or integers are included. The terms are not to be interpreted to exclude the presence of other features, steps or components.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the following claims, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, as appropriate, may, separately, or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
Although certain example embodiments of the invention have been described, the scope of the appended claims is not intended to be limited solely to these embodiments. The claims are to be construed literally, purposively, and/or to 20 encompass equivalents.
