Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to lawn mowers (e.g., walk power mowers), having a deck supported for travel over a ground surface. The deck may support a prime mover having an output shaft adapted to power a cutting blade contained within a cutting chamber defined by the deck. The mower may also include a drive system to power the cutting blade. In some embodiments, the cutting blade may attach to the output shaft of the prime mover via a friction interface such that, upon unintended blade contact with obstacles, the blade may rotationally slip relative to the output shaft. Moreover, the mower may include a blade brake clutch (BBC) adapted to permit selective activation and deactivation of the blade independent of the prime mover.

Claims (15)

1. A lawn mower comprising: a deck comprising an upper surface; a prime mover attached to the upper surface and comprising an output shaft extending downwardly through the upper surface; a blade brake clutch (BBC) operatively attached to the output shaft; a cutting blade; and a friction interface between the cutting blade and the BBC, wherein the BBC is selectively actuatable between an engaged position, wherein the BBC couples the cutting blade to the output shaft, and a disengaged position, wherein the BBC decouples the cutting blade from the output shaft, and wherein the friction interface permits rotational slip of the cutting blade relative to the BBC upon application of a threshold torque applied to the cutting blade.
2. The mower according to claim 1, wherein the deck further comprises ground contact members adapted to support the deck in rolling engagement with a ground surface.
3. The mower according to claim 2, wherein at least one of the ground contact members comprises a driven member.
4. The mower according to claim 3, wherein the driven member comprises a roller driven by the prime mover.
5. The mower according to any one of claims 1-4, further comprising a transmission pulley attached to the output shaft.
6. The mower according to claim 5, wherein the transmission pulley comprises a variable ratio pulley.
7. The mower according to any one of claims 1-4, wherein the friction interface comprises a friction disk.
8. The mower according to claim 7, wherein the BBC comprises protrusions adapted to engage openings in the friction disk.
9. The mower according to claim 7, wherein the cutting blade is adapted to rotationally slip relative to the friction disk.
10. The mower according to any one of claims 1-4, wherein the prime mover comprises an internal combustion engine.
11. A lawn mower comprising: a deck comprising an upper surface partially defining a cutting chamber; a prime mover attached to the upper surface of the deck and comprising an output shaft extending downwardly into the cutting chamber; a transmission pulley attached to the output shaft; a cutting blade; a blade brake clutch (BBC) operatively attached to the output shaft below the transmission pulley, the BBC selectively actuatable between an engaged position, wherein the BBC couples the cutting blade to the output shaft, and a disengaged position, wherein the BBC decouples the cutting blade from the output shaft; and a friction disk positioned between the cutting blade and the BBC, the friction disk permitting rotational slip of the cutting blade, relative to the BBC, upon application of a threshold torque to the cutting blade.
12. The mower according to claim 11, wherein the BBC comprises downwardly extending protrusions mechanically received within openings formed in the friction disk.
13. The mower according to claim 12, further comprising a fastener that extends through the cutting blade and the friction disk and threadably engages the BBC.
14. The mower according to any one of claims 11-13, wherein the transmission pulley comprises a variable ratio pulley.
15. The mower according to any one of claims 1 1-13, wherein the prime mover comprises an internal combustion engine.
