Floors, cleaning.-Floors, &c. are polished by a machine consisting of a casing 1, which is mounted on a wheeled bogey, supporting an electric motor 11, four spindles 15 carrying tools 25, and a fan 41 and dust casing 42. The spindles 15 are driven from the motor through gearing 9, 8, 13, 14, the gear wheels 14 fitting square sectioned parts of the spindles, whereby these may be raised or lowered by screwed rods 19 engaging screwed bushes 20 secured to the casing; the wheels 14 are prevented from axial motion by brackets 23. Each spindle at its lower end is of square section and fits in a corresponding portion 24 of the tool 25, movement of the tool being limited by a screw 27 engaging a slot 26 in the spindle, and the tool is pressed down by a spring 28. The operative face of the tool comprises two layers 29, 30 of leather secured by bolts 32 to the tool 25 and a third layer of leather 31 stitched to the other layers, curved grooves 34 being formed in the layer 31, and polishing brushes being secured to the layer 31. In the layers is formed a central aperture 35 communicating with the passage in the tool 25, which in turn communciates with an axial passage 36 in the spindle 15. The passage 36 communciates with a passage 37, having branches 38, in the rod 19, and the upper portion of the rod is surrounded by a casing 39, from which a tube 40 leads to the fan; dust is thus removed as generated. In order to lift the tools 25 simultaneously, a member 44 is provided engaging collars 46 on the tools, and the member 44 is engaged by a foot-operated lever 47 ball jointed to a bar 49 carried by the casing; when the foot member 50 of the lever is depressed, the lever is moved sideways, a projection thereon engaging a quadrant 52 to lock the tools in the raised position.
